FLIP FLOPS OR TURNING POINT ?

flipflops
After the shambolic display at Everton there needed to be a vast improvement against Arsenal. Newcastle were rightly slated by fans and pundits alike, given Evertons form of late and mid week outing in Europe it wasn’t out the way to have expected a point or 3 from that game. Newcastle being Newcastle don’t do things the easy way though and simply didn’t show up on the day with Gary Lineker suggesting they already had their flip flops on for the summer.
It’s pretty safe to assume the majority of us were expecting a proper mauling at the hands of an in form Arsenal and some fans even said they wouldn’t watch such was the worry it could be a very embarrassing scoreline. Well what a pleasant surprise we got, ok we lost and we did fall apart for the two goals in that crazy 5 minute spell but second half we were outstanding and truth be told no one could of complained if we’d gotten a point from the game.
I’m still baffled how we can go from being utterly useless as a unit to completely united in one game but this isn’t the only time this has happened, we also saw it under Pardew. The funny thing is that under Pardew we would be great first half and awful the second, leading many to wonder what got said at halftime!
John Carver came out after the match to say how proud of the players he was and rightly so. What ever he said at half time, and he alluded to comments about pride in the shirt, it certainly worked. The difference was simply amazing, especially considering this was a patched up team.
So is this a turning point, do we actually have a team capable of attacking and creating chances and goals that get bums off seats? Or was this just a flash in the pan performance bought about by the fear of yet more ridicule from the fans and pundits? Is there actually some pride and sense of something to play for or are we deluding ourselves?
St James Park was rocking second half on saturday and I for one haven’t heard such noise for a long time. This cannot of gone unnoticed by our owner who was watching in the stands. I wonder how much he wants that atmosphere every home game? Just a couple of astute transfers of real quality in the summer and no more daft loans and sales and we could yet have a team to get back that wonderful atmosphere on a regular basis and maybe even turn St James Park back into a fortress again.

  1. Kim thanks again for another well wrote thread, you really are taking to this writing game.
I agree with everything you say, IMO I can’t remember seeing a fightback in an awfully longtime, it reminded me of the 4-4 fight back with Arsenal a few yrs back. But as I said during the game I just can’t understand how they cant show that fight and determination more than just once in a blue moon.

  2. Good one, Kim.

Not quite Flip Flops on but I think it’s just a lack of quality. Where will the goals come from? Without Cisse we will struggle and we just won’t keep clean sheets either with midfielders as full backs and a full back at centre half.

I suppose its not a great recipe… Not much more Carver can do I suppose.

      (Quote)

  3. Well done Kim,think we need more than a couple of signings like we need this effort every game but I fear we wont one.swallow doesn’t make a summer so they say let’s see what the scum game brings they should be up for a game like that,I do worry who will score the goals,a couple from Colback would be nice 😀

      (Quote)

  4. I see Rangers have said the five players loaned to them did not even have a medical four couldn’t play because they were injured, jabba just treat people like loafs of bread this won’t help trying to sign new players seeing the way they “could”be treated

      (Quote)

  5. Thanks lads. I was really heartened by our second half showing and rightly or wrongly it’s given me some hope for he Derby game. As Ice says a couple from Colback would be nice 😉 If Sammi can get some quality crosses into Perez I do think he’ll grab a goal. We have to get in their faces and give them no time on the ball like we did second half on Saturday. **** will be desperate for his first win and they will be desperate for the points never mind the pride. They have to come at us and we should take advantage of their desperate status, I’m fed up with us helping them avoid the drop with a gift of 6 points every season.

      (Quote)

  6. Would any one play Arma ?, think he would relish the chance to put a couple past the unwashed. Second half maybe but early enough to have an impact.

      (Quote)

  7. Kimtoon: Contrary to what Troysta and Troy Junior think, there is nothing I would like better than to see Mr. Ugly succeed, but he has only shown glimpses of good football. It could be the injuries, it could be him shaking off the shackles of Pardew? What we saw was a good half of football following a terrible game against Everton. I am not getting my hopes up – yet.

