Newcastle v Leicester – Premier League match preview

Newcastle v Leicester
Newcastle v Leicester
Hello strangers! I trust we are all keeping well? It’s been quite a while since I’ve spoken to you all…

However I see not a lot has changed. Alan Pardew is, against all odds, still in the managerial hotseat, we’re still struggling as a team and we’ve still yet to record a win in the league this season.

United will be aiming to change the last part of that statement this afternoon when newly-promoted Leicester City visit St James’ Park. It’s an interesting one for me personally as I live near Leicester these days and married into a family of which half were born in Leicestershire, so for me today the banter stakes are high.

For Newcastle, the stakes are even higher. Results may have been poor but I cling onto the fact that we’ve salvaged recent draws against Hull and Swansea when we could have hidden and got beat. Again. Although a large part of avoiding defeat has been down to the return of Papiss Cisse who will be hoping to add to his tally of four league goals this season.

Newcastle:

Emmanuel Riviere is doubtful as reported yesterday although the other injury concerns, namely Tim Krul, Daryl Janmaat and Paul Dummett, should be fit to feature. French pair Moussa Sissoko and Remy Cabella returned from international duty with France with no problems while Cheik Tiote and Papiss Cisse survived long-haul international trips unscathed which means that Davide Santon and Siem De Jong remain our only senior first-team absentees.

Leicester City:

Matt Upson and Zoumana Bakayogo are the only injuries that former United caretaker boss Nigel Pearson has to contend with.

Previously…

We haven’t had much of a recent history against the Foxes with our last meetings coming from when we faced each other in the Championship where United secured a 1-0 victory at St James’ Park while only a draw could be mustered against 10-men at the Walkers Stadium.

Historically though we do have the upper hand, especially at home where the 54 games played at St James’ Park have yielded 36 victories for United with Leicester returning home South with victory on just seven occasions.

Overall 108 games have been played to date with Newcastle winning 46, Leicester winning 37 with 25 stalemates thrown in for good measure.

Stats and facts:

The Magpies are the only side yet to score first in a Premier League game this season.

Out of the 17 ever-present Premier League sides in 2014, Newcastle have earned the fewest points (20), scored the fewest goals (21) and conceded the most (49).

Leicester have only found the net once in their three league matches away from home this season.

However they are the second-most efficient scoring team in the Premier League, with 11 of their 62 shots resulting in a goal (18%). Chelsea lead the way with 20 goals from 101 shots (20%).

Final thought…

It’s actually starting to get desperate and we’re almost at the point where we’ve gone beyond a bad start and look to be settling into a battle to get away from the bottom of the table. That will get harder and harder unless we start picking up points and even a win today would only see us potentially move up one place.

But we do need that win and the longer it takes to come the harder it will be to achieve. Haven’t we waited long enough for one now?

Howay the lads!

  1. Eric – that’s the ear ring his wife bought him
but he can’t remember which one 😉

      (Quote)

  2. Kim – we are still in the bottom 3, but still in touch.
    That’s all that matters.
A good run in December and we are laughing 😛

  3. At last we got a win under our belts, onwards and upwards 😉 my internet was down so never got to see any of the game , but it seems I never missed much

  4. Need Liverpoo to win tomorrow
‘Arry says “he aint under no pressure”
A defeat tomorrow and he will start to feel it.

  5. Things might be evening out. That probably should have been a draw but we were also very unlucky not to beat Villa. We didn’t just sit back and defend. Good tactics from Pardew. He allowed us to play and the forgotten man (who remember we tried to sell) got us the winner.

BB what is squidward? I always thought Obertan looked like one of mekon’s from star trek.

      (Quote)

  6. Axel – poy8 😆 Class!!

Funky – likewise mate. I’ve been saying give Oba his chance since pre season. He’s looked decent when he’s featured so far this season – and others selected ahead of him have been gash. Good for him today – an assist at Swansea and goal today will do wonders for his confidence.

Well my only prediction for today was that we wouldn’t keep a clean sheet 😳

      (Quote)

  7. The only bit of quality in that entire match was Obertan’s goal. The rest of it was dross. Spurs away could be a real problem for us, let alone Liverpool at home. Enjoy the points mates because there won’t be many more for a while now. 🙁

      (Quote)

  8. And now the big news! We’ve managed a loan player. Yes, you guessed it mates! It’s Cyril Hardplums coming in from the Colchester Quibblers. More well know for his billiards play and a noted west end lounge lizard, Cyril will add some much needed punch up front. 😯

      (Quote)

  9. Did anyone actually notice Gouffy was on the pitch today? He’s been ruined by the Pardew management style. It’s a good thing we’ve got Hardplums coming in.

      (Quote)

  10. Exciting times ahead with Pardew remaining at the helm mates. I’m sure there’s another point available before Christmas.

