Game On! NUFC v MUFC

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
Good day everyone. I hope you’re all locked in and ready for the game tonight.

Manchester United never seem to give us an easy rude and I’m sure that will be the case again this evening.

However the need for Newcastle to pull off an unlikely result is massive and doing it in a game where we’re essentially expected to get nothing would be a very welcome bonus. But then we’ll have to see what happens.

At the time of writing the match preview (which you can see here) we hadn’t signed Henri Saivet and the deal was still at the medical stage. Subsequently he signed and it appears that we’re also close to completing the signing of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea.

A welcome boost but neither will be able to assist us this evening anyway so instead we turn to the ‘older’ heads.

For the team news check out the bottom of this article. I’ll try and publish it one hour prior to kick-off but I have a poorly boy at home to sort out so may be delayed.

In terms of broadcasting we are live on BT Sport which is generally good news if you’re looking for a stream. You can normally find a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

  1. Great ball by that big failure Johnson as per TDS!

On another note, Townsend transfer is nowhere near as the clubs only started talking yesterday and Spurs ain’t easy…

  2. We’ll do well to get a draw today, and the gap to safety will get bigger and bigger.
Could the introduction of the two new lads cause confusion in the group, just as we seem to be putting some performances together ? They are going to need to integrate pretty damned quick because we are all running out of games, and need the points.
Still no sign of a striker, obviously barking up the wrong tree again regarding Austin, similar to Lacazette, a player who has never been interested in coming to the toon, despite the blather in the media.

Mitrovic similar to Boney. Now that really did have me spitting out my cornflakes 😯

  3. MM, I said during the last window that Austin would end up at Saints or Bournemouth because of links down there. I don’t believe he has EVER entertained a move up north. Shearer said we approached him last summer but he turned us down as thought he could do better.

  4. We are desperate for 3 points and with Scum now losing 2.1 it’s a golden opportunity to get out the bottom 3. It’s gonna be hard but at least we don’t face big Andy.

  7. Icedog@690, we really need 3 points today to get the momentum started, I reckon we’ll end up with a point though, and every point counts. We need to start pegging the Bournemouths, Norwich and Swanseas back…

  9. I think this will be just as difficult, if not more so than the Man U game. But we still need three points really. We can’t afford to let the gap widen to the rest. If we only played the top half teams, we would be okay. West Ham are top half so can we get a result today. I hope Shelvey is fired up but doesn’t do anything stupid.

  10. Gets on my wick when dumb pundits talk about goal difference being like an extra point! If the team that is behind catches up quite a few points on another team, then it’s going to catch up a lot on the goal difference too!

Goal difference only really becomes interesting when teams are very close to each other with points.

  11. Ice@694, Kirkhof was a bit player at FC Bayern, and couldn’t force his way into the team. I reckon he’ll be a good aquisition for the makkems, but he aint a centre half, more a defensive mid.

He had a canny start today though, and long may it continue ! 😈

  12. When you think of where Wet Spam were 3-4 years ago, it’s shocking really. There was a question about whether they could be premier league for the new stadium at one stage. Let’s hope we are up there with them in another few years. ❗

  13. I was going to say earlier that I fancy us today after the Man Utd performance and the Shelvey signing. Doesn’t seem as impressive a prediction now…

  14. Shelvey has always been a big talent. He seems into the Toon too, all talk of reading fan sites and the YouTube channel.

Hope he makes a home here like Barton. Without the prison.

  15. Stu @ 706 thats what really winds me up, ie we are capable of playing when we want. It just seems that most of the times we looked as if we couldn’t be bothered

Shelvey showing flashes of Yohan Cabaye in his glory days. Possibly even better with his direct switch passing. Great to watch. #NUFC

    Kinda agree. 😈

  17. We are shocked because we have had so many ‘sideways’ short passers in midfield. Anita, Tiote & Colback the current incumbents. Shelvey is the first since Barton who even attempts a direct forward pass from central mid. That long diagonal to Janmatt was a peach though. Better than anything Barton could do! The sort of ball that got him a move to Liverpool. AND we haven’t even seen his shooting yet. It is amazing what a signing like that does to the other players!
