Is Jose close to staying?

Jose may not be on his way!
Jose Enrique has been speaking to the local press today, which is a rare occurrence these days after the Spaniard was kept away from the media spotlight due to the situation regarding his contract.

As yet, talks are still yet to get underway but it was thought that Enrique wanted to see signs of ambition and improvement in the playing staff over the summer before he committed to a new deal. Don’t we all!

This lead to widespread speculation regarding the future of the player who, if you listen to Phil Thompson or the gutter press, is on his way to Liverpool in the summer.

However his comments today seem to suggest that he could yet stay at Newcastle. Whilst remaining coy on any talk of a new deal Enrique was keen to paint a bright picture of the current squad and recognises that things could have been much better had we not had to contend with a lengthly injury list for a large part of the season.

“We’ll see what happens next year and which players come to us,” Enrique told The Chronicle. “We have a great squad here though, and we have been very unlucky with injuries. Next season we will hopefully get new players and try to build on a top-10 finish.”

The Spaniard continued: “To finish in the top 10 is important this season and it would be very nice for us to finish ahead of Sunderland.”

“I remember they were happy to see us go down, but now we are in Premier League and we have been better than them so far – it’s important we keep going.”

It certainly seems from his words that Jose is thinking of staying for next season at least as there is a lot of talk “we” and “next season” involved. It is of course his right to stay as he still has one year remaining on his current deal, but the ultimate aim should be to ensure that we can sign up him up for longer.

I’m still not convinced either way to be honest. My gut feeling is that Jose will be away in the summer, but there is at least still some hope of keeping him at the club. Only time will tell I guess.

If he goes, he goes. A left-back is not vitally important to a team although it does of course help things if you have a good one like Jose. If he stays it will be a massive boost to club and to the fans who adore and chant his name on a regular basis and will show that the club mean what they said when they claimed they wanted to keep hold of their better players. Where they failed with Andy Carroll perhaps they’ll succeed with Jose?

Once again, we’ll have to wait and see.

  1. My source in Spain says that he will stay……..unfortunately, I’m my source in Spain and have been known to be wildly inaccurate with my predictions 😉 😆

I hope he stays, but either way I just hope it’s sorted quickly!

  2. His comments suggest to me that he’s prepared to run his contract down or at least have that option…

I dont think that’s an option MA & DL will let happen?!? Discuss…

  3. We believe that the Newcastle Club will sell Jose. 👿
We also believe that the Newcastle Club have agreed personal terms with Seb Larsson. 😉

  4. Hope he stays, depends on who comes in though. Liverpool WILL be making an offer. Whether it’s accepted or not will be another story.

Not great they are knocking on Europes door either 😥

  5. It would be really great if we can keep Jose. If we lose him it could really hurt jonas’ game

  6. “Not great they are knocking on Europes door either”…..they do that to check if anyones in, then climb through the window 😉

  7. Good point Moreno. Liverpool have a slight chance of making the champions league. With the money that John Henry is willing to splash for them, they could possibly offer enough for the club and Jose to accept it

  8. Andrew, Liverpool won’t make the Champions League now, they might make the Europa League though.

From what a can gather Spurs and Liverpool don’t actually want to qualify for the Europa and see it has a hindrance so it will be interesting when Liverpool play Spurs 😀

  9. All true dan. I was just saying that there was a mathematical possibility of it.

  10. It is a hindrance to league performance no doubt-but thats only if you intend to play to win it. I imagine both teams would still like to qualify-if Spurs drop out of Europe then they’ll have trouble bringing in new/better faces into the team, and some players might fancy a team actually playing in Europe. Liverpool similarly might not be fussed about winning and might go for an early exit-but the fact that a team is actually “in” europe is still a handy draw and I’ve no doubt dalglish would want that in order to grab some more players…Like Jose for example.

  11. It’s strange how no one seems to be questioning the interpretation this time.
If there were indications that he was looking to leave there would be numerous people saying his English is poor and Spanish doesn’t translate very well into English. 😆

I just hope he does sign up and I will start and feel reassured we are heading in the right direction. 😉

  12. bobby….some things translate easier than others, believe me I know more than most. I’m not talking about this article but past ones I have asked wor lass if it’s translated literally could it be taken the wrong way, alot can but past quotes like “I love it here, I love the city, fans” etc, can’t be misinterpreted……personally, I think he’s doing the usual footballers trick of covering all his options with sweeping statements 😉

  17. I think Jose’s just playing games, still think he will leave because he wants to leave. He said he would only talk when we are safe so now is the time to sort it all out, sooner the better so we can try and sign a replacment if he leaves.

  18. TGS, I’ve changed it, don’t know if it’s anymore flattering.

I’ll leave that for you to decide 😉

  23. How about a blog mocking Fernando Torres?

No reason why, I just find it comical he has been **** for 2 years now and people still say it is form.

  24. Yes yes yes to a fantasy premier league. Next year I will finally get rid of my toon bias of trying not to have players playing against us in. Also I’ve had Shola in my team for way too long even if he did score at the weekend!

Because it would probably have the same results as a referendum on eliminating the beer tax. 😉

  27. We think a Larsson article is a bad idea as we believe that Toonsy wouldn’t be able to resist mocking the grandaddy of NUFC blogging or speaking about himself in the third person whilst telling everyone what to think 😉

  28. With a sensational headline which goes something like this…….

“Seb Larrsson Signs 5 Year Deal At The Famous Newcastle Club”

…….and then go on about how it’s a possibility Pardew saw him play on Saturday and we may consider him in the Summer
