What sort of reception will Carroll and Enrique get?

Judas Carroll? Or Judas Jose?
I’m not one for really bothering with former players if truth be told.

To me they are just commodities who come and go, almost at will. I don’t get why other people think differently either.

Anyway, I’ll stop digressing. As I said, I don’t usually look at former players at all, but this one seems to be all over the media so I’ll run with it and see what everyone else thinks about it.

The subject at hand is of course the weekend encounter with Liverpool and the first return to St James’ Park for the likes of Jose Enrique and Andy Carroll.

Much is being made of the reception these former favourites will get on their return to the club which effectively made them in England and gave Liverpool a reason to splash out a rather astonishing estimated £41 million on the pair. In fact Kenny Dalglish has already suggested that the pair may get a bit of stick upon their return.

Dalglish said in his pre-match press conference: “I’m not sure Andy will get abuse because what happened was outside his control. It’s up to them what they want to do. They pay their entrance money and, if they want to give him stick, they will give him stick. But I don’t think he ever did anything other than give of his best for Newcastle, and then they got £35m into the bargain as well. That’s not bad, is it?

“I think Andy will be excited about going back. It’s the club he supported as a boy, the club that introduced him and gave him his chance in professional football. So I think he will be excited about it as a local boy and will be looking forward to the game. José Enrique had a few years up there too, and he will be looking forward to it as well.”

I’m just wondering what kind of reception you guys have planned for our former number nine, and our former number three come to think of it.

Will it be a hostile one? Will it be a warm one? Will one player get a barracking while the other gets off lightly?

The cameras will be on Carroll and watching the reception he gets, but for me he isn’t the one that I’m most disappointed in. I’ve never bought this “forced out” baloney. Not in a million years can you force a player out of a club if they have a contract. If it could be done do you think we would STILL have Xisco and Alan Smith on our payroll?

Nope.

Carroll left his boyhood club for his own reasons. Whether that be money or or a better chance of Europe or a better shot at winning a trophy, who knows. He had his reasons and off he went, but most importantly he went quietly and we’ve not heard a peep out of him since. He hasn’t slagged off the club, the manager, the owners or anything like that.

Jose Enrique is a completely different kettle of fish however. The sneaky Spaniard played the game all along and knew he was off for months. It was evident in his performances for us, and the Blackpool away game sticks firmly in the mind when I look back on it.

He wanted to talk about a new deal in the summer so he told us. He wanted to wait until he knew we were safe before sitting down to discuss things, yet it seems he had no intention of doing so all along and he left for Liverpool after a rather public outburst on Twitter where he criticised the club, its policies, and its lack of ambition – a lack of ambition that sees his former club eight points clear of his current employers ahead of the game on Sunday.

You see when it comes to reactions from the crowd, not everything is as black and white as it seems and, from my perspective anyway, the media are barking up the wrong tree when it comes to looking for a reaction.

It’s not Carroll I’ll be barracking, it’s the slimy Spaniard!

  1. To be quite honest Carroll and Enrique have showed their true colours by jumping ship when a so called bigger team came along, why would we want players at our club who didn’t want to be there?

In a nutshell out with the old in with the new, we hardly look like a team who misses either of them anyway so good riddance to bad rubbish I just hope it was worth it!

  2. In fairness you can’t really blame Enrique as we Invested next to nothing in the squad for near on 3 years and actually made a profit on transfers, we had little direction being communicated from those above and what about the “no capital outlay” statement from the club in the pre- season to coming back up – what was anyone meant to take from that? We like the players were as pessimistic as each other and it has only been post Christmas 2011 that we have actually known Mike Ashley’s intentions with regards to nufc. It is only with hindsight we can reflect on the fortunes of one another and I bet Enrique felt he was just going to being making up the numbers for a mid-table feeder club hence he jumped ship.

On Andy Carroll, well how do I put this – oh yeah… Fukn greedy ******* that’s getting his comeuppance and long may that continue. Fat pony tailed ******!

  3. They will both get very negative reactions I reckon, particularly Carroll. But I still love this nugget form enrique:

“This club will never again fight to be among the top 6 again with this policy.”

  4. I think Enrique and Carroll will probably be a bit embarrassed to be honest but they could always look at their bank balance for comfort. I’m not really bothered anymore, Carroll we have replaced and Enrique we will replace probably this summer. They have won a cup and have Europa, they could still win the FA cup so its no like they have nothing but it is nice that we are 8 points above them and I really hope we beat them just to rub it in.

