What a Liberty!

Calamity strikes
Calamity strikes
I honestly think that when it comes to football results I’m one of the most measured guys out there.

Not in terms of guessing or predicting or anything like that as I’m awful at that. However I rarely get carried away with a win and almost never get down about a defeat providing the performance is good enough.

Until now that is. The 1-0 defeat to Swansea has left me feeling pretty peeved if I’m being honest. You may have noticed that I didn’t bother with a match report after the game such was/is my feeling of anger about the game. What I don’t get, and what I’ve been trying to piece together since Saturday, is why this defeat in particular has annoyed me so much.

Do I dislike Swansea? No I actually quite like them and have nothing against them unlike a Liverpool or Sunderland for example. Do I dislike their manager? Players? Fans? Not especially. I sometimes think a lot of praise is given for little reason but generally they deserve it, play nice football, keep themselves to themselves (unlike a Harry Redknapp for comparison purposes) and just get on with it.

Was I annoyed with our performance? Not really. I thought we played well and equalled the pass masters of the Premier League and had a fair share of the chances. Tactics? Again no real issues here. Player performance? Nope, all clear here also.

So what has left me feeling so let down about the Liberty?

I think it’s the realisation that we’re still in the relegation mix. Results and performances have improved no end and we most definitely deserved something from the Liberty Stadium, but ultimately we got nothing which doesn’t help us in the short term.

I keep hearing that we have a squad to challenge in Europe AND secure safety, but league tables don’t lie after this amount of games and we’re still in the danger zone. Games are running out and we need points on the board pretty quickly.

We should know more than most that you’re never too good to go down!

  1. Completely agree with the article, feel incredibly frustrated because we desrved something from the game but came up with nothing. We are playing good football and threaten to finish in the top half but results seem to be against us and we are back to square one in terms of the table. Overall it leaves a particularliy bitter taste.

  2. Yep was gutted about it as I think we deserved at least a point. At the moment though I have very little to none worries about relegation, I’m certain(well almost) that we’ll be fine.
I suppose technically we are slightly better off now than we were before the Swansea game, the gap between us and relegation is still 6 points and those 3 clubs have one less game to close the gap 😉 KTF 😀

  3. I guess I was quite lucky in that I slept through the game, it’s allowed me to keep a fair bit calmer because I didn’t see us lose. I’m still annoyed, esp as I thought it was a game we could have nicked, but the game was what it was. I was desparate for a win because I thought that would have glided us to safety, but on the back of a loss and heading into a tough/rough match against Anzhi, where apparently our stars will be playing, I’m a bit worried as to where that will leave the squad…

  4. Said all along we only need 36 points for safety.

A win against Stoke and we are basically there. Its a big game. It’ll mean we need just one more victory to secure safety.

  5. Toonsy .I share you’re feeling on the game mate. I thought it was gutting to come away with nowt ,we were worth a point at least imo. To conceed such a late scruffy joke of a goal is just our luck this season and we seem to be running to stand still at times . Hopefully a win on thursday will lift spirits and stand us in good stead for Stoke who I really want us to beat as I ain’t too keen on them tbh. Stuck on 30 points with 10 games left there’s 30 points up for grabs ,surely we can get 10 from that 🙄 .

Andy @695 previous blog .I ain’t too worried about missing out on him as not too keen going on various reports on him like.

  6. I’m thinking 4-1 win against Stoke. Cisse with two, Gouffran one and a late one from Shola 😯 😀
If we managed that all the negativity will disappear and we’ll be looking to climb up the table.
If QPR and Scum draw then I’ll be even happier.

      (Quote)

  7. JJ ,I can’t believe QPR got that win V Saints on saturday ,wish they’d just lay down and die tbh ,Villa too. 👿

      (Quote)

  8. JJ… I think you’re right, 36 could well be enough and we’ll have that by the time the mackems come to town…those 3 points will just be the icing on the cake 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  9. Kim,
I’ll be devastated if QPR stay up.

I can see Norwich slipping into the relegation battle and Reading look in free fall. But two I’d most like to see go down are QPR and Villa.

  10. Agree at 3 & 4
Saw bits of the match on a dodgy stream on my phone, but we looked OK. Obviously disappointing by the result but must admit for me I was only hoping for a draw and never bought into this “it was a must win or we are doomed stuff”.
So a point lost. I still think that we have enough to survive.

