Norwich v Newcastle – Premier League match preview

Canaries v Magpies
Canaries v Magpies
Newcastle head to East Anglia tomorrow evening where Norwich City will attempt to further darken the clouds hanging over Tyneside.

Those clouds are brewing mainly because of the situation with Yohan Cabaye and reported transfer interest from PSG.

Personally I’ve tried to stay away from any transfer talk this window as most of it is baloney, but Alan Pardew’s public doubt regarding the ability to keep Cabaye combined with the transfer blueprint at United are not exactly good signs.

However football is cyclical and players come and go. It would be a shame to see Cabaye leave, especially in the form that he is in right now, but these things happen in football. I’ve long gone past the stage of becoming emotionally attached to players under this regime and we all know that every player has their price and once it is matched then that is generally the end of it.

Anyway I’m in danger of getting into a rant about it so I’ll curtail my thoughts on the matter for if, or when, anything concrete develops. For now it’s back to the football.

Norwich:

Jonas Gutierrez is ineligible to face his parent club as he is only only loan at Carrow Road from United. The Canaries are also without injured duo Michael Turner (hamstring) and Jonny Howson (back) while Elliott Bennett is doubtful.

Newcastle:

Mathieu Debuchy is available once again after serving his three game suspension. Fabricio Coloccini is sidelined with a knee injury while Ryan Taylor continues his long road back to fitness.

Previously…

Newcastle have not won at Norwich for 20 years although admittedly there has only been four games played at Carrow Road since that victory in January 1994.

Unsurprisingly this fixture tends to favour the home side. Of 24 meetings in East Anglia, United have won just six times with ten victories for Norwich.

Overall though we have the edge, just. The 49 games contested between the two sides have yielded 24 wins for the Magpies compared to just 14 for the Canaries.

Stats and facts…

Newcastle are looking for a 300th Premier League victory.

Loic Remy and Yohan Cabaye have scored as many goals as the entire Norwich squad so far this season.

Norwich have not won back-to-back Premier League matches since the final two games of 2012-13.

Final thought…

When Newcastle apply themselves they can beat anyone on the day. This season has also shown that we aren’t afraid to play away from St James’ Park with six league wins clocked up on the road already this term.

However Norwich have a knack of winning when they need to. Much of the talk prior to Norwich beating Hull last time out was regarding the future of Chris Hughton. Apparently a defeat would have signalled the end of his tenure at Carrow Road, but they won the game and the talk has gone away.

I say this every away game, but there are no easy fixtures on the road in the Premier League. Getting back to application, if United can apply themselves and play as we can without any distractions from this whole Cabaye scenario then we have the tools to win.

Howay the lads!

  1. Newkie, No Cabs, no Cisse (bad back ) and no Goofy, let’s hope Remy is up for it and doesn’t get injured before the Scum game or we will be relying on Shola and some Benny magic unless young Adam can step up 😉

  3. Grenier and Gomis in now for me please Joe – you have the best part of 4 days left to sort it so show us what you’re about you little drunken get!.

    As for tomorrow:

    ——————– Krul —————–
    Debuchy – Saylor – Willo – Santon
    — Sissoko —- Tiote —- Anita —
    —- Marveaux ——— Benny —-
    ——————- Remy —————

But what I’d expect Obertan to probably take Marvs place if I’m honest. I really hope Adam Armstrong gets a run out if he’s on the bench though. I’d love to think him and Campbell are our future front line.

  4. We’ll not bring anybody in. If we have any ambition then we will. We don’t need to really (in mikes eyes) as we’re safe.

I wonder how our players respond to this. If we don’t sign anybody the players will question our ambition too. Lack of passion for cups, Europe.

I’ll be surprised if there isnt a mass exodus come the summer.

  5. This might sound harsh but I am not that fazed by Cabaye leaving.. He is a very good player but he very rarely bosses a game in the centre of the park
Give Anita the run of the show and see how he goes.. Dare I say it..Cabaye is slighty over rated

  6. Kim-our record isn’t great at Carrow but we beat them this year and last year at SJP and got a draw at theirs last year. Year before that we did lose 4-2 but we had Perch and Simmo at CB so that tells its own story. Is Cisse definitely out then? All of them being out is definitely worrying. I wanted to rest Shola for the mackems as well 😀

  7. Given the available players for tonight, I’d try to keep our usual 4-2-3-1 and make as few changes to personnel as possible. So… restore Debuchy, Benny for Cabaye and push Santon forward.

