Demba Ba deal in doubt.

A risky signing.
It looks as though the near-certain deal to bring Demba Ba to Newcastle may not be so near-certain after all.

Speaking to the BBC, Alan Pardew has revealed that the deal has hit a snag thanks to the well-known medical issues that the player has and that a deal is still some way off being concluded thanks to some “big hurdles” that need to be overcome before the Senegalese international can sign on the dotted line.

“There is an issue about his medical, and there has been in the past,” Pardew told BBC Newcastle. “We’ve got to overcome those things, but hopefully he can join the club. I think he’ll be a big success.”

Pardew added: “He’s a player that has a natural eye for a goal, my connections at West Ham are very good and I know everything about him.”

“I’m pretty relaxed that he can be a success at Newcastle if we can get him but it’s a big if at the moment because there are some big hurdles to get across.”

What isn’t quoted is the fact that apparently Ba’s condition is, ahem “manageable”, although quite how manageable a degenerative bone disease can be is something that is what beyond my knowledge base. Is there a doctor in the house?

Clearly there are concerns over the medical condition of the player which will of course raise further questions about the wisdom of the move. What I will say though is that despite his apparent fragility he is yet to suffer a real serious injury. I guess this is what the medical is there to look at, so they can reasonably judge the risk of something happening.

So to me the moves look it may not go ahead after all, despite Pardew’s positivity about the situation. I mean lets face it, he hardly has a good track record of getting his own way now does he? And if the deal looks like it will backfire on the club you can be certain that plug will be pulled along with the rug that is underneath the manager.

I do hope something can be sorted though. A look at Demba Ba’s goalscoring record will show you that he can finish and knows where the back of the net is. We need a goalscorer. It’s a match made in heaven.

Unfortunately it’s turning out to be a transfer from hell.

  1. Mark Douglas says he has not failed his medical. Hopefully they can get him over the line so that he can sign.

  2. Saw that Ahmed- I think the posts from the previous thread are right in that we are probably looking for a little protection in the contract.

  3. Everyone knows he has a knee problem, im sure we were well aware he has issues before we got him in for talks yesterday.

Be a shame if we dont get him because he’ll probably join another PL team.

  4. I believe the medical definition of “manageable” means that “we can play him with full confidence for at least two games per season in which he will be 100% fit and playing him any more than that could cause his lower legs to fall off…” see Shola Ameobi for details

  5. Tis’ to be expected. Didn’t imagine Demba just walking into St James’ Park and announcing ‘I want £4M a year and £2M for my agent’, without Dekka saying ‘Yer right, lets have a look at your knee first.’

  6. maybe w/ham took a chance as they would not have got insurance without a good medical report on him,and toon want something in his contract to cover that, ashley will want his cash covered somehow imo, this one might not go through 🙁

  7. He failed his medical at West Ham but they were that desperate for goals they just took the risk.

  8. It’s all about the money and risk. Gosling’s problem is probably more serious but we signed him coz he’s cheaper.

  9. I imagine that the problem could be around the insurance for the player. Perhaps it will cost too much to insure the player when there is something on the medical.

Who knows. If we don’t get him, then I’m sure we’ll get someone else in. At the minute though, things are looking rather worrying.

Plenty of time to fix it though.

  10. Sounds like an awesome player 😉
Players like this are a fookin insult to NUFC.
Fat **** is sitting on £40 million from the sale of Carroll and Nolan alone and we are chasing players in wheelchairs…..wake up fellas!

7 goals in 12 games is decent for a lad in a wheelchair mind 😉

  14. Sounds like the knee is being used as leverage in contract negotiations.

The whole planet knows about Ba’s knee, it’s got to be one of Ashley’s either accept this or walk away deals. (hop away? 🙂 )

He might have the upper hand again here like because Everton will offer him a curley wurley and a sherbet dib dab. 🙂

  17. Surely they knew about his problems with his medical at Stoke, He was obviously going to fail and i thought they were bypassing that like they did with Ireland/Gosling/Benny.