Was disapointed we were still being linked with him with what I see to be better targets that we’re supposed to be scouting.
Can’t wait for Stoke hope to give us a win by going over to see the match, didnt work for Swansea but did for QPR so I’m optimistic. Will bring my lucky 2010/11 strip just in case and if we win I might buy this season’s, want to get a new one before its covered in wonga sponsership.

QPR and Villa re the two that I want down, after that I’m not too bothered (as long as its noit us), although I don’t mind Reading, Soton and Wigan and dont want hoots to go down, who does that leave 😆 .

But then who would shola score against 😕 ❓ 😆 I don’t want to see the scum do better than us but it takes a lot of the fun out if they are relegated, the NE derby is arguably the best in the UK and I love to watch it.

  14. Villa and Qpr and and reading, dont want the scum to go down i love the derbies too much 🙂

  15. Toonsy – I think this article is better than any game stat article you could have posted. Summed up my post match feeling as well mate.
Throughout the game I thought we played some really good football and had a couple of really good goal scoring opportunities to win the game. At around 80mins I had resigned myself to a draw though, thinking under the circumstances, both teams would settle for that like, and actually with the way the other results were going, a point wouldn’t be the end of the world.
I was a bit disappointed the mackems had just equalised but our draw would keep us above them. It’s was around that time of working out how the table was likely to stand at the end of Sat that Luke Moore stumbled his way through and despite my loudest shout at the laptop, the little get striped us of a well deserved point.

Maybe that was the only difference between the 2 teams on the day, they had a CF on the bench who could come on and nick a goal. I definitely think we matched them in every other area, and if we can turn that level of performance in every weekend for the remainder of the season then we will accrue enough points to avoid the bottom 3 comfortably.

      (Quote)

  16. Agree the Derbies are agony and ecstasy in equal measure for me depending on the outcome 😉

quite looking forward to the Manure match actually 😉

  17. Toonsy good read, I felt the same about the game etc, but I don’t know why but Relegation hasn’t entered my head from we strengthened the team,
Ok a win at the Swans would have gave us a valuable 3 pts but imo we played well enough to win never mind draw, so on the playing side I am pretty happy that we won’t be where we are in the table for too long.

  18. I still reckon we’ll finish where I predicted at start of the season…between 8-10 😉

      (Quote)

  19. Moreno I was going to say I don’t think we’ll finish that well, but just had a look there and we’re only 3 pts away from 10th spot so you never know, I was going to predict 10-12 but 😕

  20. DAVE did you see the dig RICHIE gave you y/day,not that i would grass but he said you needed a boomerang on your belt to get it round your waist 😯 😉

  21. Dave,

Have to say 10th would be the best we could hope for…scrape into the top half. At the end of the day though, as long as we are above Sunderland and the drop zone I am content.

I am sure the league finish will impact transfer spending too with the rewards on offer per place.

      (Quote)

  22. Ice you must be mistaken as Richie wouldn’t have a dig at me as he knows I watch his back when he’s not about .
Moreno i’ll agree with you on that lad

  24. Moreno – nah mate, want Man U to win. Actually hoping they get the treble this season and than the old Scotish git may decide to retire on a high. It would be worth the taste of sick in me mouth seeing Man U do well if it finally got shot of that horrid ****!.

10th spot finish for me this season I think, still very tight down there at the moment tho.

      (Quote)

  25. Richie I knew Ice was trying to catch me out there, im surprised he tried that one like as he knows I think highly of you as us squaddies have to look out for eachother and I knew you wouldn’t talk behind my back 😉

Second is I love seeing Fergie cry and blame everyone else when things don’t go right, make a fool out of himself
Third, I can’t be arsed listening to all the Man Utd fans down in here in London go on about it in their cockney accents, really gets on my tits

  31. could of went either way, most of our shots were from long range, they had the ball cleared not quite off the line but when it was past our keeper, they even might of had a pen for a debuchy handball, they probably edged it overall

what hurts me is luke moore scoring from a scrappy defensive mix up, wasn’t soooooo pretty

      (Quote)

  32. Even the Scottish Dave? Considering they want out of Britain at the earliest opportunity I don’t have a lot of time for them…

My Spanish days and more specifically, how annoying all the Barca fans were in the bar I worked in back in the day, are the reason I am a Madrid fan. And Zidane. Greatest player I have ever seen with my own eyes.

