Rafa simply must stay.

Newcastle United is putting up a very good fight in the scramble for Premier League safety. If the club stays up, it does so with Rafa Benitez as the manager (in the proper sense) and we as fans can look forward to supporting a club looking to make genuine progress for the first time under Mike Ashley’s reign.

It all sounds like a dream. A warm, welcoming light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel. Trouble is, it may well be too little, too late. Why the board did not sack Steve McClaren before the Spain trip we will never know. We all knew he was a dead man walking and the players were not responding to him or his team.

Rafa was sacked on the 4th January by Los Galacticos. It may be that he wanted to assess his options and have a break from the game. However, just think how different our league position might look today if the club had canned Schteve in January and given Rafa complete control over the winter transfer window. Why Carr was trusted to blow another 30 odd million is anybody’s guess after the debacle of his summer signings for the 2nd season in a row.

What we are left with now feels like a cruel joke. Mike Ashley has given us a genuine world class manager for the first time under his reign. The result? A man with big cojones who knows what he is talking about has galvanised a squad we all thought was devoid of effort, pride and even basic footballing skills. Players like Anita, Sissoko and Tiote have effectively come back from the dead because we have a manager who knows how to get the best from them – and where their best positions are. He has taught the team how to defend as a solid unit instead a bunch of headless chickens and he has shown no hesitation in making it clear that names and reputations mean nothing to him – by dropping the likes of Shelvey, Wijnaldum and Mitrovic.

Rafa will do what is best for the club. Not what is best for his ‘big’ players. The players will take this on the chin too, because you don’t question a man with Rafa Benitez’ track record. As a result the team has pulled off a strong victory against Swansea and more recently, two extremely impressive comebacks – first at home to money bags Manchester City and then away at Liverpool in a stadium driven by another world class manager and fans of equal passion to the Geordies. All this with a squad full of players that he did not sign. Rafa has taken a lop sided squad and identified a system it can thrive in. He has then applied that system and made the players believe in it. Results continue to follow. Yes – at long last we have a real leader at the club.

So why is his appointment cruel? Because we have so little time left with him before we go back to the same old dross. That is, if we get relegated despite his best efforts. Sunderland have two games in hand, are level on points with Newcastle and have a far superior goal difference. Despite the Toon’s recent resurgence, the club is still relying on our relegation rivals having a stinker of a run in. The odds are still firmly stacked against us.

All fingers and toes are crossed that Rafa and his charges pull off the great escape. If Rafa manages it, it will go down in history with Houdini’s water torture trick and the British commonwealth soldiers escaping ze German PoW camp during world war 2. In fact, it would be even better. Generations will be talking about it all over the globe. There would be annual celebrations with fireworks – and films made about it. Seriously…?

We need to face the very real possibility though, that Rafa’s appointment was just too late in the game to have a meaningful incluence. In that event, we face a fate even worse than relegation- a future without Rafa Benitez. We go back to bang average managers and a squad devoid of passion or leadership. Maybe we get promoted, maybe we don’t. What does it matter? We will just be treading water again for years on end.

That is why the bigger question the board and fans should be asking is not whether we stay up or go down, but can we make Rafa stay no matter what the outcome of this season is? Mike Ashley needs to strike a deal early with Rafa – before the season ends and Rafa gets poached. He needs to cede total control of all footballing matters to the Spanish mastermind and need to give him any assurances he wishes.

The fans need to sing his name loud and proud – all game, every game. Make him feel loved. He has given hints in recent interviews of wanting the kind of relationship he still enjoys with Liverpool fans. The man breathes football and he wants a new spiritual home. We can give it to him and I think that would be enough to convince him to stay in the event of relegation. But we all need to do our bit to make him feel like it would be worth it. Starting with Mike Ashley and finishing with us, the fans.

  1. Can also see Norwich getting 6 more points too cause their last two games are Watford and Everton 🙄

  2. Kim – that’s the concern for me. Scum have Stoke – who have been ***** in there last 2 games. A usually solid defence that looks like it has been taking lessons off our back 4. Then after that they have Everton & Watford – who are also minging at the moment.

Norwich have Arsenal & Man Utd – which should be good as both still chasing those CL spots.
But then have Watford & Everton to finish up with.

  3. Possibly the most relevant result today is palace reaching the cup final. They are safe in the league, key players may get rested and others will be scared of getting injured.
Can’t believe gooners failed so miserably though, could prove fatal, on paper their hardest remaining game.

  4. I’m sure I’ve missed something… All of a sudden S/land and Norwich have become Barcelona! They’re not good teams so it doesn’t matter if Stoke or Everton are on holiday or not. They’re not as good as them so won’t beat them.

We are better than Palace and Villa with a top manager too with momentum. There is absolutely no reason why we can’t win all our remaining games. We have a better squad than both Sunderland and Norwich and in my opinion have easier fixtures. Even Spurs as they’ll be completely deflated by the time we play them.

  5. To back up my point that relegation threatened teams usually continue their relegation form but pick up the odd extra win… When Sunderland had a narrow escape last year Advocat was heralded as doing a great job. This was their form in the last 10 – LLWLDWWDDL. So it was 12 points from 10 games, a little over a point a game and close to relegation form. It was obviously just enough though.

