Expect a stronger side to be played this evening

Colo back in action this evening
Newcastle take on AS Monaco this evening in what will be our second game of pre-season to date.

Kick-off is at 7pm local time (6pm UK time) and the match is scheduled to be broadcast live from the Hacker-Pschorr Sports Park Arena courtesy of ESPN.

Newcastle lost their opening fixture of the pre-season schedule 1-0 to German third division side Chemnitzer FC although it must also be pointed out that our starting line up barely resembled the one which will start in the opening Premier League game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur in approximately one months time and was instead filled with what can be called fringe players and prospects.

However this evening we are likely to see a stronger line up with Fabricio Coloccini set to start and Papiss Cisse, Cheik Tiote and Sylvain Marveaux likely to play some part in proceedings this evening. There will still be a chance for some youngsters to shine with James Tavernier tipped to start at right-back with an opportunity for more to shine during the course of the match.

I remember a time when Newcastle played AS Monaco in the UEFA Cup. It wasn’t that long ago to be fair and if I recall correctly they knocked us out (remember Jean Tigana and has chewy matchstick thing?). Right now though they languish in the French Ligue 2 after failing to win promotion back to Ligue 1 at the first attempt. In contrast we’ve followed the same path but managed to escape the second tier at the first time of asking and now we’re back in Europe.

Funny how things work out isn’t it?

  1. Aye toonsy… I remember watching us play Monaco at SJP in the quarter final of the UEFA Cup about 15 years ago or more. We did get beat unfortunately 😥

  2. Ba is a complete Striker. He is quite capable of playing with his back to goal.
Cisse and Ba are both over six foot. Like to play in the centre and are great finishers.
    Competely agree with Newkie.
We don’t need a big target man. Does Man U have one, does Barca, does Madrid?
No… Because there football had moved beyond that.
Man City were at their best with Tevez, Aguerro and Silva.

Spain are double world and Euro champs. Who is their target man.
Too many oldies on here like king Kenny are stuck in a past and expired mentality of football style.

  3. Looking at their line up i’m wondering how the hell we failed to score… oh that’s right, kenny dalglish was in charge then with his negative defensive tactics

  4. Does anyone know if there will be free a link to watch?

I remember the 3-0, they played us off the park!

Hopefully no repeat, even in a friendly!!

  5. **** – probably going to miss this one. There must be some streams, right?

It’ll be very interesting to see how Pards sets things out. I’m hoping to see the likes of Tav getting a lot of chances. Mind you, last year it was Gosling and look what happened there.

C’mon Tav – do yer thaing!!

  6. Gosling just needs some serious game time-he still never got any last year, I guess we couldn’t risk it. This season is a big opporunity for him. By the sounds of things he and Sammeobi are the only ones that turned up last week. Just want some light entertainment and an injury free match! Especially if timmy is playing…

Nice to see the delusion is still live and kicking on here. Comparing our play to Barca 😆

  8. We really need these kids to come through now. Our ‘buy cheap foreigners’ policy is in its last window before it goes past its shelf life. I’m hoping that Gosling, Tav, Sameobi and Fergie all earn regular game time this term.

Monaco are decent opposition though; good practice for the Europa. Would love to see us spank ’em – need the confidence.

  9. Pardiola,

It’s not my fault you are too thick to see I’m comparing the brand of football rather than saying we are Barca
If Swansea can play a decent passing game and excel as a newly promoted club, there is no reason we can’t play an attractive style with technically superior players.

If you want us to sign Carroll and play like Stoke then that’s your opinion I guess.

  10. Schifo in the bench – what a great player. Sonny Anderson was also brilliant.

  12. Pardiola-I missed the match mate so I can’t really comment, I was just going by the general reports i’ve read and what people have mentioned.

  13. Everyone see the team for tonight: I would of liked to see us play more of a 433/451 and start getting used to that but looks like we’re in for more 442 this season.

Anybody else think we were better last year in games we played 433? 😯 😯

  14. @BigPapa Yep, thought we looked much better in 4-3-3, but only with our ‘big’ players.

No offence to Abeid, Amalfitano and Biggi, but can you see them playing the system as well as Cabaye, Tiote and Ben Arfa?

The game tonight is about fitness and seeing what the likes of the above and Sammy can do. Don’t read too much into the formation used at this point.

    3-5-2??

  16. Is it possible that Bigi is being played defensively? I thought I read that he was a lot like a defensive midfielder? Maybe I am way off on that. Just thinking that perhaps his speed and height may work to partner Williamson in the center. Otherwise 3-5-2 it would seem.

  17. HAHAHAHA. Just as the article picture mention him,he isnt on the team sheet tonight. 😆 😆

  18. Looking forward to the game and a first glance of Bigi in TOON colours .Be nice to see Amalfitano and Abeid too. 😎

I imagine they are using Jonas at LB.

Simpson in the middle yet on his way out the door. Lack of CB depth showing through again I’m afraid.

  20. Don’t think that I like the new kit, though I’m sure it’ll grow on me. Ba was close just before like. 😮

  21. Any decent text commentary…at work til 7:30 so can’t stream the game. Got it recording for when I get home though.