    MM,
Heard Roberto Carlos spouting off saying we don’t have a chance.

      (Quote)

  33. he was misqouted as far as i can see moreno, he was qouted as saying they are always the favourites whenever they play, then it’s been twisted somewhat

fergie, ameobi and abied all started tonight

  34. Alan,

Fair enough in that case! Gonna say a guy of his pedigree shouldn’t take it for granted, he knows the atmosphere in a city like hours for the second leg may swing it in our favour. Still, uphill task then you have prem league games a few days either side. Half of me says forget it and half says try win it…..these guys are a step up but there are much better teams in the competition than us come the next round. Worth the risk…?

      (Quote)

  35. Moreno, that’s what I’m on about mate. Cheeky twatbags spouting off, they aren’t even a proper football team if you ask me 👿 👿

Funny like but there is a debate going on at the moment in the Bundesliga about “Werksklubs” i.e. teams which have there roots in being a sporting club from a company, and whether they deserve to be in the Bundesliga at all (3 teams are involved – Bayer Leverkusen (Bayer), Wolfsburg (VW) and Hoffenheim (SAP). Last week Wolfsburg took 123 fans to a Bundesliga away game, and the owner of the home side was pissed off because he had to leave 2000 seats unsold due to crowd segregation…

  38. Alan,

I don’t know any but wonder if you gave Birmingham fans the choice, league cup that year for the cabinet or stay in the league…wonder which they would have taken

      (Quote)

  39. Suppose it’s not really a comparison as the league cup isn’t classed as a ‘major’ trophy is it?

  40. Dave 😉

Are you getting on a bit when you can remember when Fergie wouldn’t let “young Giggs” do tv interviews on his own? 😐

  41. I would say that all the NUFC fans I know personally, none of them whinge about lack of trophies…maybe tongue in cheek but I think we just accept we are where we are, we’ll never be challenging for major honours in our lifetime and if we see the odd wonderful moment like the 4-4 against Arsenal or the 5-1 against Sunderland…we’re content.

I think it’s a myth that our fans whinge about no trophies, in my own personal experience anyway.

To be fair to my boys up here not everyone wants out of Britain, my reckoning is 2 in 5.

  43. Richie @ 55 or is it Ice 😕 😕 😯 Yeah I can remember when Ciggs wasn’t even allowed in a room of his own and always had a baby sitter at all times

Moreno if you were talking about Celtic @ 45 thats different as I don’t class them as British and I don’t think they class themselves as British either 😉

      (Quote)

  44. i think a lot gets made of the extra games, stoke are always given as an example, i think they finished there season in europe with about 3 points less than the year they qualified, maybe people think they finished lower in the league or something but they qualified by losing the cup final, not league position

  45. Andy,

I was in Dundee and the anti-English sentiment was rife up there. Very few have ever left the perimeter of their scheme mind but they wanted England to ‘get t’ f*ck’ and stop taking our oil money.

Maybe I just heard it more being English and when you dn’t have an Englishman in the mix the views are a bit more reasonable and thought out 😆

  46. Big Dave at 59,

It was incredible last year, I walked down one of the local high streets in Dundee and the amount of Irish flags etc was unbelievable. All these boys born and raised on the East coast of Scotland flying the Irish flag, I get the historic reason etc but still can’t get my head round it 😕

Wouldn’t care, there’s 2 teams in this city and the amount of Old Firm fans is unbelievable

      (Quote)

  47. Moreno, I worked with a bunch of sweaty’s on contract abroad a load of years ago and they were all nice as ninepence when they were on there own, but get them all together and full of drink and they were a right bunch of croutons, terrorising the non-scots. I just put it down to the Scot’s inferiority complex and hatred of all things English 😳

      (Quote)

  48. We need to get some points from the next two games against Stoke and Wigan to ease the the fear of needing points from our last two or three games to stay clear of relegation.

This fear goes back to our last relegation when we were relatively safe with ten games to go and failed by one point to stay up.

We have Anzhi in Moscow prior to the home game against Stoke then Anzhi at home prior to the away game at Wigan which does not really help us. Our last Europa game cost us Krul .

Stoke and Wigan need the points as much as we do and these will be tough games. Similarly , the games to come against Fulham , Sunderland , West Ham and QPR are not going to be ‘walkovers’,but we must take points from them.

I think 37 or 38 points should see us safe but I wont sit easy until we achieve that target.