    Krul
    Debuchy, Willo, M’Biwa/Saylor, Haidara
    Anita, Tiote
    Sissoko, Benny, Santon
    Remy

Alternatively, drop Remy to LF and play Shola upfront. Our bench will be a joke either way – no Cisse or Obertan even!

  8. Blip-would be interesting to see that, have wondered whether Santon would be any good further up field. Agree with that start up otherwise only change I’d make would be Sammy in for Santon.

Good news about De Jong I guess. Will be worth the loan if he helps us win vs the mackems.

      (Quote)

  9. LOL at our potential bench options – Elliott, Armstrong, Marveaux, Shola, Saylor/M’Biwa, Dummet, Sammy, Haidara

Strength in depth, eh? Given the lack of options, maybe we should recall Vuckic. At least he can play the #10 role.

      (Quote)

  10. I hope De Jong is only on loan.
I really want us to get in the Grenadier fella.
    sounds explosive 😆

      (Quote)

  11. Newkie, Santon was pushed up briefly in one of our recent matches to accommodate Haidara. Maybe against Arsenal? I can’t remember.

It seemed to work for him, so we may as well try it again. Nothing to lose, really. If fatty and Kinnear are happy to throw the second half of this season away, we may as well experiment a bit before next year!

      (Quote)

  12. Mark at 81.. that “we won’t sign anyone “misery didnt last too long mate 😆

      (Quote)

  13. as i said @25 pardew has said we signed french players with a promise they were trying to get into the CL and when we dont get there they want to leave for clubs that are in CL,what a con, jabba will not spend that kind of money to get there,a few more will suss it out too,mid table is all we will ever get imo

      (Quote)

  14. Is it a coincidence that the day after Cabaye deal is agreed De Jong is on his way for medical? Are we really that skint that we needed to sell Cabaye in order to bring in a loan player?

      (Quote)

  15. don’t think Pardum has the vision required to play Santoon at LW.
Its a good call tho as he wont need to track back to defend. Which he is excellent at not doing.
Been saying it for months, but Pardum will keep playing him at LB.

      (Quote)

  16. Prem
I don’t doubt at all that we will get less points without Cabaye, we probably wouldn’t have beaten Man U or West Ham away for a start! The question is how will the squad be restructured, and that includes life after Remy and a few others as well as just Cabaye.

      (Quote)

  17. Stuart, what part of the club saying that we need to sell to buy are you not understanding mate? 😯

      (Quote)

  18. De Jong on way for medical then , oh well lets hope he finds his lost form with us , can we have Grenier now please Mike.

      (Quote)

  19. Aussie – that is NOT official club policy mate.
Good job we’re not as stupid as they think we are.

      (Quote)

  20. Blip-yeah that rings a bell now you mention it. He still can’t cross for toffee but at least if he cuts in and loses it/shoots and it gets saved, we don’t have to worry about him being out of position. I think Dummett and Haidara are stronger defensively than him actually, problem is we can’t give them all game time. If Santon can play further up regularly that would definitely help with the left back headache.

      (Quote)

  21. Muck Fe!!!! Apparently De Jong has scored over 9000 goals in 23 appearances for BMG!!!

He must be fooking class!!! Champions League here we come!!! 😎

      (Quote)

  22. @AUSSIE 😆 aye.. noticed that. 😳

I’m hoping we do, we havent yet mate. Jong is a loanee and a replacement for Ba, Best, Ranger, Shola

We also need to replace Cabaye.. so don’t ejaculate too early mate 😉

      (Quote)

  23. Kim – no chance of getting the Grenade now.
Our alleged bid of £10.8M has been ignored.
I would be very surprised if anything happened now.

      (Quote)

  24. Are you sure about that Stuart? Time will tell 😉 however the club has stated that there is no money to spend, I think Pardew mentioned that it would us into the red or something along those lines back at the start of the season.. I reckon all our bids are subject to the Cabaye sale..

