Newcastle look at Kalou as free transfer scramble hots up

Tooning in for Kalou?
Newcastle are said to be interested in signing Chelsea attacker Saloman Kalou if reports in the Daily Mail are to be believed.

The 26-year-old is being released by Chelsea after six years at the club that have been littered with trophies and winners medals, with the latest one being a Champions League winning medal.

Kalou has made 244 appearances for the Stamford Bridge outfit, scoring 60 goals and creating another 40, although it has to be said that he has found himself used in a rotation role over the last few years. Generally though he has been a good player for Chelsea which is why I’m surprised that he is being let go.

An international colleague of Cheik Tiote, Kalou has made 48 appearances for Ivory Coast scoring 17 goals along the way. He can create goals and score goals although I have reservations about signing another player who will be off to the African Cup of Nations every other year.

Anyway, I have no idea why I wrote all of that as the report was in the Daily Mail so you can bet your last penny that nothing will come of it. Actually, I do know why I wrote it after all. Basically I just wanted to highlight the quality that is being released by clubs this year.

Kalou is just one of them, but there are others. Hoilett, Diame, Rodallega and more according to this list here so there is real scope to grab some cracking players for very little outlay in transfer fees, something which Newcastle have already done with the singing of Romain Amalfitano of course.

The only stumbling block with any high-profile free transfers will be wage demands. Not requiring a fee is one thing, but agents will know this and will want to exploit that by trying to get their client (and themselves) the best possible deal.

Are we in for Kalou? I very much doubt it due to the aforementioned wages and knowledge that he wouldn’t exactly be on a meagre wage at Chelsea, but it doesn’t mean that there are no players worth looking at on the free transfer list.

I’m sure Graham Carr has a handle on it all anyway…

  1. Big wages and sits on the bench = released. I can’t see many other reasons.. He will end up at Liverfool I reckon..

  2. other quality players being released – Rodallega??? you havin a laugh, he’s shocking, 2 goals all season, most he’s ever scored in England in a season is 10 in 42 games

  3. local rag saying toon are not after him as hes wanting 70grand a week, bye bye son good luck elsewhere

  4. Where does the bloke go from here, he has won everything there is to win with Chelsea, and has a shed load of spondoolicks ?!.

The Tiote factor may bring him to the toon, but on our terms, not his.

  5. In other news……

Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlaine’s families are not going to be at the Euro’s because of racism fears.

Can’t John Terry just stay at a different hotel?

    🙂

  7. Actually, this Kalou story didn’t originate at the Daily Mail – they’ve just regurgitated a story that first appeared on talkSPORT.

That original article said: “Sources close to Kalou have told talkSPORT that, while Newcastle are interested, he is also open to offers from across Europe.”
    http://www.talksport.co.uk/sports-news/football/premier-league/transfer-rumours/120607/newcastle-ready-move-free-agent-kalou-173848

Since the story came from “sources close to Kalou” (ie. his agent) and not from anyone connected with the club, I don’t think we should take this one too seriously.

  8. AMF nee sign of richie today mate, hes out house hunting,he spent over a hour doing his hair then went oot and left it on the table 😀

  9. I wouldn’t mind him on £70K a week tbh. We paid Smith £60K a week and he’s no Smith! If we were to pay for him it would probably be £8M + easily so all things considered it’s it’s not that bad assuming there wouldn’t be huge signing on fees. (or him having the same agent as Ba)

I don’t think paying big wages is the problem here, I think it was paying big wages and giving 5 year contracts to players like Owen and Smith. I would offer Kalou £70K for 4 years. I don’t see the problem with that, your not gonna get the top guys for nowt.

  10. Ice 🙂 🙂
Rich & I had a bit of banter earlier on today but he has gone awol.. hows things over your way.. any goss that ain’t on news now mate ?

