Fee: £6 million

Hardly a frugal acquisition considering it was at the turn of the century, Marcelino made just 17 appearances during his 5 year stint on Tyneside. Perhaps best known for having a poorly finger, this Spanish centre back came and went at St James’ Park in anonymous fashion leading many NUFC fans to question if he actually existed.