      (Quote)

  8. Eric, well lets see how the derby goes, if they don’t turn up for that then I give up tbh.

      (Quote)

  9. Kim – another good article missus, and you pick up on a good point that it was role reserve with Pardew (first half/second half performances).
I don’t think we were awful in the 1st half, there was just no urgency – and 2 horrible moments of defending by Willo, a bloke his size being out muscled .
But 2nd half was a different story, and what was pleasing for me was to see players getting into the box when we were on the attack. Cabella looks a real attacking threat and I’m hopeful we will see a lot more of that next season now he’s had this season to bed in.

I fear it may have been a flash in the pan though Kim. I also fear that Ashley would have looked at that 2nd half and thought ‘whatever Carver said has worked!. He really is a good coach!!.’ Also, he may well have looked at it and thought ‘if a patched up team can get the crowd rocking this much, how much investment is actually needed?!’.

      (Quote)

  10. Ice I guess the way Jabba was looking at it, it would make him look good that he was helping rangers.
As for signing new players I think its more to do with everything at the club that will make signing players harder

      (Quote)

  11. Sharpy @9: I am looking forward to seeing more of Cabella this season, next 8 games. I think we have a game changer and he might be able to get us going before being sold for 30 mil to Arsenal.

      (Quote)

  12. It’s nice to see Cabella get given quality game time and I’m sure he’ll get better the more he plays. One thing I’m certain of is that if Pards was still here he’d hardly get a look in.

      (Quote)

  13. Turning point for me:
-Get rid of Gouffran Obertan Anita Tioté
-Eventually give Riviere another season to prove himself
-Build team around Janmaat, Colback, Ayoze, Sissoko, Cabella, Dummett, Aarons, Sammy.
-New deals for Sammy, Jonas, Raylor, the last 2 are regular players if not starters, both in my estimation are CM and replace Anita and Tioté.
    -A fit de Jong
    -Coloccini tried as Defensive Midfielder
    -Lascelles starter CB, with Dummett
-Dummett 1st choice LB, or Haidara LB if Dummett goes CB
-Sammy to be used also as Striker or Right Winger.
-Aarons to be used also as Right Winger
-Ayoze to used also as left winger
-de Jong as striker, CM in a 3 man midfield or his n10 ten role.

Without potential new players we would be with:

    ————————-Krul———————–
    -Janmaat-Lascelles-Coloccini-Dummett-
    ———————–Colback——————-
    —————–Cabella—-Jonas—————
    —–Sissoko————————–Ayoze—-
    ————————-Cissé———————

    Bench:Darlow,Taylor,Haidara,Raylor, Aarons, de Jong, Sammy

      (Quote)

  14. Or de Jong for Jonas if we assume de Jong if fully fit, Jonas could have decent impact from the bench as we’ve seen.

      (Quote)

  15. And then the turning point would be appointing a manager in that list: Tony Pulis, David Moyes, Bilic, Galtier, Howe, McClaren, Tuchel.

      (Quote)

  16. Kim – I’d consider going 4-2-3-1 against the scum:

    ———————– Krul ———————
    Raylor – Janmaat – Willo – Colback
    ———— Sissoko — Abied ————
    — Cabella —— Perez —— Sammy
    ——————- Armstrong —————

      (Quote)

  17. Cholo: Coloccini as a defensive midfielder might work. We need another bloody centre back first though man. Colo is much better on the ball than Tiote and it would allow Colback and Sissoko to push up. YOU KNOW, LIKE INTO THE OPPOSITION HALF – unlike when Pardew would have us defend for the first 65 minutes.

Pards has Palace above us now though. My view of his managerial skills may be tainted because I thought he was such a gobshite. I doubt it though, because he will instill his tactics into Palace and get them relegated next year. Somebody on here said it takes a while for Pardew’s utter shiteness and defensive mindset to get through to the players so we might have to wait a year.