  5. MDS…he’s right, the fight is for top 5…top 6 was a stroll(hopefully) 😉 😆

Give the pair of them dogs of abuse, neither of them are legends at NUFC, ex players usually get abuse on their return to former clubs. That’s football, if ya can’t take the heat……

  6. To be honest though, Carroll should be cheered as it was selling him that made the club good again. Jose was the one who kept lying about wanting a contract extension when all he was doing was waiting for the first big club to come in for him. He backed us into a corner and it probably cost us 10M

      (Quote)

  7. To be fair to Enrique, I bet he’s as surprised to see our league position as I am. He probably feels a bit of a tool for saying we’d never challenge the top 6 again, but to be honest, when he and Barton were slating the club for having no ambition blah blah etc., I myself was pretty much in the same camp, as I’m sure many other fans were too.

At the time when we were going through a major shake up, losing Carroll, Enrique, Barton and Nolan for big money, collectively, I had big concerns over the club’s ambition. To this day though, I’m still not really sure how much of it was ‘luck’ that the likes of Cabaye, Tiote, Ba and Ben Arfa have fit into the rest of the squad so seamlessly. I’d like to think it was good planning/scouting, but it could’ve so easily gone tits-up.

With regards to Carroll, I’d agree with Toonsy, I’ve never really blamed him for leaving, but we never see what goes on behind closed doors and between players and agents.

At the end of the day I bear no hard feelings against any of our ex-players, apart from maybe Bellamy, but most ex-players will always get stick when they return to their old clubs, and rightly so in my eyes. It’s not malicious, just healthy (and often strategic) crowd banter designed to throw players off their game for the benefit of the baying fans’ team. And quite often the crowd banter is bloody funny too!

    Give ’em ****, I say! 😆

  8. Richie, just seen your comment, that’s how I feel. Players always say they thrive on the abuse anyway.

At the end of the day I’d be perfectly happy to walk past my local lollypop lady every day and be called a c*nt, then told to “f*ck off you greedy *******” by old Hazel in the Co-op as I pick up my morning paper if I was on £40k a week or whatever.

    —————————-
Hard to argue with that, but as the article says, I think Enrique made up his mind to leave long beofre Barton and Nolan were sold. He kept coming up with excuses to push bacl the contract negotiaitons and then jumped when the first “big club” (his words) came in for him.

  16. Circumstances forced Carroll out IMO.

The Toon making it clear £35m was too much to turn down and Carroll being offered more than double his wage.

    Can’t blame Carroll at all.

    I won’t be jeering him.

I don’t blame Enrique either. No one could have predicted liverpools and The Toons league placings this season and he was simply being ambitious.

He couldn’t see it happening at the Toon but who did?

      (Quote)

  17. Troy carroll whilst bids were accepted it was always his call to get treble his wages; however he was our number 9 albeit shortly and has helped us get to top 6 this season; without that money we wouldnt have cisse, ba, cabaye, etc

Enrique would be so good in our team right now 😥

  18. Is it not normally a case of booing a player and he ends up laying better and wanting to put the ball in the back of the net even more. 25. Think jeering is fine and expected.

Don’t really care to be honest, both are irrelevant to us now, both left the club when they had potential to become legends here.

Carroll – Alan Shearer. Turned down transfers, wage rises, the lot, and he could have had trophies galore. Carroll half a good season, gets the no 9 shirt, buggers off to Liverpool.

Enrique – To me he was just as slimy as Barton, using twitter to cater to gushing fans, manipulating the situation, knowing that if they questioned ambition and the board that the everyday fan would obligingly believe them and not blame them for the transfer.

Don’t begrudge either of them the move, Liverpool, regardless of how they are now, are still easily the second biggest English club. I just hated the way they both tried to manipulate the fans into forgiving them for the move, they should man up and say they wanted not, not say they were pushed or it was because Ashley was happy just avoiding relegation each year 🙄

Interesting to hear comments from Danny Simpson regarding his account closure…

“I don’t want to put myself in that position or the club in that position. Theres only so much you can read, because we’re all human and I could feel myself going to retaliate so I just needed a break.”

…sensible words and attitude from wor Danny. Some people just can’t help themselves though. I don’t go on Facebook anymore cos I got sick of waking up the morning after a skinful and seeing the mess I’d made 😆

I’m not defending by any means, but it’s crazy how you can get locked up nowadays for a mistimed and inappropriate drunken quip. I’m talking about that tool who got locked up for the Muamba tweets.

