NUFC could be handed big boost ahead of Sunday’s title showdown

Newcastle United’s official website released some promising pictures today, showing top scorer Dwight Gayle back in first team training, as the squad prepares for Sunday’s final game of the season against Barnsley.

The striker has missed the last 4 fixtures after suffering a reoccurrence of a hamstring injury in April’s defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Newcastle have managed without him, confirming promotion in last Monday’s 4-1 win over Preston, however Daryl Murphy and Aleksandar Mitrovic have scored just 1 goal between them in his absence over the past month.

With a victory needed on Sunday to keep our hopes of lifting the title alive, Gayle’s return may come as a timely boost.

The United number 9 may have looked out of sorts recently, with his niggling hamstring injury a concern, but he will be itching to return to action to potentially fire Newcastle to the title this weekend.

Should Gayle miss out, I have faith in Mitrovic or Murphy to get the job done, however it would be nice to see Gayle feature and finish his outstanding season in style.