This year with four to go for them their last 6 has been DDDLWD. So 7 points from 6. Again just above a point per game.

What I am saying is that it would be unusual for the relegation battlers to suddenly find champions form. It would be usual if we do as well. The difference between us and Norwich and Sunderland is that we have a catalyst and a world class coach. When was the last time a relegation fighter attracted a world class coach with 10 games to go? I would venture never.

  6. Oh and if we had lost our last two games I could understand the glass half full attitude but we’ve just drew against City and Liverpool – when everyone (expect me) thought we would lose both. It will go down to the last game and I would be delighted with that as I think we’d win it.

  8. Agree, Eric. Although I see us bucking that trend. Partly because we have good players who should not be anywhere near a relegation battle, good fixtures and as you say we have a great manager.

      (Quote)

  9. Stuart: we have a chance that it will come down to the last game because of who we play. Norwich and Sunderland are likely to pick up 5 or 6 points at most and it would be unusual if they get more. We need at least 6 I think, probably 7, and maybe all 9. That is still a big ask so I am sticking at 45% on the Stuart-O-Meter.

What possible reason can people think they can beat Watford, Stoke, Chelsea or Everton? They’ve played well for the last two months and still only won twice. At least we’re starting to improve and pick up results.

  12. Stu – we have a better squad than Scum & Norwich, yet we could only pull a late draw against Scum & Norwich beat us – both with Rafa at the helm …. The new manager affect I read so much about on this blog didn’t come into play then.

Nobody is saying either are Barca. We are simply saying that those teams have winnable games too. If you watched the game today, Sunderland had their chances too.

Our form under Rafa has improved, but our defence still looks gash. We have only won 1 game under Rafa, yet we are all supposed to buy into the idea we will win our final 3 without reservation – how many back to back wins have we put together this season?. Yesterday was our FIRST away point of 2016 FFS.

We have a real chance with the 5 pts we have just picked up – but as it stands, I’d still say Sunderland are in the driving seat (and that leaves a nasty taste).

  13. Sharpy, the players are only just starting to get to grips with what Rafa is asking them to do. Do you really think we’d have got anything from the last two games with McClaren? We got battered against Bournemouth so it’s unlikely we’d have beat Swansea either. As I said numerous times, we only needed a win to get the confidence and we have that now.

We have started playing well, Sunderland have been playing well for the past 2 months yet still can’t win more than 2 in 13! Why do you think they can win 2 out of 4? We can because we’re actually picking up results with our up turn in performances. Sunderland haven’t been doing that.

  15. Correct, Dave. Amazed how it’s thought Sunderland can win games when they haven’t been able to do and they’ve been playing well for the last two months. We’ve only just started playing well… Bit late but better late than never.

  16. I know it is in the books now but the Ref missed a simple hand ball for Norwich’s winner. Typical of our season really.

The teams that have new ownership like Watford and Everton will probably stick with their current managers until season’s end as I don’t see the point of changing with 3 games to go. The problem might be that the players see them as dead men walking and give up.

They aren’t that attractive to new managers though and why would new owners pump money in when they have already hit the jackpot with the new PL deal. They are more likely to take money out or wait until someone will pay a higher price like I am sure the West Ham owners plan on.

How do you really compete when the top teams will have boat loads of cash and be managed by: Pep, Mourinho, Poch, Conte, Wenger, Klopp, Koeman (and maybe Rafa if we stay up). You don’t. You want mid-table and to hope you got the club at a bargain price and will sell on in a few years.

Obviously Leicester are the exception but I think we expect it to return to the status quo next season. Maybe West Ham might sneak top six with their gift of a new stadium and massive new revenue stream that they can borrow against for new players.

Sunderland are a point ahead of us with a better goal difference as things stand right now. They have 4 games remaining – 3 you would say are winnable – or are as winnable for Sunderland as Palace & Villa are for us I would say.
I’m not saying they will win them, I’m just saying that with a balanced review of what’s left, I would still put Sunderland slightly ahead.

Dave – who’s threw the towel in?.

I also can’t believe that some think WE are going to go on this unbeaten run – whilst writing Sunderland & Norwich off.
We have 1 away point in 2016, yet some see the Villa game as a banker.
This situation is so ironic it’s laughable, as it’s usually Stu telling me I am blindly optimistic.

Beat Palace, with Chelsea beating Scum and Arsenal beating Norwich and I’ll dare to believe.
But as things stand we have given ourselves a real fighting chance – nothing more.

At the same time it’s no certainly we’ll beat Palace. They have a lot of pace and I’m sure Parsnip will have them fired up to send us down

      (Quote)

  26. Sharp for me the way I look at it is that Scum and Norwich have had settled managers so there is no real reason why their form would change. But we have had a new manager that has now finally started to get his ideas across to the players so for me he is starting to get the new manager honeymoon period. So I really do believe that we can keep going and add to the last 3 games. As for bloggers throwing the towel in a quick scroll through here will show you some that have through the towel in

      (Quote)

  27. They’ve picked up 6 points from their last 5 games. But they have been playing really well apparently yet still only got 6 points! We’ve picked up 5 points in our last 3 games and we’ve only been playing well for the last 3 games too. So basically, I can’t believe Sunderland will play well every game but if they did and got the same points ration they’ll end up with 35 points.