  11. N E W C A S T L E

Sorry, just back from chanting it while running around the local park in the nuddy except for a Toon scarf.

    The relief.

Still going to be very hard – need min 15 points Christmas, and will still be relying on De Jong, Aarons and a signing or two from then. But, as well as Burnley and QPR, at least the mackems are sportingly trying to ensure that there might be three teams worse than us 😆

  12. Learnt a lot today
Two things immediately spring to mind.
Saylor is a better footballer than Willo.
The 7-2-1 system we deployed first half is gash

      (Quote)

  13. After the love in for Cisse after the Swansea game it would be easy for me to say something. But I will resist

      (Quote)

  14. Krul had a really good game today. He commanded his area and didn’t just tw@t it to the half way line on every back pass.

      (Quote)

  15. It was tough for Cissé to score when he has Sissoko Obertan and Gouffran behind him, they are runners, but who got the look for making the assist?? Maybe Obertan. As I said, the positive move would be to drop Sissoko who got poor decision making, and Gouffran who brings only in defensive aspect but cant get past his opponent. Well done Obertan, he deserves his run, waiting for Aarons return and AP need to stop act a fool with Cabella and he has to play him in 3man midfield with Tioté and Colback!

      (Quote)

  16. Well, Pards deserves to stay after that. He continues to knock the knockers. 😛

If he keeps us up he’s done magnificently. 😉

Good to see his allegedly his choice signing, Obertan proving to be our best player lately. 😉

Its sad, but I can feel it, the pain and upset cos the toon won!! There’s some on here gutted but they’ll never admit it. 😉

      (Quote)

  17. Troy, behave, he was trying to offload Obatoon preseason but no takers. But the lad has played well last few outings to be fair.

      (Quote)

  18. Also reached the conclusion Gouffran has pictures of Pardew in a compromising position. There is no other reason he can keep getting a game

      (Quote)

  19. Troy @246: I watched Pardew’s post match interview and he showed a lot of humility which was nice to see. I think everybody on here want Newcastle to win. I have supported NUFC though thick and thin for 40 years and if Pardew gets us playing well I will be happy and won’t begrudge him success.

I really do think he has had to eat a bit of humble pie recently and he is acting better for it. Some of his decisions like getting rid of MBiwa and Ben Arfa baffle me, and as Kimtoon said he wanted rid of Obertan as well. F@ck it though, if we play decent attacking football and win I am willing to put up with his gibberish.

If the Mackems lose 8-0, what more can you want 🙂

      (Quote)

  20. Sad, I know, but having seen the 19 shots we had today, I checked Premier league stats – season to date, including today’s games, we’re 8th in terms of shots per game (so we are creating chances), but as low as our league position suggests in terms of % shots on target and goals : shots ratio. It isn’t even that it’s a lot of high and hopeful shots from way lit, it’s just very poor finishing, from decent positions. That and the defence has been a shambles – 64% of goals conceded from the space between defensive MF and centre backs.

Suggests – changes to middle of midfield. Maybe Saylor’s propensity to charge the ball is needed?

      (Quote)

  21. There were actually signs of life in what seemed to be the NUFC corpse today. The other thing was that Southampton might actually be really good, rather than us being really bad. You don’t beat teams 8-0 if you are not good.

      (Quote)

  22. Troy – Pardew seems to be removing his head from his **** and has made the changes to the team necassary.
You’ve told us all that his squad isn’t good enough, yet he’s brought back players like Cisse, Obertan and Sammy and they’ve all done a good job for him when allowed.
That has been my biggest problem with Pardew in 2014. He hadnt been willing to make the changes (I know Cisse was injured – but there were other options throughout).
But finally he has parked his ego and made the changes.
Pardew talks alot of guff, but actually the most accurate thing he’s said was to acknowledge the strength of his squad – he just had to start using it!!.

      (Quote)

  23. GTE@251, you’ll have Troy on your back as according to the font of all knowledge we don’t have players who can create anything, relegation fodder apparently. 😉

      (Quote)

  24. Yes Saylor had an ok game today.
Made some crucial blocks and headers and puts his body on the line.
But the defence was still woeful tbh
Having said that tho, how can you knock a clean sheet and 3 points.
    It’s a funny old game 😛

      (Quote)

  25. Sharpy – actually the most accurate thing Percy said was “we need to win more games in this premier league, there’s no getting away from that”
    😀

      (Quote)

  26. Kim – got to start taking more of those chances, or Tror will be right, of for the wrong reasons. A win might just ease the shot-taking up a little.

Sissoko, Colback, Tiote is still too static, easy to pass round, for me – I’d be happier to remove one of this for a bit more pace, from Cabella, Aarons off the bench when fit.

      (Quote)

  27. GTE, Rolando will make a huge difference when he’s back, just hope Percy doesn’t have him defending more than attacking on that wing.