  11. DJG – its easy spending someone else’s money mate.. 70k is a fair whack in anyone’s book!

      (Quote)

  12. I think Kalou would be a good signing, but not at 70K big ones a week… To be honest I cannae see anybody paying that wedge, apart from the arabs or chinese, and I divvent think he’s ready to go down that path…at least on a sporting front..

      (Quote)

  13. Well how much did we pay Barton over the course of 4 years? How much did he play apart from in one season? Kalou has a far better CV than him and has been available to play for most of that time, how much did we pay Smith? How much Owen? How much Viduka per goal? It’s all relative, if a player is worth it then it’s fine. If we finish top 8 from now on we can accomodate a few players on big wages, it’s what the club generates in tv money, not Ashley’s money.

  14. AMF kna mate nowt, only the mate i know at benton said there had been strangers knocking aboot there, maybe agents but knows nowt there very tight-lipped now a-days unlike richie 😉

  15. the way jabba will look at is they could get two players in for that cash and in this case i dont blame him let him tout his wage demands elsewhere imo

  16. Aussie, I see you made a guest appearance on “the dark side”…. 😉 😉 😆

    It’ll all end in tears mate… 😆

      (Quote)

  17. DJG, those signings were all made in the “good ole days”.. none of them deserved to be on those wages.. I agree Kalou would be better value but we wont pay him that kind of money. Not having a crack at you mate 🙂

      (Quote)

  18. Munich 🙂 I made a joke/jibe on here yesterday stating that .org would put a negative spin on Carr signing on for 8 years.. Read Worky’s comments and couldn’t believe what I was reading….

      (Quote)

  19. The only problem I could see would be that he would come in and be a rotation player and we would have players like Cabaye, Benny and Cisse ect. on lower wages thinking, ‘who is this kid on twice the money as me’. I think signing someone like Kalou on big wages might upset a few on lower wages. Simpson would probably say ‘but I play twice the number of games for a quarter of the wages gaffer’. Pardew will say ‘we’ve already had this discussion Danny, you are a second rate RB, not an international forward’.

  20. Has anyone seen the report on SSN where the black Dutch players were subjected to monkey chants during an open training session. Absolutely disgusting, which feckin idiots awarded this tournament?
I fear there could be serious violence before/during and after a few games if this is allowed to go unpunished.
Rant over for the day 😉

  21. Good points DJG.. good player as Kalou is, there is no way he should be one of the highest paid on our list.. Its not what this team is about nowdays. Well paid hard workers over high paid mercenaries..

  22. carr has said if they cannot get the players at the right price there will be no summer signings 🙄

  23. aussie magpie fan…I saw that mate… 😉 😉

one of the guys over there hides his lack of footballing knowledge under some kind of bizzare pseudo intellectual disguise 😆 but he has a muckle ban hammer, and I got coshed with it 😆 😆

  24. Kalou is a free agent.

It is quite simple to get round a wage ceiling.
    £1m = £20k per week.

Give Kalou four year contract with £4m signing on fee and £50k per week and this is equivalent to £70k per week over a four year period.

If Kalou was for sale at £4m and wanted 50k per week – would you not try to buy him?

  25. TGS….aye it was shocking 👿

    Speaking of “rascism”…
What do you call a field full of Aussies?

    A vacant lot! 😉

  26. TonyGreenSupreme@30, I spent half a year in Poland mate, and if you want some aggro these boys are not shy, with or without the racist angle on things.

I watched a German documentary on Polish football violence a week or so ago, and apparently they have made huge strides to combat the violence. Going so far as to photographing every fan who wants to attend the match, then the fans have to submit their ID cards to the local authorities one week before the game, AND they have to be in the stadium 4 hours before kick off.

  43. Here’s a trick question….

If you were being paid 90 Grand a week by the richest club in Britain, but still only managed to sit on the bench and play every third game or so. Would you strive to move out somewhere on loan, or would you just sit tight and take the wedge ?

      (Quote)

  44. Hmmm not sure Munich.. that seems like a trick question to me 🙂 🙂

  45. Aussie…you’ve seen through me…. 😥
