Santon set to stay and fight for his place

Santon welcomes competition
Davide Santon has revealed that he is happy on Tyneside and would welcome any competition that our summer transfer dealings could bring in over the next couple of months.

In a frank interview with CalcioMercato, Santon also revealed that United rebuffed attempts from Roma who enquired about the availability of the former Inter Milan player last season.

All in all it’s good stuff and I’m glad that Santon is relishing the competition that signing a new full back would create rather than looking for assurances over his role in the team. After a slow start to his Newcastle career he started to show his quality towards the end of last season and if he can continue to do that then he is right not to worry about competition as he’ll be in the team anyway.

“Debuchy to Newcastle? I am calm,” Santon told calciomercato.com.

“Pardew had told me that he had thought about playing me on the right, but also that another right-back would come.

“Debuchy or whoever is welcome, especially if it is a good player who can help the team. Then, we’ll see who the coach decides to pick.”

Good words from Santon there, but what about the interest from Roma?

“I know Roma are looking for a right-back and they showed interest in me some time ago, but Newcastle immediately refused to give me up,” said Santon.

“That’s okay for me because I have familiarised myself in England and I have no plans to move. I’ve only been here for a year and it is too early to pack up and come back to Italy.”

Happy to stay and happy to fight for a place in the team. Can you ask for much more?

It’s early days for Santon still, but I really think the lad can be a big player for us in years to come.

Do you agree?

  1. Good read Toonsy.

Great attitude from the lad, like his work ethic, and whatever full back side pards plays him, i’m sure he’s going to be great for us for many years.

Though i do think he’s nailed the LB postion now and when going forward drops in on his right causes the opposition problems. 🙂

  2. Bog fan of santons seems a likeable lad whos made a huge step coming here at such a young age when he could have had his pick of a fair few clubs in italy.

Love him going forward and once he drops the standing off with his hands behind his back instead of stopping crosses which Carver and Pardew both had a little pop at in their radio interview at the end of the season hell be a star… 😎

  3. I really like Santon, top lad who will hopefully only get better. I like the way he always try to play football, and doesn’t give the ball away cheaply, which is a must these days…

      (Quote)

  4. Munich@3 Got to agree there, I think he’ll get better and bettter ,he did really well considering it was his first season in a new league and still so young.

  5. kimtoon, we probably haven’t realised it yet, but in Santon AND Ben Arfa we have two real super-stars for the future. Santon will eventually return to Italy, but it’ll take a shed load of cash to get him moving…

  6. Agree MM, Santon, will go back but I hope it is not too soon.. The Roma bid/enquiry rejection goes to show that we are not the selling club some fans think 🙂 🙂

  7. Classy little player going forward and he can definitely cause more damage than Simmo-can’t expect many crosses from him on the left but as we saw against chelsea, if he can get up the pitch he can still supply a pass so that Cisse can work some magic.

Needs to work on his defense a bit more, but playing alongside Colo should certainly help him out!

      (Quote)

  8. aussie magpie fan, it stands to reason that the lad will perhaps want to head back home one day, but as you say, hopefully it will be a while before he does. By then he will be a 15 million defender….good move Ashley 😉 😉

Regarding wor foreigners, I’m still mega impressed by the way wor Argy lads have lasted the pace in the toon. 2 toon legends if you ask me, it’s a pity we cannot find more of this type down Argy way, surely they both have good contacts down there ??

  9. Big D….did you notice one lad posted on the dark side, trying to defend someone, and the post suddenly disappeared ? 😆 😆 😆 😆

It’s scary what goes on ower there…some blokes spend hours trying to get on there to post abuse. Way out of order imo… 👿 👿 👿 🙁

  10. Eminem, if we can secure a couple of hard working pros like Jonas and Collo, I would be wrapped.. apparently Dekka and Co have travelled there to wrap up a deal (according to the press) It must have been a stop over on the way to Holland 🙂 🙂

Werder Bremen here in Jaaarmany have a great record of pulling jewels out of south america, Brazil, eastern europe etc…. we could do worse than follow there lead..