      (Quote)

  25. http://mobile.newsnow.co.uk/A/692651596?-11058

Well Pardew is hopeful that we will get player (s) in off the back of the Cabaye sale. Looks like De Jong could be the first.
I certainly won’t write the lad off before he’s even kicked a ball for us. He hasn’t done it at Gbach but he’s a good CF and I’m happy he’s on his way personally.
Would be great if Grenier and Gomis followed him. That would be great business IMO

      (Quote)

  26. BB… 😆 Aye Grenier looks canny, He’s “mostly” looked a decent player when I’ve seen him which is a few times now, seen him have one or 2 poor games too mind, Cabella looks decent too and there’s probably not that much between the 2 although Greneir has a bit more strength about him I reckon….the risk, as always is whether they can do it in another league 😐

      (Quote)

  27. @STUART79

only some believe we don’t need to sell before we buy.

Look at last Summer, Pardew hinted until he was begging for someone to buy Cabaye as we had tapped-up 6 players. Nobody bought Cabaye so we bought nobody. just a cheap loan deal for remy..

its obvious we need to sell first

      (Quote)

  28. BB/Richie – Grenier would be my first choice, then Siem De Jong, then Cabella.
They are all good players but I think of the 3 Cabella is most likely to go missing in the games that aren’t going our way.

      (Quote)

  29. Richie@111-eager to take the credit first, now you’re muddying the waters with excuses. Out with it lad, is he going to be a superstar or not!

      (Quote)

  30. Newkie – “is he going to be a superstar?”
yes but most likely not for us 👿

      (Quote)

  31. Stuart – re the money, you must remember those pesky agents fees we are obliged to pay. Must account for all the missing millions surely

      (Quote)

  32. Surely Pards wouldn’t say we need to replace Cabaye unless he has an idea that someone is lined up though. 😕

      (Quote)

  33. Newkie…I don’t believe I said superstar 😉 he’s going to be a cracking player imo, doesn’t mean he will be in this league though as no one can predict with surety how a player will adapt to another club never mind another league in a different country( quite basic really, didn’t think I’d need to explain that 😉 😆 )… but I’d be canny chuffed if we got him

      (Quote)

  34. BB-Aye probably 😆

Richie-I know mate, I was only pulling your leg and seeing if you’d stick to your guns or not 🙂 I’ve not seen enough of him, heard he’s good on football manager though…

      (Quote)

  35. Dave-aye no great loss though 😀

Kim@121-I don’t think it’s as simple as that, more working out what the best partnership will be. Worrying if that is Remy/De Jong though..

      (Quote)

  36. Morning lads / ladettes,

I think it makes sense to sell Cabaye. A player who is 28 wanted away in the summer and has real ambitions to be in the champs league should be allowed to go providing we get a good buck for him.

Lets face it £20m+ for cabaye is a great deal bearing in mind arsenal only bid £11m in the summer and he has obviously wanted out since the summer.

The only way we can move forward is sell him now and buy a replacement to bed in before the summer.

When you think man u are 1 point ahead of us and spent £37m on mata how can we compete? All these other clubs are falsely bankrolled. We have to be realistic when we look at our ambitions.

I know who id love as a replacement and thats Hotlby. Hes available for £5m and is some player who has done it in Germany. He just needs a run of games. Doubt he will come to us though.

Replacement is needed by otherwise it couldnt be more logical to sell Cabaye now.

      (Quote)

  37. We also should lob out Remy and buy another striker. Unless we buy him on a permanent.

How do we move forward when hes only going to leave in the summer anyway? Get him signed up or get a replacement.

      (Quote)

  38. Newkie… 😉 canny player though but thought he’d end up at bigger and better than us so I’d be pleasantly surprised if we got him…if we’re even interested that is.

      (Quote)

  39. Liam-probably agree with that. With Cabaye in the squad I thought we had an outside chance of making Europe. No question now Everton, Manchester United and the rest will finish above us so no real point chasing it. Try and work out if De Jong is any good and whether either of them will sign permanently. Otherwise we need to get Cisse/Benny firing.

      (Quote)

  40. Richie-well the rags were right on De Jong, and we still seem a little obsessed with France…I just don’t think we will stump up the cash for him or cabella.

      (Quote)

  41. Jake Livermore wouldn’t be a bad signing either IMO. He’s played very well for Hull this season on loan – which I’d expect Bruce to try and make permanent. But I reckon we should try and get him in – reckon he could be bought for £5m or less

      (Quote)

  42. Newkie – Cabella wont come, neither will Grenier.

My worry is we will panic buy for some mediocre player and pretend he was our preferred target all along. Cleverley springs to mind 😕

      (Quote)

  43. I almost hope we go for Siem de Jong now.

With 2 Taylors (unrelated, I know), 2 De Jongs and 2 Ameobis there are fewer names for JFK to remember (mangle).