I agree with that. When Watford played us they were battling every ball and looked a quality team, same as Everton. They’ve definitely packed their bags.. Similar to when we were playing under SM, didn’t care enough

Arsenal totally bottled it today, pulled out of sooo many challenges, Ne wonder they’ll not win the league with this team.

I didn’t say we’d struggle did I? I said it’s not a formality. We were well beaten by Bournemouth recently who play a similar pacey game as Palace.

Lol after the season we’ve witnessed with players showing no fight I could see how fans might think it’s now too late to survive. Throwing the towl in is what the players did up until Bournemouth at home and more recently S’ton away. I remain hopeful but a little worried

One, maybe 2 might do well but not all 3. It is likely that if we can be the team to go on a good run we will have a chance at survival, but I would agree that Sunderland are favourites because even with Rafa there is no guarantee for us.

Just being realistic in keeping with my Stuart-O-Meter of 45%. If we win against Palace and our rivals have draws or worse I might be convinced to fully jump on board.

That makes Everton a huge game as its their game in hand and also if they lose they will be relegated.

In that 6 games we have 6pts. Scum have picked up 7 in the last 6 games.

They say it’s best to have points in the bag – Sunderland have 1 more than us.

They say it could come down to goal difference – Sunderland are 8 better off.

They say it’s opportunity to get points – Scum have 4 games remaining, we have 3.

Those things put them in a more favourable position – it does not mean they stay up and we don’t.
We have a chance, but the above gives them a slightly better one IMO.

  58. I just looked up the records and Villa and Palace are the worst league teams in 2016. Even worse than us, Norwich and the Mackems. If we had to pick opponents based on form it would be these two.

Now, Spurs are the worst we could face based on form along with Leicester. But for that game to have any meaning we really have to beat Palace and Villa meaning we would then be a form team having picked up 11 from 15 and we would be at home.

Does that make sense, or am I clutching at straws?

Eric – it makes perfect sense mate. That’s why I think we have a real chance as things stand.
But there are still a lot of ‘ifs’.
The point I was making last night was that the Scum have an extra point & better goal difference and game in hand. They also have games against out of form teams in Watford & Everton and Stoke are slipping up too.
If we win on Saturday & Scum and Norwich get beat then I think the pendulum swings back in our favour.

  60. The best ‘hope’ we have, is that Rafa has instilled a little belief into the squad. This really can’t be underestimated. To come back from 0-2 away at Annfield is quite remarkable actually, particularly in the form they are currently in. I take my hat off to them all for that, but now we MUST start matches with the same approach. It’s all about hard work for 90 mins.

  61. BB, I agree, no one wants us to survive more than me mate but it’s a hell of a task to win 3 in a row which realistically is what we need to do I think. Fact is it’s out of our hands now and that’s just horrible. I still see Scum turning over Watford and Stoke or Everton mainly because of Defoe, he won’t keep missing chances that’s for sure. Scum have some real battlers too and their defence has tightened up and improved under Sam. We are still conceding too many goals and it would be awful if goal difference sent us down.

Sunderland have actually won 1 in the last 8 and they’ve been playing well. Now am I suppose to believe they will miraculously win 3 out of their last 4?

We’re actually getting better and results are coming too.I’d say we’re favourites to stay up actually.

    bet365 don’t agree with you.
they have us @ 3/1 to stay up & 2/9 to be relegated – but what would they know 🙂

if your that confident then you could make some decent money backing your fancy.

  63. The comeback on Saturday was fantastic and I didn’t see it coming at all based on first half performance. We need to start games as well as we started the second half, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot. On the plus side it shows belief from the lads which has been sadly lacking all season and just might make the difference. Saturday will tell us our future I think, lose or draw and Scum or Norwich win then that’s us done I reckon.

  64. To be fair Roy, I remember sky bet and one or 2 others freezing all bets on a manager and a player joining Toon during the summer – only for it not to happen. They are making educated guesses just like the rest of us.

  66. Gut feeling is we are down Kim. We are a game behind the others with a worse goal difference and minus a point. Are we really going to go on a 6 game unbeaten streak for the run in whilst the others dont pick up points? 40% is probably a bit optimistic but they are showing signs of fight and Rafa definitely knows how to adapt during a game. Just wish the lads knew how to start a game properly instead of having to claw back.

A good Saturday puts us 2 points clear and then the other sides have to win their games in hand. That pressure may see them fold.

I know its a poor Villa, but our away form is abysmal. 1 point all year and then we face a Spurs side with a red hot Kane and Alli in it.

Not fussed if we go down IF we keep Rafa to be honest, but would obviously prefer to stay up. If we go down and be leaves then I’m giving up. Not watching sevefal more years of bang average managers served up by the clueless crew (Ashley and Co.).