      (Quote)

  18. Kimtoon- Honestly, for Arma, if we are about to give him a chance, then Its all I want to see, think he got potential and can be something big. Thats why we should make the best move possible upfront, in my opinion Cissé Ayoze are good enough, then de Jong is an option more as second striker, then Armstrong is a natural Cissé replacement, Sammy is also an option in my opinion. Just got get rid of Gouffran and Riviere. So if we are about to bring a quality striker, would love to see Arma get a good loan in League 1 or Championship or Scotland and returns even better

      (Quote)

  19. Eric Sykes- If we need another Center back, this guy hopefully has to be Lubo Satka. I always thought Coloccini as DM with two defenders, lets say Lascelles and Dummett should make us a much much better team. Coloccini is not done, he should or play with a tall athletic and pacey CB (Taylor when fit, hopefully Lascelles), or he should go to midfield. Like Jonas should’ve change role for a while and play CM position after 2012.

      (Quote)

  20. Eric – I’d like to see more from Cabella this season too mate, I just meant I think he’ll be fully up to speed by next season. I really hope he proves his doubters wrong, and he’s started already this season since Carver has put faith in him.

Cholo – I like what you’re suggesting mate, but I want to see us go further than that players wise. Particularly at CB and CF, as Colo has been poor this season and age is catching up with him I think, plus Saylor on the bench will have his injuries. CF wise, I like Cisse but we need another goal scorer – though I would still like to see Riviere turn his fortunes round.

      (Quote)

  21. For Sunderland game id go for this:

    ——————–Krul—————-
    -Satka-Janmaat–Willo–Raylor–
    ————-Abeid-Colback———
    —————–Sissoko————-
    —-Cabella—————-Ameobi-
    ——————Ayoze—————-

      (Quote)

  22. Colback at full back was a disaster. Jonas would be a better option.
Gouffran and Anita are just too bad to be true.
Positives Janmaat, Perez and Cabella showing a willingness to try and make things happen. Cabella had a chance of coming good. A lack of a central striker continues to hurt us.
We have a good run of fixtures coming up but our lack of fire power will be an issue

      (Quote)

  23. Cholo @28: hopefully Haidara will be back and we wont have to rely on a “rookie” at right back. I am not sure if the cauldron of a derby will be the best introduction for Satka. Could be the makings of him though? The rest of the team looks like a very good choice.

      (Quote)

  24. Stuart- In my reflexion, I did not bring any eventual incoming players, but you right as CB and CF we need one addition. As CB, Id go for Kara Mbodji, playing for Senegal, this guy is real quality in my opinion, then we’ll have him Lascelles Dummett and Colo for 2 spots. And this Kara can also play as DM, so he covers 2 roles, which is good. Upfront, I definately want someone, but this guy has to a big man, dont want a small pacey guy similar to Ayoze or Arma to come and hurt their progression, and Cissé is already our old fashion n9 who only knows how to score. But in my opinion, we must try to put Sammy upfront, I remember Adebayor before he became a big player, he was similar to Sammy, long legs, skills but a look lazy and just needed confidence and developpement. From what Ive seen, Sammy scored as striker in 2 cup games few years ago, and finished the Spurs game upfront when we won there, and he made it really hard for Spurs that day, he can bring options upfront even more than he does on left wing, would have more impact than Riviere there thats for sure, especially if he gets tougher year by year. Siem de Jong is also a potential striker for us, especially to link with all our offensive players.

      (Quote)

  25. Eric Sykes- Satka shouldve start against Arsenal, that would make him obvious choice for derby game.

      (Quote)

  26. I reckon getting that atmospher back at St James’ Park is crucial to any revival. I’m sure the players couldn’t help but have noticed how much the place came alive when they showed some effort and enterprise, and I assume their egos lapped it up. Let’s hope they come back for more.

And also hope that Messieurs A, C and C have that in mind when making those fantastic transfers they have lined up in the close season.

      (Quote)

  27. Must say that a fully fit Andy Carroll is the answer to our problems upfront, would make Ayoze score more. But dont know he can keep being fully fit again.