Maybe there is a real problem, Because i can understand stoke pulling out when they had £7m-£8m on the table but this is next to no risk…

  20. hey lads,, ffs dont say anything negative or stepford wife Moreno will jump on you… this morning i said that Ba would be under the knife by mid season and got slated for it for being negative etc etc.. the usual…
Toonsy… pls dont put up any negative stuff or you will be labelled negative too…The Ba deal is obviosuly a dead duck…end of… NEXT!!!!!!! woooooo, we are flying in this window and its good to see our club has done its home work as AP only seems to be aware that Ba has shagged out knees today.. when we all knew it ages ago.
Seriously though…..saying as our owner is tighter than a ducks ar5e.. we can not afford to take chances on a limp **** player who will never see out a full season.. esp as he will be our main striker… if Ba breaks down (and he would) we are left with another Kuqi in january – cos ashley will not stump up the cash. He knows Ba is too risky so we should pass him by… but as he is free AShley will not and would rather do the gamble than pay the going rate for a good striker. You gets what ya pays for more times than not. We now have 40 million off player sales alone in the bank since janaury… plus the amount the should have been available this window(15 million min).. so to me that is easily well over 50 million of neat cash… why oh why are we scrimping around for the freebies and dregs?????

  21. Craig – I wouldn’t say its dead, but from pardews words it doesn’t look great does it?

Mind you, I agree with what some of the others have said about club posturing for a better deal or insurance. It may even be that he failed a medical and the club then gave/give him a skinny, no frills medical 😀

In short, until irs official either way I guess its just gossip, but at least there are some quotes and its not just twitter guff again 🙂

Liam – think I’ve scheduled your article for 5pm. Don’t hold me to that though. Its a rough estimate 😆

  23. Pardew didn’t say he’d failed a medical he just said there were ‘issues about his medical’ and ‘hurdle’s to cross’. Sounds to me like Dekka has pressed the button on the bat phone and if twitter is to be believed Ashley flew in an hour ago. It will all be about money, they will all be sitting round a table with a brandy and cigar on the burn in Dekka’s noise maker. 😛

  24. He’s well worth the gamble in my opinion. Especially if the rumour is true that Besty is gonna be let go. I think a lot of people undersell the intelligence of our board (comment 40). Would you really rather ignore direct quote’s from the management (“i have good connections with West Ham, and know all about the lad”) just to be negative? Get a grip!

  25. Perhaps MA is considering the resale value as Ba will likely fail his next medical too 😆

if we sign ba today thats 2 players in a week , 2 good players aswell!!

    ——————–
Very true. But we haven’t yet spent the whole 35M in the first 2 weeks of the window so it has been a major dissappointment 😉

      (Quote)

  28. This is just my opinion, but id prefer us to get the freebies in now. They are the ones that will be in demand, like Ba who will have other teams after him.

No player worth a fee is going to move this early in the window unless they want to move desperately as they will want to see what they can get.

Just my opinion, but just because we have a wedge it doesn’t mean we have to spend it today.

No doubt your next comment will completely contradict the one you just wrote, cos that’s your usual way of doing things.

Don’t cry just because I exposed the fact you talk utter garbage 80% of the time and the other 20% I don’t even bother reading as I have no doubt it’s total tripe.

By the way, how’s Routledge settling in after us selling him for 1.5 million to QPR to fund the Ba move? Or was it Nolan we sold for the Ba move? No wait, we sold Nolan for Cabaye…actually what the f*cks going on I think my head might explode.

  30. CC@34, …and who could forget ‘Super Nacho’ Gonzalez! Signing a crock is always gona be a risk. The shady Uruguayan spent a whole season getting paid to sit on his **** and get free medical treatment. Think that was a dodgy poison dwarf back-scratch deal mind.

  32. Good point @54, Toonsy. If we get Ba and another player or two in, clubs won’t be able to hold us to ransom, because we won’t be desperate. Ba may be a bit risky, but for a free, it seems like a no-brainer to me, as long as we have depth. The idea of letting Best go worries me a bit.

  37. You must have some real quacks as doctors up there, the guy hasn’t yet passed a medical since his knee problems were diagnosed. Not saying you shouldn’t sign him – he is pretty decent especially for “free” – but if you think he has “passed” a medical you’re in dreamland.
