Fulham Vs Newcastle United – Championship Match Thread

Welcome to the season opener, where Fulham play host to Newcastle United. Rafa Benitez and his troops will be hoping to get off with a positive start to the campaign in an effort to build early momentum and live up to the tag of being favorites to go back up to the Premier League as Championship Champions.

This squad has seen significant change this summer, with much more change to come – so although a strong start would be great, realistically it will take a few weeks and maybe even months before the side is firing on all cylinders. There is no doubt we have the best manager on board since Sir Bobby Robson and he has made a big committment to the Geordie faithful by agreeing to stay on in the face of relegation. Lets continue to show him the same support we gave him at the end of last season, regardless of how the next couple of months go.

Fulham:
27 Button, 26 Kalas, 4 Odoi, 15 Madl, 3 Malone, 6 McDonald, 19 Tunnicliffe, 10 Cairney, 24 Aluko, 11 Ayité, 9 Smith, Substitutes: 5 Stearman, 8 Parker, 13 Ream, 16 Woodrow, 21 Christensen, 37 Edun, 41 Joronen.

Newcastle United:
28 Sels, 22 Janmaat, 6 Lascelles, 5 Hanley, 3 Dummett, 8 Anita, 14 Hayden, 4 Colback, 11 Ritchie, 17 Pérez, 9 Gayle, Substitutes: 12 Shelvey, 16 Aarons, 18 Mbemba, 26 Darlow, 27 Gámez, 32 Armstrong, 42 Sterry.

Interesting see new boys Grant Hanley and Mats Selz given the nod over Chancel Mbemba and Karl Darlow. A first game as Newcastle United Captain for Jamaal Lascelles and great to see youngsters Sterry and Armstrong in the match day squad. Also of note is Daryl Janmaat in the match day squad. This puts the rumoured move away form the club to bed.

  1. Do ppl actually think we played ok last night?
Fulham were poor but were a lot better than us. If out of 10, I’d give no higher than 5. How many clear chances did we have?
Richie’s shot and a hand ball shout was about it…

I think we were poor in first half and created nowt. Midfield was set up all wrong and too negative. That said though if we got a pen and it was 1-0 to us I think that would have changed the game, did we deserve to win? No, 1-1 would have been a fairer result I think, we had a bad game to start though, Friday night on TV in London, when do we ever win those games? If we don’t beat Huddersfield at home, then I might start to worry. I don’t think we are going to win every away game this season. One of my mates who supports Hull said that every championship club expects to win at home and it’s not easy to pick up wins on the road. No way are we gonna get 100 points this time, we may have to catch up at some stage. We have 6-7 new players in team who look like they will be starting, that’s half a new team and is gonna take 6-10 games just to get gelled.

  3. What I will say is if we don’t sign a proven scorer, we’ll not finish in the top 2….
Forget Rivi and Arma scoring enough…
Perez and Gayle are lightweight who need Mitro to play off…
Mitro is still raw and unreliable to trust for a full season…

    Get a 20 goal forward, we’re 90% there

Sharples, you comparing the toon to Leicester made me chuckle mate.
We are light years away from Leicester bud.
NONE of our first 11 would get into say, for example,Stokes first team. None.
You’ve been reading the happy clappy Chronicle too much mate.

Munich – I don’t read the chronicle at all mate, and I’m not comparing Leicesters achievements with Newcastle – obviously not.

Funny you use Stoke as the example, coz Robert Huth couldn’t get into their side. Danny Simpson wasn’t wanted by us or QPR. Fuch was free or very small fee. Nobody heard of or competed for Kante. Albrighton was released by Villa and Dyer was loaned in from Swansea.
Even their star players of Vardy & Mahrez werent stars this time last season – Chelsea weren’t buying Kante for £30 odd million that’s for sure mate.

The point I’m making (as I think you probably already know) is that you can still achieve with players that are seen as average joes.

Burnley lost 5 last season, boro 9
Burnley drew v some of their bigger rivals.
We need to win most of our home games and draw a lot of the tough away games with wins v the weaker teams

We lost 4 last time in the Championship

Problem is djg no matter how we set up our midfield with different players we don’t change much tactically. We have too may defensive midfielders and only one creator, Diame…at a push shelvey.
Hanley, Colback, tiote, Anita don’t offer enough threat with shots or created chances

  8. Definitely agree about signing a proven CF. We have 4-5 maybes up front, that’s not good enough. Even Gayle is just a maybe Imo. Even though we’ve added Diame and Games, the squad seems to be a lot younger. That’s good for the future and Armstrong should stay and get chances when we’re winning etc. But time is a luxury we don’t have as we need to come straight back to the TV money.

  9. Well I’ve never been as optimistic as others. My and kim keep it real.
I think some need a good look at our forward options and who will create chances for them.

Reckon we’ll be there abouts but need a forward to say we’ll win it

.#safc fans will rejoice in #nufc’s loss tonight – not because they’re bitter but because this Rafalution hysteria has been ridiculous.

Can you honestly believe a journalist tweeted that.
Toon fans are slagged off when we don’t back the manager and accused of being hysterical when we do 🙄 # can’t win

  13. I see some of the journo’s giving it the old “worrying this” and “reality check” and “too defensive, Rafa”. Did anyone expect us to win every single game?!

We have 8 new players, a new manager in many respects and were in a different league. Everyone is going to need to adjust and hat might take a few games. I don’t see many teams coming to SJP and winning but we need to be cuter away from home and certainly learn to defend set pieces better.

The first game was always going to be difficult but it’s out of the way and the players can just get on with it now the hype has finished.

We need a right winger and a striker and I believe Diame will certainly make a difference in midfield in place of Colback.

All in all disappointed with the result but really glad the first game is out of the way.

Onwards and upwards. Nice 3-0 win next Sat will do… 🙂

  14. Kim – if he’s fit & he’s our player then Sissoko should be bloody playing.
Trouble is, will he turn up or will he be in a huff. Will he put it in, or actively avoid injury.

Kim – I would play Diame and have Sissoko on the bench personally.

The lad is creating his own hype at the moment but are there any clubs who are actually genuinely interested in buying him?!
I’m not aware of any bids so far, not even cheeky ones to test our resolve.

  21. Norwich are a very experienced Championship club with Championship players. They also have less pressure. That’s the single biggest thing we must overcome imo. We will be under the most pressure, every team we play will try that little bit harder, their fans will be up for it and we must match them. We have better players than every other club but we must match their effort. Fans also need to do the same.

Bristol City just scored, massive cheer outside my window