With regards to footballers and Twitter, Twitter could introduce some sort ‘moderator’ app, where all football clubs would assign a ‘Tweet Monitor’ from within their PR departments, to screen each player Tweet before it going live. Or something. I suppose that would take the fun out of it for the ‘car-crash’ general public who all love a bit of a scandal.

On topic, I pity him. Threw it all away in pursuit of money, when he had enough to live comfortably on for the rest of his days anyway. If he comes good and wins some major trophies (not gonna happen anytime soon) then you have to say fair play but if he doesn’t, and he threw away the chance to be a hero/legend in his home town…idiot

Yeah don’t agree with the Muamba sentence at all, did you see the guy who’s life was ruined because he made some sarcy comment about “blowing Heathrow sky high if they don’t hurry up!” ?

I think tweets/comments on websites etc should be taken as they are usually said, as throwaway comments like just casually chatting to your friends.
If it is harrassment, ie targetting a player, or setting up a website specifically to berate someone then i think a punishment is justified, not for twitter comments though.

By far my most fervent vitirol would be aimed at Kenny though for the way he systematicly dismantled the best team we had in ages and turned us into an impotent unit and continues his quest to this day by trying to nick our players. You see if they don’t come after Cisse ,HBA or Ba with mega bucks come the summer aargh ,I hate them and hope we completely demolish them on sunday. I think the authorities are hitting out pretty hard and making people scapegoats though. To be fair man you still feel that Carroll was “forced out” so I can only take what you say with a pinch of salt.

Really? Between KK and Sir Bobby he believed we could win trophies? Even in the Sir Bobby years we had a defence consisting of Bramble/O’Brien/Griffin/Dabizas etc we were reliant on Bobby’s management and Shearer’s goals, without either we would have had our glaring weaknesses exposed.
If he was serious about winning trophies he would have moved elsewhere. But he knew that whilst winning trophies is important, nothing beats playing for your home town club.

Christ Troy both Barca and Man Utd came in for Shearer! He could have done what you conveniently forget to mention Carroll did (TRANSFER REQUEST), but he didn’t.

Worried about our defence, place tiote just in front of them and then the other five can just be constantly attacking, not giving liverpool’s defence a moments rest, when they clear it, toto and perch receive it and send it back to the front-line.

  42. To be honest, as toon fans we should be putting all our energy into getting behind the 11 players in black and white.

Were obviously not going to cheer them, but I’m not one for booing players everytime they touch the ball. In fairness to both, neither have sold us down the river as accused.
If Enrique was to have “jumped ship” he could have done it when we got relegated!. He didn’t and was one of our best players that season, he then could have left the start of last season as well but didnt and again played well for us. He knew that he wasn’t going to get a pay increase staying at Newcastle so left. I don’t love the lad and I don’t hate him either, I thank him for playing well for Newcastle. Thereafter, he’s just another football who once played for us and now plies his trade elsewhere.
As for Carroll, Liverpool desperately wanted him and we eventually sold him!. Again, he did his job while he played for us and scored the goals that helped us stay in the EPL that season. Yes he tripled his salary but we also got some quality players in with his fee so we all done ok out of it. Carroll is also one of us, he’s a Geordie lad and I always want to see players from our region do well, whoever they play for (weird I know).
Neither player done us over or handed in a transfer request and both have silverware and will player European football next season, so putting money aside, you could argue that the moves were justified.

Enrique was stupid for mouthing off when he left, but there were alot of stupid things going on in our club during his time with us, but I do think he should have just kept his gob shut.

I think the Muamba and Petrov situation really drills home that these lads are just human, most young and immature and probably have greedy agents in their ear telling them what to do.
Fans shouldn’t wasted time and energy hating other players, we should exhaust ourselves supporting ours….. But god I hate Liverpool!!! 😆

He said ‘he had no choice he was forced out’ he sneeked out the back door for big wages (which I have no problem with. But instead of saying it was the contract of a lifetime he was happy to let the fans turn on the club again.