      (Quote)

  44. Sharpy-Livermore is a decent player but is he any better than our other central midfielders? I think we need a proper attacking midfielder, ideally someone who can also play out wide, but mainly behind the striker.

Liam- I think Cabella would but not Grenier. They are obviously worried about Cabella or the chairman wouldn’t be going into anti-Newcastle overdrive. If we threw coin at him he would come, we could pay the wages but he’d be like cabs seeking a move after 2 years or so. But I don’t think we’ll pay the fee.

If we got Cleverly I would genuinely cry. 😐

      (Quote)

  45. Maybe this 4 that was banded about was only if Cabaye was sold.

I think it was always the intention of the club to sell cabaye. He must be on a fair whack wages wise too.

      (Quote)

  46. Blip 😆

Premandup-Imagine how pissed Benny would be then. Losing his French spot to Menez and then losing his club spot to him 😆 Would have been good but defo wouldn’t have come

      (Quote)

  47. JJ-Well, he is tall and good with his head if that’s what you mean. From what I’ve seen he’s got pretty good control with his feet as well. But as far as a British target man…I’m not sure he’s strong enough. His brother would have been better…

      (Quote)

  48. Newkie – I think we need an attacking midfielder as well mate, but I think a midfield 3 of Anita, Tiote and Livermore would be solid and would allow the attacking players to focus on that rather than expecting Ben Arfa to defend or having Gouffran breaking his neck every game – which will take its toll eventually, as it did with Jonas.

      (Quote)

  49. No you wouldn’t Newkie! I’d leave the country though. There’s so many overated English players – him, Welbeck, Henderson. They’re not International class. No way.

Anyway Cabaye was always going at some point and as I always thought him overated then £20m is a really good price. Replacement? Pardew reckons we’ll get one (or is that need?). De Jong, Grenier, Holtby, Rodwell, Cabella? Doubt we’ll pay the money. After all that would only leave a couple of million profit on Cabaye and Ash won’t like them sums.

Of more concern is tonight’s game. Toon heads in disappointment or determined displays from Benny and probably an Ameobi for Gouffran?
We’ll see. At least Cisse’s not fit or Obertan 🙂

      (Quote)

  50. JJ De Jong is a younger version of Ameobi the lad can score goals and has the physical abilities to play as the targetman and with his back to the goal and supply chances for others . I think it just did not work forhim in Germany because he fell out with the coach at the begining of the season . The lad wont get us 20 odd goals a season but maybe a dozen or so but will provide space and assists for others .I think its a good signing if Pards plays to the lads strengths and not as an out and out goal getter .

      (Quote)

  51. JJ – from what I’ve saw of De Jong he likes to stay pretty central and play off the shoulder of the centre backs.
He doesn’t drift into the wide areas much do by that i suppose he’s a target man.
He has a very good first touch and better understanding of the offside rule than Cisse.
He’s good with both feet and can head the ball too.

He’s a good player mate, but will be very rusty having not played much this season, and the question will be whether he is strong enough for the league. Also, whether we get those attacking midfield players in to create him the chances!.

      (Quote)

  52. LIAM ameobi could turn it on every now and then ,this lad is more consistent when given a proper chance all 13 apperances he has had this season was as a substitute and not once before the 70th minute has he been put on the field . In his first season he had 23 games 16 as a starter 8 goals scored ,not too bad actually when finding your feet in a new league. Not saying he is a world beater but i think a very decent player

      (Quote)

  53. Sharpy-yeah true I know what you mean. Obviously if we had decent funds and could make a strong 20 man squad I would have him. As it is I would like a real attacking mid and then a real winger. That way we can rotate with winger with Goof and put him up front so he has less legwork, and we can see what he can do up there. We can rotate on the other wing as well by giving Sissoko another go back in the middle. As it is both are playing really well where they are and we know they can do jobs there, but once rid of Jonas and Obertan we need some real wingers if Sammy and Fergie are not fancied.

Georgio-swear to god mate. I’d also never live it down with all the Manure glory hunters I know because I tell them how **** he is every time I see him play 😕

      (Quote)

  54. BB@144-to be fair mate he’s played about 3 minutes as a sub every appearance this year. He will be rusty as **** but he isn’t as terrible as those stats make out.
