Game On! Newcastle United v Aston Villa

Mags v Villains

United take on Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
John Carver expects an Aston Villa team with a “new lease of life” to provide a tough test in todays Premier League encounter at St James’ Park.
So another tough test after we were thumped 5-0 by defending champions Manchester City last time out in a game that marked the low point in a run of just one win in their last eight.
A home match against relegation-threatened Villa – who have not won in the league since December 7 – presents a chance for Newcastle to end that dismal streak and repay the fans for last weeks diabolical performance.
Talking ahead of the game JC was quick to point out that “I’ve seen the difference in Villa straight away under Tim,” Carver said. “They are going front to back a bit quicker.”Villa have got a new lease of life, more energy, and it won’t be an easy game for us.”
Jonas Gutierrez is in the senior squad for the first time since recovering from testicular cancer.
And while Jonas could be in line for an emotional return, and give the fans a bit of a boost, United still have a host of injury issues to deal with.
Remy Cabella is a doubt with a knee problem that forced him to miss the drubbing at the Etihad Stadium,( which after revealing that he would miss the game on social media on friday it would seem he isn’t a doubt anymore) while Jack Colback is suspended. Teenage winger Rolando Aarons (hamstring) is still out and is joined on the sidelines by Siem de Jong (lung), Paul Dummett (knee), Robert Elliot (thigh), Steven Taylor (Achilles) and Cheick Tiote (knee).

Newcastle Krul; Janmaat, Coloccini (c), Williamson, Haïdara; Obertan, Sissoko, Abeid, Ameobi; Rivière, Cissé.

Subs Woodman, R.Taylor, Anita, Gouffran, Gutierrez, Armstrong, Perez.

Villa Guzan, Hutton, Okore, Clark, Lowton, Sinclair, Delph, Cleverley, Westwood, Agbonlahor, Benteke.

Subs Given, Bacuna, Weimann, Sanchez, Gil, N’Zogbia, Grealish.

  1. Kimtoon: with all that talent they are not that good to watch. They should never have gotten rid of Ancelotti. We should have their problems though 🙂

  2. Is Ashley ready to hire a decent head coach (I still choke when I call it that) in the summer? I’m not convinced. We play dross football and get 1-0 wins against extremely poor sides at home. What will it take to get the fat lump to spend some money on decent players? I have no idea.

  3. Just listening to the Chelsea fans cheering when the cup got lifted, they aren’t making much noise otherwise, it that was the toon the place would be rocking . Makes you wonder if too much success dulls the senses .

  4. Despite vastly increased revenues, as I commented on Friday there is no sign if increased investment in the club. We invest like a bottom place team. We don’t hang on to our decent players. The plan is for Ashley to make huge amounts of cash. Nothing more.

  5. Unless, like all the best comedy villains, he really is just a tight wad, who @looks after the pennies’, it doesn’t make sense for him to bleed the club for profit, G”2 – paying the loan back, yes, because that increases the real value of his asset, but a) you hav to pay tax on profits, b) even £50m is peanuts for Ashley wither from the pov of SD profits or his personal wealth. My bet is that the accounts will show a subsantial paymentt back on the loan and use accounting cheats to transfer some of the profits to next year without having to pay tax (a contingency, or capital fund for training facility ‘investment’ for example. The open question is whether, having done that he plans to allow the club to spend the rest on the playing side – although this summer that’d be more like £10-£20m left over (plus cash up front from any sales)

  6. We need to find a cure for Ashley. Are there any pesticides that work on parasites as big as Mike?

      (Quote)

  7. That sounds horrible GTE mate, but probably a very good analysis of what Ashley might do. I will continue my research on large parasite pesticides.

      (Quote)

  8. We need to get rid of Riviere in the summer. He is hopeless. Don’t pretend he is a good striker Mike get rid of. And Ferrerya as well. Stop mucking about pretending you know what you’re doing Ashley. Sack yourself from the board.

      (Quote)

  9. IT impacts the coach debate as well – unless AShkley suprises us and releases the whole maybe £50 for new players, plus any cash raised from sales, we’ll have perhaps a £20m budget this summer and be competing with 19 other clubs most likely operating on budgets of £50-100m, more for the biggest guys. Now, a lot of that money will be wasted but it does suggst that we need to spend out little pot very very well, and secondly, which top-notch emerging coach is going to come to us to take on that challenge?

      (Quote)

  10. We want proper investment in the club Mike. We want football ambition. Otherwise I may have to spray you with something nasty. Parasite out!!!

      (Quote)

  11. There are some decent managers that have worked within fixed budgets GTE mate but Ashley is a notorious lying fop as well. I would never trust him even with a signed contract in my hand. The good managers will go elsewhere because they have the common sense to avoid Ashley.