Argentina was always famous for it’s rock-hard defenders….maybe the standard of the local league has gone back…. 🙁

  14. what does people think of putting a 10 mill offer on the table for sturridge and get hoilet what pace we could have up front if ba and cissi are away in jan them two would cause any defence problems

When Decca & co flew from Newcastle to Amsterdam I don’t believe they were going to Enschede to negotiate a deal for De Jong.

I think they simply walked through Schiphol airport to catch the connecting Amsterdam to Buenes Aries flight.

  20. When you consider that this was a 20yr old lad moving from Inter Milan, having been coached by the ‘special one’, and he moves the Newcastle – albeit with the likekihood of more first team football. Alot of players would struggle with that kind of move, and let’s be honest, some players would see it as a step down.
He has came over without the comfort a French player would have, knowing their are Countrymen at the club.
Santon has taken a little while to settle in, but he has never publicly moaned about not being selected or being played on the left when he prefers the right or anything like that.
His attitude is first class and that’s testament to him and his family, but I also think Pardew and his team have handled Santon really well, helping him and allowing him time to find his feet and feel comfortable.

I like the look of Debuchy, and with him on the right and Santon left we are going to have great threat down the flanks – I would just worry when it came to defending though. Time will tell and I have every faith in Pardews vision

  21. MM (from the last article on Stuttgart)
TBF most Bundesliga clubs have massive stadiums after the World Cup. If we’d had gotten 2018 St James’ would prob be increased to a 75-80k stadium.

      (Quote)

  22. Sharpy17, aye Santon sems to have a mature head on his shoulders, and the “special one” obviously gave him some good crack about Newcastle due to his Sir Bobby connections…

  23. Regarding Santon, interesting really that we paid 5 million squids for a 20 year old bairn from Milan, but we are baulking at paying 6 million squids for the current French international right back who is at the peak of his career… 🙄

      (Quote)

  24. MM
I wouldn’t be suprised if in a few years when we’re back fighting for top 3/4 every season, getting CL regularily and Pardew’s left we bring in Jose, as I think SBR has told him how great we were and he’ll know from his time at Chelsea what our fans and stadium is like.

      (Quote)

  25. Andymag…. you might find quite a few of the German stadiums were of a decent size anyway before the world cup…

Not sure how Cashley could expand SJP to 80K. The major option is to put a further tier on the Gallowgate End which may bring in 10K news spaces ??

Remember the daft old days when a new stadium was being mooted on the Town Moor for the toon, with the rugby lads taking over SJP ? Would look a bit daft now with the rugby team in the 2nd division playing in front of sub 10K crowds at Kinky Park… 🙁

      (Quote)

  26. Santon seems like a decent lad, and as has been said it mustn’t be that easy to come to a new league with players he doesn’t know and in a new country.
I think he will turn out to be a real cracking player for us.

      (Quote)

  27. MM
Debuchy is much older, isn’t as experienced in European matches and was only recently a ‘house-hold name’. Whereas Santon is an experienced CL player, still very young and only a couple of years ago was being touted as having the potential to be one of the greatest full-backs in the world. Just look at SS.com at the ‘scout’ section and it’s got a profile of Davide from about 3 years ago where it says he has the potential to cost 28m.