      (Quote)

  28. Cholo – sorry mate, yeah I just noticed you hadn’t mentioned incomings .
We’ve been linked with that Kara lad as well haven’t we?!. I agree with you re the forward, I quite like Cheick Diabate at Bordeaux.

      (Quote)

  29. Cholo – I think Diabate is similar to AC, but less injured . Only problem would be ACoN years when we would loose him and Cisse.

      (Quote)

  30. Sharpy17- I like Diabaté, he is a very decent player, but as you said him and Cissé going to Acn would be too much for us. In that mould if Charlie Austin is available at good price, Id take him for sure.

  31. 5 games to play and it’s still anybody’s guess who will win the league, but Stripes have the easier game this weekend, against one of the surrender monkeys.

The fight for the top 8 continues. Last game all teams directly below the top 8 won, and it meant Niknak displaced Joshua. Now only 2 wins separate 6th to 13th. It’s going to be a tight finish.

  32. Cholo – I think we need more than 1 or 2 players, mate. I think we’re missing 2 centre halves, a left winger, a centre midfielder and a striker.

      (Quote)

  33. I see Tuchel is heading to Hamburg. That’s another one gone… Working out quite nicely for Carver and Jabba.

      (Quote)

  34. Stu – is that another 2 CHs on top of Lascelles or including him?. I would defo say I extra and take Neil Taylor at LB to move Dummett over. I think we need a right winger rather than left. I want to replace Oba and would love to see Dyer come in. Agree with the CM and CF though.

As for Tuchel, I’m not sure he was ever really an option to be fair. I think it’s probably a short list of Garde, McClaren and Carver.

      (Quote)

  35. Stu / Cholo, Minimum needs in terms of ‘walk straight into the team’ players would be one centre half and one striker – and that assumes Colo can tranisition to central MF. At least one of the MFs Stu mentions are really needed as well, then all about squad players. I think that there’s a good base to build on, as there usually has been, but it’s too thin and lacks leadership – tha fact that we can, and probably will, ship out 13-14 players and be no worse off shows that sheer numbers aren’t the problem, but quality in greater depth. I can’t believe that it will actually happen, but I would like to think that fatty’s bean counters might accept that we can re-invest the wages we are trimming on a few first choice players.

      (Quote)

  36. Carver has said he will still be at the club next season no matter what happens over who is the new coach

      (Quote)

  37. Anyone think the regime will actually do the right thing this summer? By that I mean get rid of at least 10 players, bring in 5 quality players and appoint a good head coach and then the lot of them resign. Will any of that happen? 😆

      (Quote)

  38. GEORGIO I agree that’s what needs doing, but jabba will do what’s good for him not the club

      (Quote)

  39. Georgio is that 10 players plus the 3 we have already lost this season or is that including them ?.
And would you be happy enough with 5 players ? Replacing 10 or 13 players.
Ice yeah I seen that mate, but maybe Carver is just letting Jabba know that if in the unlikely event the Carver doesn’t get the job that he wont be walking away.

      (Quote)

  40. BD – 10 more mate, they’re just not up to it and have proved it over a few seasons. In my fevered imagination they are Riv, Gouffran, Obertan, Willo, Tiote, Vuckic, Bigi, Elliot, Ferguson, Campbell. There are others too but ten’s a lot already (Saylor, Raylor, Jonas, Colo?) Extreme I know but they’re either past it/haven’t made it or never good enough. It will all remain in my imagination and at a guess 5 or 6 will leave and four in (of dubious low cost quality).
Kim – in my mind one boot and one flip flop.

      (Quote)

  41. Our transfer policy is destined to fail once again because we will end up with cheap alternatives than our main targets. We will end up with a bunch of cheap players on expensive wages that we can’t get rid of.

      (Quote)

  42. As good as we were in the second half, it just shows how bad we were for 90 against Everton, and in the first half against Arsenal. I didn’t think we’d get hammered though for some reason, and we coped very well considering the squad has been mauled. Just a shame it’s another loss.

