Chelsea Vs Newcastle United – Premier League Preview

This weekend see’s Newcastle United travel to Stamford Bridge looking to consolidate their position clear of the relegation zone. Chelsea have been unbreakable since Guus Hiddink came in though, so this will be no easy task.

Chelsea:

The Blues are fortunate to have a very clean bill of health, with only 3 players currently injured. However, the loss of Kurt Zouma for 6 months with an ACL knee injury is a big loss. Ramadel Falcao has done his groin in (he rarely plays these days so he must have done this some other….’ahem’….way…) whilst ex-Toon striker Loic Remy is likely to recover from a calf injury in time to challenge for a place in the match-day squad.

Newcastle United:

Unsurprisingly, Newcastle United is top of the treatment table league. Tim Krul (ACL knee) and Curtis Good (hip) remain out for the season but we can expect returns to the match day squad for Siem De Jong (eye) and Jack Colback (hamstring) whilst Daryl Janmaat has shaken off a thigh injury. This game comes too soon for Kevin Mbabu (thigh) and Vurnon Anita (hamstring), who are scheduled to return at the end of the month. Gabby Obertan (hamstring) and Massaido Haidara (knee) are out for at least a month still, whilst there is no news on Paul Dummett (hamstring) or Chancel Mbemba (ankle).

Shamrock’s Stats & Facts:

1) Chelsea are unbeaten in the league since Guus Hiddink took over from Jose Mourinho.
2) Newcastle have failed to score or take a single point in their last 3 visits to Stamford Bridge.
3) Chelsea have failed beat the Toon in the last 11 games between the sides when Newcastle have scored.
4) Guus Hiddink has only lost 1 of his 21 Premier League matches.
5) The Blues are on the longest current unbeaten run in the league, with 9.
6) Newcastle have taken more points off Chelsea (13) than any other team in the last 5 seasons.
7) The Magpies have only won twice on the road this season, losing the last 4 away games.
8) Chelsea have drawn their last 4 home games – against Watford, West Brom, Everton and Manchester United.
9) The most goals ever scored in this fixture was in the 1958/1959 season – Chelsea winning 6-5.
10) The Magpies have scored less goals on the road than any other team this season.

Referee:

Officiating this one is 50-year-old Roger East, who represents the Wiltshire County FA. Despite his age, he only took to being the man in the middle from the 2006/2007 season – being a linesman before that, including at the 2004 FA Cup Final. East was only promoted to the Premier League Select Group from the 2013/2014 season. He is a relatively steady referee with no history of contentious decisions of note. He has taken charge of 4 Newcastle games this season, including our 2 losses to Watford, our draw with Stoke and our last away victory at Tottenham Hotspur.

Final Thought:

Whilst Wijnaldum’s goals and our 2 recent league wins have been a big lift for us in our relegation battle, it has all been at home. If Newcastle is serious about staying up, then the players need to start performing away from home. We are the worst team in the league on the road and that is really not good enough. Whilst Chelsea are unbeaten in 10, they just cannot buy win at home at the moment. If our boys apply themselves with the kind of passion and fight they showed against West Brom, then I’d be quietly confident of coming away from Stamford Bridge with a point – that’s unless McClaren gets his tactics and selection completely wrong again like he did against Everton during our last away trip….

One big thing we have going for us is that our side seems to step up for the games broadcast on national television. This fixture is on Sky Sports – so fingers crossed!!

Chelsea V Newcastle United
Stamford Bridge
Saturday 13th February 2016
Kick Off: 17:30 Live on Sky Sports 1.

  1. Stuart is backtracking over previous threads to see where he said after 10 games he would sack McLaren. Don’t hold your breath everyone. He wot find one. 😀

    1. Dont call me mate. 😉
    2. Stop dithering 😉
    3. Stop eating cherries 😉
    4. Go to bed. 😉

  3. Reet. Off to bed. I will sleep soundly tonight knowing that Stuart won’t produce one piece of evidence that he wanted McLaren sacked after 10 games.
    😉
Some people should be careful what they say. 😀

  4. No Troy, I can’t find one. I could probably find about 20 though!! 😆

As for Ashley changing his tune. Firstly he might not need to because Moyes may take the job anyway but it could also be argued he’s already changed it. Apparently Shelvey and Townsend were McClaren picks. Unfortunately though, that probably another reason why he won’t be sacked!

      (Quote)

  5. @Troy.

    Where have I dithered ?

