Alan Pardew explains why Newcastle ‘got lucky’ at Southampton yesterday

Speaking as a pundit for Sky Sports during yesterday’s 2-2 draw at Southampton, former NUFC boss Alan Pardew has stated that we were lucky to have kept DeAndre Yedlin on the pitch, admitting that he still ‘can’t understand’ how he wasn’t shown a second yellow.

Yedlin was booked for descent in the first half and rather clumsily clattered into Southampton winger Nathan Redmond just 10 minutes into the second:

It was a late challenge and was a second bookable offence in all fairness.

We may have felt hard done by to come away with just a point in a game we took the lead in twice, but it’s fair to say we did get away with one here

As you’d expect, Sky commentators made the most of it and former boss Alan Pardew said the following on the incident in the studio after the game:

“I can’t understand how DeAndre Yedlin stays on the pitch.

“Even at the time…the reaction of the fans, they knew he had already been booked.”

I must say that I was fully expecting him to be given his marching orders after the foul. It wasn’t an awful challenge, but it was typically full blooded from the American and one that Kevin Friend fortunately let go.

We’ve been let down by some frustrating refereeing decisions so far this season, so at least this one has gone in our favour to help even things up a little!

Do you believe the referee was right not to hand him a second yellow or do you agree with Alan here?

  1. Am l literally the only person to see that he made contact with the ball in the tackle?

If he hadn’t then it would have been a 2nd yellow easily.
