According to Sky Sports News, Rafa Benitez is NOT seen as a ‘strong candidate’ to become the new Arsenal manager – coming as reassuring news for us NUFC fans after seeing the Spaniard be tipped to replace Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.
As just about every football fan will now know, Wenger confirmed that he will be stepping down as Arsenal manager at the end of the season after 22 years with the Gunners.
As expected, there’s been several names put forward since the big announcement – and Rafa Benitez’s name has been thrown around by several in the media.
Fortunately, it doesn’t sound like he’s someone they’re seriously considering ‘at this early stage’, with Sky Sports confirming that Mikel Arteta, Luis Enrique, Julian Nagelsmann and Domenico Tedesco are all preferred options at this stage.
Obviously this doesn’t change the fact that Mike Ashley has work to do to convince Rafa to commit to the club this summer, but it is a relief to hear Arsenal probably won’t be pursuing him – being a club many would find hard to turn down.
This all assuming Rafa wants to go to London, and if so the Chuckle Brothers at West Ham would be falling over each other to offer a contract.