As you say Kim, it was the same under Pardew, but to be fair it is the same for most footballing sides the world over. Awful one match, solid the next. Great season, relegation form the next. Chopping and changing managers rarely ever seems to change much, once in a while someone will find consistency and appear to be a cut above the rest – look at Pochy at Southampton, only for someone else to come in with a “worse” squad and arguably do even better. It’s usually just money that comes in and tells at the end of it.

Scum match is massive now. Let’s hope there is no monkey on the back of the players now Pards is gone, and they don’t have Gus’ flukeability to drag them through this time…

      (Quote)

  43. Can’t believe I didn’t change captain to Kane, like everyone else who owns him. That’ll teach me for keeping faith with bloody Aguero..hit terrible form for the run in now, the dreams are in tatters 😆

  44. Keep seeing that video link showing Cheick Tiote supposedly calling Newcastle a **** team. I can’t get sound to work on any of the links, has any one played it?

  46. Kim – just watched it on one of the newsnow clips. His mate who is clearly a gooner is taking the **** that they beat us and he says it in a bit of a huffy way – he’s not slagging us off or being a bellend as such.
If I were Toots I’d be a bit pissed off with my ‘mate’ if I were him. That’s another video taken in a footballers house that has made the press – not as funny as the Rooney one like 😆

  48. I hope Pardew doesn’t get the manager of the year award this season. Troy will have a field day with the clueless crew.

      (Quote)

  49. Sharpy – Yes it was 2 in addition to Lascelles. I am not sure if he will be up to the PL immediately and for me, Colo is fininshed. Presently we don’t have one PL quality centre half at the club.

  50. Cheers lads, I couldn’t get sound from any of them links 👿 What an idiot, they never learn do they? Easy for him to slag off the team when he isn’t playing and likely on his way out the club 🙄 Can’t see him getting a warm reception in the dressing room anytime soon.

  53. Stu – re the CBs, I’d have to agree. I’d probably let Willo & Saylor go and keep Colo though. Lascelles and Kara Mbodji in with another that has PL experience would be nice.

  54. Sharpy – all planned mate. Get there next Thursday and 5 weeks of driving my 73 year old mother and 83 year old Aunt around. I have included a trip to Weybridge as well. But it is really a tour of the North now as I am off to Castleford, York, Whitby, Keswick, Seahouses, Rothbury, Berwick, Craster, Alnwick, Durham and a few other places.

I don’t think I will be visiting Sunderland though unless my nephew can get me a ticket.

  55. Sharpy I would try to get shot of Colo
1 he doesn’t want to be here
2 while he’s here he will have the armband, and he can hardly lead himself never mind his team mates.

  56. Does anybody have a spare ticket for the Mackems? I will pay face value and buy you a pint or two. Not Troy though, he wants to have “banter” with people and thinks insulting them is “banter”.

  57. Another excellent article Kimtoon mate. However it looks like difficult days ahead. Especially if we lose to Sunderland who actually make changes when needed. We just sit on our hands and say nothing. Pathetic really. The club is foundering under Ashley and nobody seems to care enough to do something about it (such as not going to home games until things change). Just a thought. Perhaps most like it this way. 😯

      (Quote)

  58. Our best game for months was a loss to Arsenal. That should tell people something. That we have no ambition as a club for example. Carver will never reach mid table as a head coach for us. I hope Ashley realizes that. We will be under constant pressure as long as Carver is in charge. It should be obvious to the owner by now but you never know with him. Look how many pinheads he has hired for the club over the last 8 years.

  60. I’m just surprised at how close to disaster Ashley takes us year after year. It’s as if he’s incapable of slightly modifying his plan based on results on the pitch. We’re only above the relegation zone because of one 5 game winning streak in the first half of the season. That became quite common with us under Pardew. Carver doesn’t even have the ability to put together one winning streak. Next season will be a disaster if he is still in charge.

      (Quote)

  61. SHARPY Ime afraid Colo has had his run with us time to move him on,his heart is not in it and it shows imo