I said from the start I would never hire SM.
I’ve maintained i would only sack SM for better (clark is not better)
Ive always doubted whether Ashley/Charnley would sack SM despite how poor we are.

    where’s the dither?

you on the other had said we’d get better despite you clinging on to Pardew for dear life for the same reasons I’m dithering over…we won’t get better….. 🙄

      (Quote)

  6. why did we play Aarons at left back if Colback was fit enough to be benched? why did a want-a-way Tiote play instead of Colback or Saviet.

We looked so slow in the middle yesterday. Tiote lost Willian and was never able to match his pace all game.

I’m sick of seeing Sissoko bottle 70/30 balls in his favour! he also needs dropping.

West Brom aside, we actually look more vulnerable since Townsend and Shelvey signed. I’m not saying they’re poor but its the wrong time of the season to turn to jelly in the middle..

      (Quote)

  7. Gashley – It’s part of McClarens one cap fits all approach. He thinks of we win a match the same team should play again regardless of who we play. It shows his limitations. How on earth he thought it was a good idea to play only one defensive minded midfielder against Chelsea is beyond me. Or Aarons at left back against the likes of Willian, Hazard and Fabregas. He’s just a clown.

I have come to the conclusion that Charnley and Ashley don’t see the games and don’t see the TV. McClaren must tell them were 10th and playing really well.

We are third bottom. Have been virtually all season. You don’t think we could get better? Even Lee Clark could have a honeymoon period. We are running out of games. Something different has to be tried.
You stick with McLaren though as you don’t think we could get better. YCMIU.
I stuck with Pardew cos we weren’t in real danger of going down.

      (Quote)

  9. no Troy. you maintained throughout that we wouldnt hire better than Pardew. thats why you said you’d keep him. are you saying you didnt..?

      (Quote)

  10. whats with this lee clark ***** mate. honestly. where is lee clark now? where has he ever been to take us on? would sissoko etc find more fire in their bellies after lee clark has bellowed instructions at them 😯

Maybe after Clarky has been out of work for 3 years we should go back for him then, he’ll be well equipped to take on a champions league club after a lengthy stink according to your logic. 😛

      (Quote)

  11. Gashley
Let’s make things clear though this is the umpteenth time.
I didn’t want to change Pardew because I didn’t think we could attract better. Correct.
The reason being we were generally in a mid table position and not in danger of relegation like we are now.
I always maintained he was doing a decent job with the hand he was dealt.
You wanted him out and got what you wanted.
In came McLaren. A worse manager.
I acknowledge you never wanted him but I did warn you that he or a similar level of manager was the likely outcome because of Ashleys policy of transfers and limited managerial role.
We have been in the bottom 3 virtually all season. I’ve been saying since around 10 games that Ashley needs to consider sacking McLaren before its too late. You have maintained only if there’s someone better.
My point is, I said we would be the same after 20 games and not long before we have 6 games left and people like you would be saying the same thing. Only if someone better is available.
Can you not see it is not hard to replace him. Even old journeymen can have an influence over a short period. I’ve said Lee Clark until the end of the season. Hes just an example of many who could take over until the end of the seasin. A change of voice. New ideas. Motivation.
You are dithering over McLaren. It’s going to be too late before you agree to try something different is the right thing to do.
Yes you are using the same reasons I used for pards. But pards was doing a decent job. McLaren isn’t.
    Surely you can understand this.

      (Quote)

  12. troy. you have wasted your time on the last post. you have wrote nothing i didnt get the first time you wrote it 😛

We both agree SM is *****. I just don’t agree Clarky would make a jot of difference.. so lets agree to disagree. 😉

Anyway, one of your main reasons for Pards was his man-management, a lot gave him credit when credit was due after digging us out of a hole. Palace fans are seeing why we asked for better. We had it a lot worse than them. have you been on the Palace blogs defending him 😛

      (Quote)

  13. i see his little tuft of ginger hair is still intact – really can’t see it lasting much longer.

    .

      (Quote)

  14. Gashley
So you are still dithering over McLaren. 😉
Regards Pardew and the palace fans then I always expect it wherever he manages . I used to have the same gripes. However Palace fans just like you and the toon fans need to realise the average standing of the respective clubs. Average clubs attract average managers. Palace will get rid of Pards and in come another average manager and it won’t be long before term blogs are full of the same bile.
    Sound familiar. 😉

  15. I’ve just been watching MOTD from last night. That Kone at Scum looks a real good buy for them – big, strong in the air, pacy and real goal threat on set pieces. Why we didn’t think to spend £5m on him when we knew we were short on defenders?!.

