The five worst Premier League signings ever made by Newcastle United

luque4) Albert Luque

Club: Deportivo La Coruna

Fee: £9.5 million

After ‘rising’ through the ranks at Barcelona’s youth academy (he got released from their C team at age 20), chairman at the time Freddy Shepherd and of course Souness saw it fit that a fee of nearly £10 million was the right amount to pay for him.

Such was the sheer underwhelming-factor of his time at the club, a famous 4-1 win over Sunderland in 2006 in which Luque scored a rare goal, prompted fans to chant, ‘4-1, even Luque scored!’

For a striker to receive such humiliating treatment from his own fans tells you all you need to know. He was a striker who simply couldn’t score and for that reason he’s firmly booked his place on our list.