      (Quote)

  28. Percy has confused relief of the owner at not having to sack him, with love of the club.
Shame he couldn’t mention the great support of the fans.
we like to win too, in case he hadn’t noticed.

      (Quote)

  29. GTE – if I were Pardew, I’d have Colback, Tiote and Sissoko watch tapes of how Jonas, Tiote and Cabaye operated as a 3 man midfield. I know Cabaye was a better midfielder, but those 3 worked great together, and for me, there’s no reason why these 3 can’t do the same.
That would then allow a front 3 of Cabella, Aaron’s and Cisse for example – however, with De Jong still to come back and Oba playing well at the moment, there are other options. I’d also expect Rivi, Chucky, Perez and Armstrong to be putting a challenge in.

      (Quote)

  30. Well I’ve heard it all now. Apparently it’s Pardew who is eating humble pie. 😛

I don’t think so. It’s half of yous on here. 😆

      (Quote)

  31. Troy – I hope he’s saved you a big slice mate. Despite a number of injuries to key players, we won which proves this squad IS good enough – IF Pardew puts his faith in them.

      (Quote)

  32. Troy, I heard he sings that tune to himself in front of the mirror, you know the one, it’s the same one you sing 😉

Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
when you’re perfect in every way.
I can’t wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day.
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
but I’m doing the best that I can.
I used to have a girlfriend
    but she just couldn’t compete
with all of these love starved women
who keep clamoring at my feet.
Well I prob’ly could find me another
but I guess they’re all in awe of me.
Who cares, I never get lonesome
cause I treasure my own company.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
when you’re perfect in every way,
I can’t wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
but were doing the best that we can.
I guess you could say I’m a loner,
a cowboy outlaw tough and proud.
I could have lots of friends if I want to
but then I wouldn’t stand out from the crowd.
Some folks say that I’m egotistical.
Hell, I don’t even know what that means.
I guess it has something to do with the way that I
fill out my skin tight blue jeans.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
when you’re perfect in every way,
I can’t wait to look in the mirror
cause I get better looking each day
To know me is to love me
I must be a hell of a man.
Oh Lord it’s hard to be humble
We’re doing the best that we can.

  33. Badly needed win today takes a bit off the pressure.
Off to the log cabin for a week and fishing for a few hours most days catching brown trout and rainbow trout using tiger worm and powerbait.
I would ask Troy along but he seems to be fishing already , trying to get a bite using humble pie as bait.

      (Quote)

  34. Kim I’m touched. 😳 😆

It’s true though. There’s quite a few on here who were praying for a defeat. Just they could blame Pards instead of putting NUFC first. 😉

I know who they are, they know who they are and their mothers know who they are, cos nobody knows their child as good as their mothers. 😉

    Mrs Sykes
    Mrs Boots
    Mrs Sharp
    Mrs Georgio
    Mrs GTE

There’s a few more, but I could get to speak to the other mothers as they were busy on Pink Lane. 😛

Fortunately, the ones I got to speak to listed above were at the soup kitchen. 😆

      (Quote)

  35. Troy – I never want NUFC to get beat. I certainly haven’t posted that I wanted us to get beat today in a hope that Pardew gets sacked.
The fact is my posts re Pardew was about him changing the formation/players starting – his reluctance to do that has been my case to say his time was up. But there again, had we got beat today – YOU SAID HIS TIME WAS UP!!.

But once again you go too far with your ‘banter’.

      (Quote)

  36. Recall Lascelles, sign Carroll at least on loan, sell Gouffran, Anita, Willo maybe even Sissoko(if Tioté stays), promote Abeid, Bigi as 1st CM backups, and give the flanks to Obertan Ayoze, Sammy and Aarons. If Coloccini is about to leave, Id be ok for Taylor/Lascelles togheter if only Taylor can keep a consistency without getting injured or without a silly mistake or red Card.

For Spurs Game, id like to see this:
    ————————–Krul————————–
    -Janmaat—–Tayls——-Colo——–Dummett
    ————————-Tioté————————–
    —————Colback——Cabella—————
    —-Obertan——————————Sammy—
    ————————-Cissé————————–

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy17: I agree totally. I never want us to lose and I don’t think I said I did either. I cant be bothered to check though as I know it is one of Troy’s little mind games.

I am happy today. I think we deserved the win and Pardew did well and most of what he did paid off.

What cannot be denied though is that we have been terrible all year:

    1. We have picked up the least points of any surviving premier league club.

    2. The player that Pardew (Obertan) wanted to let go, he has now turned to in desperation and it has worked, for once.

    3. Three players that would enhance the squad have been loaned because of Pardew’s petulance.

There are actually some signs that Pardew is now listening, which I can’t quite believe and long may it continue. His abbreviated press conference today was as welcome as it was humble. He will probably revert back to type, but I will take it for now as the last thing I want is for us to get relegated.