As for our game, I forgot how lazy we looked. Yes we were ****, but our passing looked lazy, our defending looked lazy. As soon as the first went in we just seemed to accept that we were going to loose the game. Worryingly Shelvey looks to be a homer for me. Cracking at SJP but he forgets to turn up for away games IMO.
Only positive (and it’s clutching at straws) was Townsends finish.

      (Quote)

  16. Pardews biggest problem is that he can go on a 9 game unbeaten run and get everyone talking, only to follow it up by a run of 9 defeats. If he mixed it up a bit he’d get the credit the likes of Hughes gets.
He has proven with us, and now Palace that he is a solid mid-lower mid table PL manager IMO.
Anyone who says they wouldn’t take him back in place of McClaren is saying it out of spite – because his win record with us is far better than the grin reapers – and he had poorer players.

      (Quote)

  17. So palace fans, just like us should just get used to him and remain so unambitious that fans stop going to matches? even though we are one of the biggest spenders we will never get a decent manager under Mike?

I’d rather voice my opinion and make a change than suffer mediocre. You suffered by not going. where’s the fun in that?

I still want better! if it means we go down & SM leaves, I’ll still be optimistic for change..hopefully Ashley will follow him out of the door.. 😉

      (Quote)

  18. What is the point in talking about Pardew and Lee Clark? It is typical Troy, putting up an agenda that has nothing to do with the present situation. And Troy, that means I do not want to talk about either at the moment as we have been over it a million times and it is irrelevant to where we are now.

I will add one more thing to what is happening. Stop calling Shelvey the “quarterback”. He has that pass in him but by calling him a quarterback it encourages him to try it too often. It is like when the crowd yells shoooot at Tiote. Shelvey will help us more if he keeps it simple most of the time and only goes for the odd hollywood pass.

      (Quote)

  19. @Sharpy. I was thinking this too. Shelvey is definitely a home player. he was terible yesterday, just like he was at Everton.

Kone hasnt looked that good in the games ive saw, he did yesterday.

its criminal we have nobody to come in for Mbemba or Colo. why the hell we spent money on Cabella or Thauvin instead of a decent centerhalf is mental. they offer no more than Sammy 🙄

      (Quote)

  20. Eric – Shelvey looked lazy yesterday. I know what you are saying about the passing thing though. He can knock a 70yd pass on a six pence, but he played a **** poor pass back to Saylor yesterday that nearly resulted in a goal – he can lack concentration at times.

      (Quote)

  21. there is nothing more certain than the makkems making it 7 in a row. the mere size of the makkem team will cause all sorts of problems. allardyce has mcnuggets card marked too, will have him stitched up tactically. stop janmaat and you stop the toon…

      (Quote)

  22. @Sharpy. its a tough one. I would never choose Pullis or Warnock but I’d probably rate them higher than SM. I wouldnt re-sign Pardew. if we did it would be confirmation to what we’re all about, a shambles.

I would probably give up on football for a bit.

Maybe I’m being too optimistic? we’ve spent a lot of money on the wrong players and areas and let a **** manager run us. Does Ashley or Charnley not see the fundamental problems here?

      (Quote)

  23. What was the stat about how many wanted McClaren appointed – 3%? People on here saying anybody defended him are barking up the wrong tree and are simply after an argument for arguments sake.

The fact is that there are now many, many managers available who are better than McClaren who weren’t available at the start of the season. McClaren has had his chance and failed. I don’t care if Shelvey and Townsend were his players, a better manager will manage them better.

      (Quote)

  24. sharpster, whereas i agree with you to a certain extent regarding shelvey’s occasional lack of concentration, i reckon he was seriously frustrated yesterday at the willingness of his teammates. we couldn’t string 3 passes together, and sissoko, tiote, janmaat and wijnaldum spent all day giving the ball away.
i’d really like to see the posession stats from yesterday, 80% Chelsea posession wouldn’t surprise me. mcnugget has just found iut some serious home truths, we have too few players in the team who can actually pass to a teammate and retain the ball under pressure. absolutely shocking, labourious, tactically inept, and beaten before we took the field.

the idiot charnley has made his second biggest mistake by leaving it too late to fire mcnugget (the biggest one being hiring mcnugget).

      (Quote)

  25. Who are the out of work managers we could look at?

    Pearson
    Rodgers
    Moyes
    Bielsa
    Nuno
    Benitez

There are probably others I forgot and some of these may not come. But we do have some options apart from Lee Fcin Clark FFS.