      (Quote)

  28. yes good on the flanks but still need one or two centre backs one who can cover left back we have never been strong at the back time to show teams we are strong all over the park

      (Quote)

  29. Andymag, would love to see the special one at the toon…

German media blathering on “De Jong’s club of choice Borussia Mönchengladbach….”….. we were NEVER in with a chance of signing this lad…

    Spuds chasing Lewandowski at Dortmund 25K euros….howay man, give ower… 😯 😯 😯

Kagawa from Dortmund to Manure for 12 million euros, Reus from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Dortmund for 17 mill euros as replacement. Although Kagawa is a great striker, what a BRILLIANT bit of business by Dortmund. Reus is going to be immense, just watch, you read it here first. That’s why Borussia have so much wedge and can try to snap up De Jong…

btw no worries peeps, Arsenal have paid a lot of money for a dud in Lucas Podolski, 100 caps aye, but he couldn’t make it at FC Bayern, and he’ll turn out to be average at Arsenal too… a one trick pony with a hammer of a left foot, but who cannot dribble at all, which is strange for a winger…;-) 😉

      (Quote)

  30. Andymag@32…spot on there. Santon could be a real brilliant full back. The good thing is that the Italian clubs are not loathe to spend massive amounts of money, so when he does go, we’ll get a canny wedge for him. He’s the Italy sprogs captain too I believe…

  32. Andymag….who Podolski ? I would say Asharvin is way better than Podolski as a footballer…

      (Quote)

  33. MM
Me too, that’s why it annoyed me why the British press were jizzing over Arsenal signing him. I hate the bias that they’ll do a whole player profile for an Arsenal signing like Podolski and Giroud where they’ll give us their career history. Whereas they’ll barely acknowledge any of the smaller clubs’ signings & ours.

      (Quote)

  34. Andymag…probably cos he has 100 caps, and it’s probably somewhat of a coup to get a seasoned Polish……oops…German international coming to the EPL….Giroud, we’ll see what he achieves this season…..

believe me, Podolski will fall flat. He’s also a bit of a daft lad, which probably didn’t make its way into the UK press… 😉

      (Quote)

  35. Andymag…not daft, he’s just an eternal joker, playing tricks and stuff. Not in the Gazza mode at all, but a bit of a joker.

      (Quote)

  36. MM – yeah, that’s a valid point about paying £5m for Santon. I think that obviously shows how highly they rate him, and I’m sure at 20 they would have given some thought to a sell on fee.

I was laughing at Robert Pires encouraging Debuchy to come to Newcastle. He started with some very kind words then finished by saying we would be a good stepping for him… cheeky sod 😆

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy17….I noticed that too about Pires, the cheeky monkey !!

Murray, first set, what a fight back !!! Go on my son !!

  38. I wonder if the club will be having words with Cabaye after his latest interview 😕 Strikers Ba and Papiss Cisse are being targeted by other clubs and Cabaye says it is crucial they stay if Newcastle are to progress as a club.

“Demba scored so many goals for us so it’s going to be important to keep him – and keep all the big players,” Cabaye revealed.

“I hope the board are going to do the right things to keep them.

“I don’t know if we can go higher than last season, but we have to keep doing the right thing.”

      (Quote)

  39. Dave – I don’t see why. I seen the same quotes and think it’s be twisted…as per the norm.

      (Quote)

  40. Dave – I like Cabaye but think he needs to keep his trap shut at times. I’ve no problem with him wanting the club to keep our best players, but telling the club to ‘do the right thing’ may just have Ashley wanting Pardew to have a quiet word. No problem with players having opinions but diplomacy when speaking with the press is needed I think.

      (Quote)

  41. MM
    A mild Balotelli then? 😆
TBF on Pires we are still a stepping stone for these good players. We’d be a fool to think that Barca or Real wouldn’t turn our players heads. That’s why you join a PL club to get more attention.

      (Quote)

  42. Evil I don’t know if they’ve been twisted because he said the samething a few months ago and they’re all quotes from him.
Sharpy yeah I know what you mean but it does show that some of the players think the same as us, because as I said before if we keep building our top players should be happy but if we start to go backwards the top players will be looking at their futures, we need Euro footie to keep them happy IMO.

      (Quote)

  43. Though on Debuchy’s case he’s quite old so I doubt he’ll make a big move after us, that is unless he REALLY impresses next season.

