Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for Porto striker Vincent Aboubakar this week, and today we gained some interesting insights about the potential transfer when speaking to Chief writer at the Northern Echo Paul Fraser.
Despite The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder playing down such rumours of a move for the Cameroon striker, several outlets in the national press and reports in Turkey have suggested Aboubakar’s £9m move to Tyneside is ‘close’.
Since then, The Northern Echo have also revealed that Aboubakar IS in fact a target, revealing is being lined up as an alternative option to Tammy Abraham – who opted to join Swansea on loan earlier this week.
Today we’ve got in touch with the Northern Echo, hoping they could clear up the conflicting rumours.
As you can see below, Paul (the Northern Echo’s head writer) confirmed Newcastle’s interest, however mentions that Aboubakar was a Carr recommendation:
It will be interesting to see what happens on that front now, I was always under impression he was a Carr recommendation. Still a talent tho

With last night’s announcement of Graham Carr’s departure in mind, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle and Rafa Benitez now continue to pursue a deal for Aboubakar.
The 25-year-old scored 20 goals during a loan spell at Besiktas last season and appears to be a player whose pace and power would lend itself to the Premier League, but whether Benitez will now pursue a player heavily tracked by NUFC’s ex-scout in another matter..