      (Quote)

  26. I would take Rodgers at this point even though I think he is a bit of a tool. He has the self confidence to get our team playing and is used to playing with a **** defense. Pearson would be the easy choice though and better than McClaren.

      (Quote)

  27. Problem is, if we couldn’t/wouldn’t bring in a better man than Pards what makes people think we would now. Add the fact that SM is now on the board and I just can’t see Jabba giving him the boot. He has said he’s no good at the football thing and will leave it up to others he’s entrusted the job with. Given that stance it’s clear Lee & co will not act for fear it makes them look mugs with the possibility of losing their jobs. Jabba also seems to have blind faith in his managers even when on a dangerous downward spiral as we saw with Pards and Carver.

      (Quote)

  28. West Ham had nearly signed Benitez before Madrid came in for him. Would he look at us under Ashley as ambitious enough? hmm thats where I struggle.

Mike needs to chance most of his policies before we can attract better imo

      (Quote)

  29. dumb and dumber, charnley and mcnugget getting all they deserve, one shouldn’t be there in the first place, with the other mcnugget not believing that he would be offered such a high profile position after years of failure. the chance to resurrect his career in england a whole series of fail-starts, qpr, forest, derby and now the toon.

charnley, you took one massive gamble hiring mcnugget and now you are going to pay dearly with relegation.
will ashley fire the incompetents ? of course not, he hasn’t a clue either.

wonder what the wonder-guru steve black makes of all this, he’s got his work cut out trying to motivate our bunch of wasters

      (Quote)

  30. MM, Shelvey was arguing with SM and the coaching staff on the sideline yesterday. Cracks are starting to show, Christ the way we played yesterday you would think it was our team that was suffering the shock of having a Peado on the playing staff not the Scum. By the way they will murder us from set pieces and it will be 7 in a row.

      (Quote)

  31. Troy you said sack Pardew if we lose to Leicester. So you were on the sack Pardew bandwagon, granted you did say MA would not replace him with better. However, I can find lots of quotes from fans that said they did not want the Grin Reaper from day 1. In fact a fan vote on this site showed only 4% of fans wanted him. I’m not sure what point you are trying to make. You are contradicting yourself. You say you claimed replacing Pardew would be fruitless because we would just get a like for like replacement and in the same breath breath you repeatedly suggest Lee Clarke should replace McClaren, who is not like for like – but has achieved precisely nothing in his managerial career at any nokteable level. You also suggest Terry Venables, which shows you are either certifiable or a WUM. One or the other!

      (Quote)

  32. why should one of the mentioned managers risk blowing there future career prospects by taking over a basket case toon in a serious downward spiral ? they can only lose…

charnley, mcnugget and ashley have through there incompetence made there own bed, they are the only ones who can pull off the great escape. unfortunately all three of them are out of there depth…

charnley will probably give mcnugget the chance to gain us promotion from the championship, or at least move him upstairs completely, and allow radgie nigel pearson to give it a shot.

      (Quote)

  33. oh no we have one top lad making a massive effort to keep the blog ticking over single-handidly, and he has to spend most of his time keeping the wum’s and told-you-so’s at bay 😕

      (Quote)

  34. Newks@323,Sorry, I wasn’t saying you said that, didn’t intend it to read that way, merely that you said his team was worse than ours or poor as I worded it. The flying high bit was my words, because they were. Point remains the same though, why were they before but not now? that’s all I’m saying . It is relevant to mention him since we are talking about man management and tactics and clearly he is not getting what he was out of his players there, so what has changed?

      (Quote)

  35. & here’s me thinking i was going mad 😆 cheers Shamrock for confirming I’m not the only one that finds Troy confusing?

he still hasnt answered whether we’d be able to sign Moyes despite him suggesting managers would come here but on the other hand we wouldnt get better under Ashley… 😕

      (Quote)

  36. kimtoon@488, i noticed that with shelvey too mate. once over he made a arm flapping gesture at sissoko too, he has probably realised how desperate the situation is.
must say the introduction of doumbia was also an absolute low point, another sign that mcnugget has lost the plot.

    Good read, Sham.
For me he isn’t and never was qualified for a job in the PL – especially not one as big as this. The results are just confirming this. I want him out because I never wanted him in the first place, but results aren’t improving either and the discipline in the squad is terrible and that shows a distinct lack of respect from the players to the coach.”