Troy crowing about one win as if it proves him right is just laughable.

      (Quote)

  38. Troy: I went back and looked at what I said because you have a tendency to make stuff up. This is what I said @9:

“Please, not another draw 🙂 If we win there is hope, if we lose we can all agree Pardew is done. A draw will just drag this agony out.”

I don’t see that as saying I wanted us to lose. I want rid of Pardew because I find him mostly arrogant and irritating, but I don’t want us to lose. I am not sure if my two wishes will square though 🙂

      (Quote)

  39. Also Troy: you make assumptions about people. You disparage people, saying they are on the dole or are moochers (I can look it up if you want). You know nothing about me and yet you insinuate people who disagree with you are on the dole. I have a degree in psychology and a masters degree in financial planning. I have lived in four countries and probably make more from investments alone than you make from your job (I know that is an assumption, but I am fairly sure I am correct). That is not bragging, it is a reaction to the petty insults you make.

      (Quote)

  40. Troy said @275:

“Fortunately, the ones I got to speak to listed above were at the soup kitchen.”

I didn’t have to look that far it was at 275 🙂

      (Quote)

  41. I am reading we will recall Lacelles in Jan and put Saylor to Forest in his place? Why? Lacelles is our player, we’re doing Forest the favour so why bend over for them? They aren’t even playing Lacelles anyway. Ridiculous if true as we’re still left with the same lack of numbers at centre back.

      (Quote)

  42. I wasn’t doing a Harry Enfield bit and saying to Troy “Excuse me sport, I appear to be considerably reecher that yow. How many beesnesses have yow started in the West Meedlands?”. Rather, I was pointing out that Troy often makes the misguided assumption that people are scroungers and layabouts as he did @275.

      (Quote)

  43. Well I’ve heard it all now 😛

Eric’ BSc, OBE MBE CBE VC , which other awards have you won ? 😆

I’m on very dodgy ground here. Eric makes more money than Mile Ashley by the sounds of it. There must be some error, I’ve just checked the rich list and I can’t find you. 😆

Why don’t you buy NUFC? Go on I dare you. 😆

      (Quote)

  44. Sharpy

Howay fella, I thought you would have known me by now. I never said you said you wanted the toon to lose. Nobody would ever write that. It’s just my belief that many think it, just so you could have another go at Pardew.

Regarding the soup kitchen and mothers working on Pink Lane, I haven’t really seen your mother or anyone else’s. I don’t really know them. I wasn’t at the soup kitchen nor did I visit Pink Lane.

I have just driven past those places had an hour ago and seen Eric looking for me holding a bunch of qualifications and handing out money at the soup kitchen. 😛

    FTSOTB 😆

Eric’s rant ranks up there with Elizabeth Violet’s aka Aussie. 😆

      (Quote)

  45. I’ve actually framed Eric’s post @280 and hung it on my wall. 😛

That has to go down as the best bite ever. 😛

    Comedy gold! 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

I will leave it at that before I get accused of milking it and some people blaming me for bullying. How you bully someone on the world rich list and more qualified than Carol Votderman is beyond me. 😆

      (Quote)

  46. God eric you never shut the fck up about troy .have you got a brain reel him him now troy he has been stuck on that hook for a while now 😆

      (Quote)

  47. And Batty, if someone insults you, calls me a waster, and I answer back, I don’t get your point about me dwelling? You don’t seem like the type of man who would take insults lightly.

Now, what we should all do is watch a rerun of the Mackems game. That WAS comedy gold.

      (Quote)

  48. And Batty: so many people on here give the great TroyStav a free pass on what he says. I really don’t get why?

      (Quote)

  49. your biting like a pike on a carp ,and yes if i get abuse i give it back ,if i saw troy i would buy him a pint or 6 and drink orange juice myself 😉

      (Quote)

  50. eric ive had my fair share of insults in the past even people wishing me dead not on this blog ,it was on wanky tickets which i gave 50 quid to keep it going while he had his begging bowl out ,but as you can see iam still here 😉

      (Quote)

  51. Batty

It has to go down as my biggest catch yet. 😛

For someone to reveal they make more money in a single deal than Mike Ashley earns in a lifetime and has more qualifications than Stephen Hawkings. It just doesn’t get any better than that. I only wish I could get a photo holding up Eric as my prize catch. 😆

      (Quote)

  52. Troy he is starting to look like a carp which a pike has been taking massive bite out of and ive seen a few of them 😉

      (Quote)

  53. Troystav: you have caught nowt mate. In your own deluded mind you might think you have. You decided to insult people and one of them (me) said something back to you to refute what you said. I have no idea how that is a catch? I think you might be beyond help