      (Quote)

  12. Best hope remains a European coach used to working on low budgets and changing the team each year. Unless Carver proves us all wrong as well 😀

      (Quote)

  13. Get rid of Riviere and Ferrerya. Sell Saylor if he finally stays fit for 5 minutes. Get rid of Obertan. Jonas will retire. Santon won’t be coming back. Mbiwa is gone. Colo is nearing the end. We have gaping holes all over the squad. Investment will be crucial this summer. Our next 6 games will highlight the problems. If we get more than 4 points out of that lot I will be shocked.

      (Quote)

  14. GTE: arn’t these results backward looking through June? He has frozen or reduced wages and therefore expediture. The whole extra 30 mil will go straight to profit, plus we were already about 10 mil in the black the year before. He can do what you say and still have money for players. Remember, some contracts are up in June and he has this years TV money to play with. Even if he pays himself a fair chunk back there is still plenty left if he wants to use it to advance NUFC fortunes and not his own.

      (Quote)

  15. Carver will be under huge pressure by the end of the season. We will finish with 45 points or less. Truly sad sack again. Whether It will bother Mike enough to do something is an open question We’ll be watching for the 2015 revenue statement as well Mike.

      (Quote)

  16. Went into the box office to get the Laddies payment changed to a student rate and in the time I was at the counter a number were cancelling for next season.
I am giving it another go. Really enjoy the match day experience.

      (Quote)

  17. It’s very likely there will be even more profit from this year. Wage spending down. All major revenues up drastically. I wouldn’t be surprised if the profits for this year are around 40M pounds or more. And no significant spending on decent strikers or CB’s. We only buy midfielders. We’re in love with the midfield or Ashley is rather.

      (Quote)

  18. You enjoy watching our pathetic excuse for a team Toby? Stay home and watch it on the telly but don’t put money in Ashley’s pockets or we’ll never get rid.

      (Quote)

  19. If Ashley averages 40M a year in profits from 2014 to 2016 that would be 120M pounds. Pay of the whole debt, sell the club and ****** off Ashley.

      (Quote)

  20. The money is pouring in now but we still have a pathetic team thanks to Ashley. Poor at the back, poor at the front (except for Cisse this season). Why do we only buy midfielders? I realize we brought in Mbiwa but how much of a chance did he get? And we’re still stuck with made of glass Saylor and hopeless Willo. What is the point of this Mike?

      (Quote)

  21. I cant be bothered to do a full analysis but I bet we broke about even on player/manager trading. They don’t tell us what they spent but I bet with the sale of Debuchy, MBiwa, Santon and Pards’ comp that we are close to even. Put your hand in your pocket you fat **** and get us a centre half and centre forward.

      (Quote)

  22. G2 – It begs the question that I have asked for the last 3 years; what’s the point in a football club making a profit if it doesn’t invest in the football team?

      (Quote)

  23. We were diabolical out there yesterday with the exception of Cisse and Janmaat. Obertan couldn’t cross a ball or beat a man to save his life. So poor. We’ve more or less given away far better wingers than him.

      (Quote)

  24. Aye Stuart. Spot on. I’ve been asking the same thing. Football clubs exist to win trophies for their supporters. Not make huge profits for their owners who refuse to reinvest in any responsible way.

      (Quote)

  25. Why is Obertan still with us? Because absolutely no other club would take his contract on. He is hopeless.

      (Quote)

  26. One decent league finish in 7 Prem years. One. And that was mainly due to some miracle goals by both Ba and Cisse. Where are we now? No further ahead. Money pouring in but nothing positive being done with it to make us competitive. Other clubs compete hard for cups. What do we do? I don’t need to bother telling you surely.

      (Quote)

  27. All Ashley does is replace one gobsh*te with another. Llambias replaced by Kinnear, replaced by Charnley. And where has it gotten us? Enough from me. Enjoying all your comments mates.

      (Quote)

  28. Just looked up John Carver’s winning percentage. Overall 29.2. With us 22.2. I think that speaks for itself.

      (Quote)

  29. G2: I dislike the idea of Carver as manager as much as anyone else but a 30% winning record is 11 wins, times 3 that is 33 points. Add in a sprinkling of draws and that would keep us up. I doubt Parver would keep up a 30% win rate in the PL though.

      (Quote)

  30. I just find this unreal Carver didn’t know after four years at toon that young shola could take free kicks or corners, had be told he could by Clark youth team coach ffs what’s Gannin on

      (Quote)

  31. Icedog@414, aye, then the club post it on their official web site.
Ashley must be pissing himself, reading what the docile geordies get up to….

A bunch of knackers from top to bottom… good job the Frenchies cannot understand owt…

      (Quote)

  32. What’s gannin on icedog mate is we’re run by a group of idiots. It’s beyond pathetic. Not knowing what your own players can do? And then he admits it? His winning percentage speaks for itself. He is not a leader. He never will be. We’ll struggle badly until he’s replaced by a better man.