      (Quote)

  44. Newkie
They’re a bit low on solid attackers. Also we don’t know that Vertonghen will be a success in the PL.

The smaller clubs are after players that are below us and the big clubs are throwing a lot of money about.

  46. We are biding our time, making sure we secure the right players for the right price.

      (Quote)

  47. Andy-maybe so, but when a player like defoe hardly get’s a game you know they have some quality up front. Decent in the hole players like VDV and now Siggurson means they can rotate properly to their hearts content, plus they look pretty sure to get adebayor now as well….

May not be a success but he’s bound to be better than Ledley King..i’m sure he lost them several matches on his own last season.

      (Quote)

  48. Its irritating because Spurs and Arsenal are the ones we want/need to be competing with because they’re generally “business run” like ourselves….

      (Quote)

  49. Andy @ 57 yeah thats a good approach but sometimes you wait about trying to get a player cheaper when someone else nips in and pays what they want, which will mean we don’t get our 1st choice 😯 I don’t think its a case of the bigger teams throwing money about I think its more a case of if its the right player then you pay for them and get it done and dusted and give them time to settle in 😉

      (Quote)

  50. Andymag according to the Jaarman media Spuds are sniffing around Lewandowski at 25 million teuros… 😳 😳 🙄 canny player like, but 25 mill is madness. Can see him leaving though, cos Dortmund have just signed Reus…

Hamburg also hoping to re-sign Van der Vaart, that would give them some quids in the bank….

      (Quote)

  51. If I was an Arsenal fan I’d be worried about the momentum spurs are building up…. It can all go tits up though if the man in the trench coat cannot get his team of undoubted superstars performing rightly…

Kin ‘el, Bale, Van der Vaart, Adebayor, Modric, now a good centre half signed up…….canny line up that like…

      (Quote)

  52. MM
Aye I think Spurs will be a bigger challenge next season than Arsenal will if they lose RVP. Mind you we’ll see how they’re affected if Modric leaves.
    Evil
You beat me to it 😡 😉

      (Quote)

  53. Big D@60, spot on there like. There’s nowt like being frugal and biding your time, but the time comes when you need to splash the cash and get the players in you need… 🙁

      (Quote)

  54. I reckon we put the right willies up the top clubs last season as they are all throwing the cash about this window ,Even tightwad arsenal are spending 😉 .How funny it would be if we could repeat the feat without spending silly money again ,somehow I can’t see though. If we get some quality in we might but that will defo be the difference imo.

      (Quote)

  55. Kimtoon, if I was at Spurs, and see the way they are going about building, I’d be tempted to hang around. Having first playing the tactical game of getting myself a 10K per week pay rise first of course 😉

There again, if Vila Boas doesn’t like his dish then maybe he’s outahere anyway, and Spuds get 35mill teuros…Siggurdsson seems like a canny replacement for him too if you ask me… 🙁

      (Quote)

  56. Dave – like I say, don’t disagree with what Cabaye said, he just has to be careful coz the press do twist things, I agree tho that I don’t think they have on this occasion.
I just think that players are paid to play football – paid very well!! and maybe they should just do that, rather than come out with stuff like this when we haven’t even received a bid for any of our players yet.

      (Quote)

  57. MM I can understand biding your time for a luxury type player or a back up but when they are 1st choice and what we need just stop fuking about and get the player rather than risk losing them to another team because of a few quid 😕

      (Quote)

  58. Sharpy17 regarding Cabaye’s “outburst”, I reckon all the clubs are cute and aware of the games the press play. Pardew sees his players every day, he’ll know what the crack is. I’m sure there is no disruption at the toon, don’t forget Pardew may actually like his star players mouthing off, cos it saves him having to do it with Cashley and Dekka…. 😉

      (Quote)

  59. Sharpy I sort of agree but the player are only human and maybe sometimes when they’re being interviewed the don’t think about staying on the fence and just tell the truth of how they feel. tis the same with Santon when he revealed about pards telling him about getting another player in and mentioning Debouchy ❓