He was happy to see the club ruined as long as he looked OK. I say he should be given a greeting worse than the devil himself. He is a rotter. 😆

      (Quote)

  45. Stardust – I actually believe that there was an element of truth in that like. In the sense that I don’t believe Carroll wanted to leave. I could well believe that the club went to Carroll and said “we’ve been offered £35m, pack ya bags, ya leaving”. I don’t believe that board went to him and said “we’ve been offered £35m in CASH for you but we’d really like you to say” for Carroll to reply “**** off, I’m out of here”. The board would have wanted this transfer to go through knowing how beneficial it would be to the club.
He didn’t hand a transfer request in like Bent did to the scum.

I’d far sooner have ex players come back to SJP and see how passionately supportive the fans are and leave thinking “wish I was still there”

But it’s the straight lying to the fans, we vilify the board for their past deceit on here, why not the players?
What boils my blood the most is them trying to take advantage of our relationship with the board, they both turned their back on us, fair enough if they wanted more money or that Liverpool were a bigger club, I could accept both of those, but “i was forced out”, “club weren’t showing ambition”, blah blah, are just awful excuses to appease guilliable fans.

I know it’s claimed that “the board made him do it so they wouldn’t get blamed for the sale”, but it’s not like our board have cared too much about pr relations in the past is it.

Newcastle claimed that they accepted Liverpool’s £35 million offer after the striker handed in a transfer request, but Carroll said: “No I didn’t that’s what I mean that’s what they wanted me to do and I said no. They said they wanted to accept it.”
Asked if he had no choice but to move to Anfield, he replied: “Looks like it.”
Wraith then asked Carroll if he had “any message you want put across to the fans?” Carroll replied: “They said they wanted the money. Gutted to be leaving Newcastle but I was kind of pushed out the door. Gutted to be leaving my home club but I was practically told to go. Didn’t want to leave that’s why i signed a five-year deal.”

  55. If the club really did “force” carroll out (something i don’t really believe), they should be commended for making one of the best transfer decisions in the club’s history

  56. @Big Dave

Torres is not average he is ****. Carroll is as average as they come he only did well for us because our whole team played to his strengths.

  57. @Big Dave, how did they not? Ben Arfa, Tiote and Cabaye all signal ambition 😆

@Troy, never mind, live in your bubble with Barton etc.

  58. Is it just me or does Carroll come across as a helpless child when he gives interviews.
Reporter: “Andy, are you ok? Have you lost your parent club?”
    Andy nodds 😥
Reporter: “Did they make you leave?
Andy nodds 😥 “I didn’t wanna go like” wipes nose “they just pushed me oot”. 😆

  59. Think with the Carroll sale there be 3 sides to. The clubs side , Carrolls side and the truth. And the truth will be a mixture of.both sides.
And I think Nolan has a lot to answer for in my opinion. A club captain should not act in the manner he did.

Nolan was a bellend that was past his play-by-date, have you seen him in the championship, WH fans think he’s great for getting goals but he gets loads of suspensions for the captain of the team, he’s no whre near the player he was for us down there. Have to say though was impressed with how he defended Vuckic when WH played Cardiff and Haris ‘accidentaly’ nailed someone.

  61. ST how did he Lie ❓ As for ambition I think he was mainly talking about the fact that they still hadn’t replaced our main striker
As for Carroll I think Johno hits the nail on the head we have the Clubs side Carroll side and somewhere in the middle will be the truth, add to that that he is a silly youngun and had Nolan his best mate telling him he should go.

  62. To boo or not to boo that is the question?

Enrique – won’t be booing him, players come, players go end of story, but Carroll is a different matter. Shallow greedy little ****, forced out, I don’t think so, he’d just signed a five year contract, nobody could force him out if he did’nt want to go. He buggered off cause of the money.

He very conveniently forgets all about the support he got from the club when he was making virtually weekly appearances in court on one charge or another.

    Daglish – Yes cause he’s a t**t.

  63. Andy a big majority of bloggers still thought Nolan was a brill captain even though he talked Carroll into leaving, they only turned on him when he went to the hammers

  64. ST – I still don’t believe the transfer request story, Newcastle is his boyhood club and he has never looked pleased to be away.
The truth is, when they left, the club weren’t showing signs of ambition … a complaint made by almost all fans (if not all). Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But in Carrolls case, I really don’t believe we would be close to 6th spot had we not sold him.

Fans have the right to voice there opinions, whether it be to the board or player (their own or opponents). Personally I don’t like hearing it, as most of the the time it just spurs that particular player on to play better. But mainly because I prefer to focus completely on our 11 players – that’s who I go there to watch and support.