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy – The players looked like they didn’t know what they were suppose to be doing to me. No movement, no positional idea and no game plan. No wonder they looked confused

      (Quote)

  39. Ne worries Stu. Cheers MM btw 🙂

In that 10 games article I said 2 things: 1) If we re still in the drop zone come January, then the Grin Reaper should be sacked. 2) If we dont improve the defense in January, we will go down for certain. Uh Oh! 🙁

BTW in the same thread TAE said he just could not see us anywhere near the relegation zone come January… D’oh!

The common theme back then and still is now 2 things; 1) We need sign a proper, progressive manager instead of cheap tat all the time. 2) We need to sort the defense out.

Why does the board continually fail on those 2 fronts? It’s like they can’t help but continually self harm when they could have it so much better. Maybe the entire board including Mike Ashley actually need psychological help?

      (Quote)

  40. See Amstrong notched another couple of goals for Coventry yesterday 19 in 26 matches now , oh yeah we need a goal scorer and Isnt he our player ? Still , stick with an on loan player that is not fit for 90 minutes of football . Well be fine 🙄

      (Quote)

  41. And Sharpy, when you fear Shelvey could be a homer, I think we need to look deeper than that. Where were his options when he had the ball yesterday or against Everton? It was desperate in front of him in both games.

      (Quote)

  42. at times we actually look a lot worse than we did with defensive duo Anita and Colback in the team…I think our new attack minded players are exposing the vulnerable defence

      (Quote)

  43. Sham – It’s a real worry when most supporters and even most local journo’s know what we need but the club don’t. Consistently they do the wrong thing. They don’t deserve to be in the PL in my opinion.

      (Quote)

  44. Gash – That’s the big problem. He doesn’t have a game plan to protect what is a poor defence. He hasn’t been able to get the balance right and it’s utter madness that he has continued to do the same thing every single time.

      (Quote)

  45. @Stu

it disgusts me to think Charnley doesnt hear or see whats going on around him. I think he’s bought Jacko’s hibernation tank and only leaves it to massage Ashleys tits when his SD shares are down

      (Quote)

  46. @stu

More the point in spending wisely, we should of spent the Thauvin money on decent defenders and more money on a strike force that can score. we’re f**ked at both ends with a midfield not knowing what to do… 👿 ..

      (Quote)

  47. Sham – At the start of the season McClaren was given a minimum target of top 8. He’s not just failed, he’s completely and utterly failed miserably! Not to mention getting knocked out of the league cup to a Championship team and getting knocked out of the FA cup in the first round.

My question to the board is; What has he achieved to warrant him still being in the job? Has he done anything at all well?

      (Quote)

  48. GASHLEY iTS Valentines day and your talking about Ashleys tits being massaged ❗ Please refrain from posting those sort of thoughts mate , its sick 😯

      (Quote)

  49. Stu, the only thing he has done well, from what I have observed – is brush his teeth very well. Have you noticed? They are very white. He’s clearly very proud of them, that’s why he keeps smiling after games even when we have been hammered? When other managers are spending hours studying the opposition and working on match day tactics, the Grin Reaper is stood in front of a mirror with an extra large pack of tooth floss and a nice box of Arm & hammer advanced white.

  54. I think that Steve proved again yesterday he has no clue about team selection. He was lucky that West Brom did not attack Aarons but should have known that he would be ineffective (at best) against Willian, Hazard and Pedro. Similarly, Tiote had one good game against a team that sat back and now he is the answer??? He was an accident waiting to happen against Chelsea.

It is like when he picked Perez as the lone striker against Everton.

I know this is after the fact but I wasn’t around to post it when the teams were announced. I also don’t like to jinx things either by being too critical before a ball is kicked.

  56. Stu – don’t get me wrong mate, I’m a big fan of Shelvey & was buzzing when we signed him. This team yesterday – the players & formation was the same as last week. I don’t know for sure, but I’d think the instruction would have been the same – it certainly should have been. But at times yesterday they looked like it was the first time they’d ever played together.

My concern is that he did give the different instruction to last week in terms of trying to contain for the first 20mins. I base that off what he said in his post match interview. When what we should have done is go after them from the off – and I reckon the players probably thought that too.

  57. Lee Chumpley will have trouble bladdering McNugget because he will be signing his own death warrant.

I’m afraid Ashley needs to step in, and we all know from Pardew’s misdemeanours that Ashley doesn’t make tough decisions like that… so we’ll have to watch on in vain as McNugget takes us down…

The whole cabal of imbiciles need to take the blame for this, The Board, Chumpley, McNugget, Ashley, the whole bunch of wasters…

  58. Axel@500, at least one good thing regarding Armstrong is we won’t need to loan him out to a Championship side next season, he can quite simply come back to his parent club to fight for a place..