      (Quote)

  33. MM: that is unbelievable. We always thought they were incompetent but the truth comes out of Catver’s own mouth. He really must just have been arranging the traffic cones all those years.

Some clubs realise the importance of corners. For example, van Persie takes some for Man U. He is one of the best strikers of the ball in the PL and would definitely be useful on rebounds and punch outs but Man U feel he is a bigger threat taking the corners.

      (Quote)

  34. Carver couldn’t run Toronto FC in a poor league. I watched his team get worse and worse until he stepped away. It will happen with Newcastle as well. Three players out of 11 on the pitch had decent games yesterday. Cisse, Janmaat, and Krul. That’s it. Other than that we were dross.

      (Quote)

  35. MM sorry didn’t see your comment, only time you would get the beers in is if the bar was empty lol, carver should hide his face in shame doesn’t say much for his coaching does it

      (Quote)

  36. Now now lads and lasses…we shouldn’t get too negative or the happy clappers will desert us…

That Carver quote about Sammi Ameobi really has bugged me…what a daft thing to admit to…. No wonder the players are just going through the motions….they are not scared of Carver…an easy touch…
I wonder what that rocket scientist Mr Charnley makes of this diamond quote…?

      (Quote)

  37. Icedog@419, no problems mate, I got there before you with the Carver quote.

I did get the beers in once mate…. 😉 😆 …it took me ages to get over it though 🙂

  38. G2 well for a change I thought Colo was a bit better than he has been, that says a lot like

      (Quote)

  39. MM @ 411 if you hadn’t have put that link up I would have thought you were having a laugh.
I find it unbelievable that in 4 yrs they haven’t thought of trying different players at set pieces, is that not what they’re supposed to try out at training.
IMO he has made himself look like a right knob, but then I guess that is just what you would expect at our micky mouse club

      (Quote)

  40. G2@421 😆 😆 😆 well at least you’ve rustled up some interest in the mean time mate….

I’m back on and Icedog has woken up from his afternoon nap… Eric is always hovering close bye anyway hoping to put a verbal half-nelson on Troy and tie him up in knots 😆 😆 but he has Troy running scared for some reason…

    ………

Actually it’s snide little comments like that that drive people like myself off

      (Quote)

  42. Big Dave@424, rumour has it that Carver had said to Stoney “hey Stoney lad, didn’t we get rid of Shola a while back ? … weymanyernaa like, he’s looking reet skinny now like”… Stoney said weyman JC that’s not Shola, that’s Sammy, he puts in a mean corner… the rest is legend…
    In Charnley we trust….

  43. MM @422 aye its bad getting two pints in and only get to drink one, there’ssome greedy gits aboot 😉

      (Quote)

  44. MDS@426, my apologies for that mate, I wasn’t meaning you in particular.

I hope you’re not THAT sensitive to take it to heart.

    Apologies again…

      (Quote)

  45. Munich believe me when I say that I’m as far from sensitive as is possible. But the childish little insults on here do my head in

      (Quote)

  46. MDS@431 ok mate, I don’t want to detract from your enjoyment on the blog, so will try to refrain from using the term “happy clappers” in the future.

What do you make of John Carvers utterances regarding Sammi’s corner taking capabilities ?

      (Quote)

  47. MM stop the **** stirring with me and Troysta 🙂 I have been watching football since 6am (Liverpool were on that erly here) and now Real Madrid are on. Checked in from time to time on the laptop just in case you came on 😉

      (Quote)

  48. Thank you, MM.

Same take as everyone else; how in the world don’t the coaches know all of the capabilities of their players? Especially ones that have been here awhile.

      (Quote)

  49. Wasn’t it under Pardew where we went through that phase where there was always confusion over who would take penalties? That’s sort of unpreparedness drives me crazy.

  50. Does anyone follow the True Geordie on u-tube it real good crack the lad says what he thinks, has a great photo on at the minute of Carver dressed as Braveheart

      (Quote)

  51. MDS @ 431 again just out of interest does it also **** you off when the daily snide comments are thrown at the so called neggers.?
As for the happy clappers and the neggers I don’t really like being brushed with the term negger but sometimes I and others will use it to state which camp they/we are in, same as happy clappers, I am all for everyone getting on and working round each other but I really don’t see them terms being insulting as there is a lot more insulting stuff that goes on.

      (Quote)

  52. Big D @442, thanks for that mate, but I’ll wind it in a bit. Once I see our club making an effort and not ripping the pinkle out of the supporters then I’ll be right back on side and oozing with positivity. Until then I’m stuck in the neggers camp I’m afraid. In fact I **** myself off at times…wish I didn’t care so much about my team 😆

      (Quote)

  53. Ice@439 😆 Just reading a villa forum to see what they said about yesterday and one of the posters said JC looks like the drag act in Benidorm 😆

  54. Kimtoon, that’s what a west end diet does for you. Bimby’s fish and chips with Dickmans pies as main course washed down with a flagan of brown ale… 🙂
