Newcastle 2-1 Stoke: Lascelles strikes again to fire the Toon into the top four!

Crisis? What crisis! Yet another Jamaal Lascelles header handed us a third successive win in a battling performance against Stoke City at a packed out St.James’ .

Stoke started brightly and saw a lot of the ball in the early stages, but it was yet another spirited performance from the lads. We were organised, pressed well and created several chances – it could and should have been more comfortable than the scoreline suggested.

Atsu’s opener came out the blue, with the brilliant Matt Ritchie putting an enticing across on a plate for the Ghanaian, who couldn’t miss after arriving late at the back post.

The game should have been done and dusted before Shaqiri’s almost inevitable equaliser. Joselu spurned two big openings, whilst the Gallowgate were left perplexed by the referee’s failure to hand us a penalty after a goal-bound Christian Atsu was pretty blatantly bundled over.

Shaqiri’s strike was a bitter pill to swallow after the missed chances, but the captain soon put things right. He latched onto a Matt Ritchie corner and cannoned the ball in off the bar. The Gallowgate erupted and we hung on for yet another well earned win.

Merino was magnificent again in midfield, whilst Clark and Lascelles held the fort at the back with two strong displays. Yedlin and Mbemba did a good job to contain the tricky Jese and Shaqiri whilst Ritchie outstanding. Busy as ever and played a big part in both goals.

Joselu held the ball well on occasion but missed a few too many big chances. He could have had a hat-trick! Atsu offered us an out ball on the break and looked lively yet again, whilst Perez had one of his better afternoons with some good work on and off the ball.

Player ratings

Elliot (8) – Yedlin (7.5),  Lascelles (8.5), Clark (7), Mbemba (7) – Ritchie (9*), Hayden (7), Merino (8), Atsu (7.5) – Perez (7) – Joselu (6).

A great shift from the lads. Another big win and sign that we have more than enough to compete at this level. Get in!

  1. Ice: thanks for the advice but I was able to fix the virus.

Kimtoon: I ran a full scan on windows defender that took about an hour and a half. It found the virus and I deleted it. Then after about 5 minutes it let me close the virus and my PC is now back to normal.

There are a bunch of these scams out there. It happened to me about a year ago and I tried to contact Microsoft. Instead I got linked to some Microsoft certified bullshit artist who wanted to charge me $250 a year as a service fee to fix it. The PC I am using only cost $160 and I told them to f-off as they wanted my credit card. It is a complete scam. It took me about 3 hours to fix but even getting in touch with Microsoft certified people there are a lot of cowboys out there.

  6. What an ugly game that Spurs game was ?.

So I read an article the other day that it was Lascelles that spoke with Ashley & negotiated the players bonuses for this season.

The lad is proving to be a real captain on and off the pitch.

I have rated the lad from day one and predicted he would develop into a top CB who would one day be an England regular. I know he’s yet to be called up – but it’s only a matter of time I reckon.

With a lack of top CBs around at the mo and the likes of Van **** carrying a fee in excess of £60m – our Jamaal could be a real diamond.

Can anyone remember the days of Colo and Williamson ?

His chums at the Red Tops and Sky will still defend him. He’s blaming injuries anybody but himself. He may have a point but he brought in 14 players and they cannot all be injured. Top, top traffic decision.

Remember the tabloids were touting him for the England job before Mr. Roy got it.

Ashley also wanted him but he didn’t want to move so far North.

Martin Samuel at The Daily hateMail ghost wrote his auto biography so expect a defense from him. He has a mixed bag of a career, doing well at Spurs, relegating Southampton, probably leaving Pompey in financial ruin but winning the FA Cup, deserting QPR saying he had a bad knee.

He will not go away though. You just know he will be on the pundits couch soon. Maybe next to Jamie. Definitely at the Russia World Cup, probably next to Peytar Reid and Alan Pardew.

They just never go away. It doesn’t matter what they do and how much verbal diarrhea he spouts.

I expect him to start the next game but to be on a short leash. Rafa doesn’t suffer failure for long.

Owen on bt sport was awful at describing something that he was watching in a replay. Left me sitting there thinking ‘so what happened then?’

Meanwhile Sutton and Savage just arguing with eachother about the same point over and over again.

Eric – Luke Edwards is a *****. Nobody was expecting a complete striker for £5m. He’s 27 now so has a record that shows he’s not a 20 plus goals a season forward – you generally don’t get those for £5m.
But he does a job for the team and today he got in some great positions. He’s a striker where on a good day at least one goes in – on another day nowt goes in. But he still created those problems and got in those positions – the lad never went missing.
Top quality players get a brace or a hat trick today – but those top players have off days as well.

Eric – I have a mate who’s a Brum fan and he was worried when they brought Arry in like. He said it would either be genius or a disaster – and the club couldn’t afford it to be a disaster.
He’s spent money on buying Harlee Dean, Craig Gardner and big money (for them) on Jota. They’ve also spent money on loaning PL players like Carl Jenkinson & Sam Gallagher – plus a good chunk on hiring Arry himself. It’s money the club really haven’t got, so Arrys very short tenure has probably set that club back – unless they can bring a decent coach in to get those players going this season.

They cost 60 million as well! I was passing on what Luke Edwards said. I read his stuff and he doesn’t seem to have an agenda against NUFC, unlike a lot of journalists/pundits. The interesting bit to me was that Rafa didn’t really defend Joselu. I only saw the 1st half because the internet locked up and I got a virus from the stream.

Eric – I wasn’t having a go at you mate. I see it as an agenda towards NUFC when we have just won our third game in a row, with another very good performance but he’s writing negatively in my opinion.

You might not have seen it over there mate, but Lineker spoke to Rafa and said Shearer was getting excited watching Newcastle. Rafa joked he wished we had Shearer coz he would have defo scored some of Joselus chances today. Don’t know if that’s what Edwards is referring to or if Rafa said something in a different interview.
Either way, to be fair, Rafa couldn’t really defend some of those misses – im certainly not – the kid had a bad day. But he kept going & I praise him for that. Make up for it next week lad.

Rafa has his man management ways though doesn’t he. I remember Stevie G saying that Rafa rarely praised him – but that made him try harder looking for that praise. Maybe by not defending Joselu, he knows that the player will try harder to score next weekend to prove people wrong.

      (Quote)

  24. Sharpy: I never thought you were having a go. I usually give our players a chance until there is just no hope like with Amdy Faye. I hope Joselu can knock a couple in as confidence does wonders. Anyway, he has competition from Gayle and Mitro will be back after next week.

I am feeling comfortable that we will not be relegated and I do think Fatman will allow Rafa to spend any money the club makes. That is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow next year and I would trust Rafa to do more with the TV money than say Shaun Dyche or Ronald Koeman. He will find some good players. They may not all work out but that is never the case. Even Bobby Robson didn’t hit a home run every time, although he was close.

  25. I always find it strange that some people judge managers more on their failures than their successes. I mean, as an example 1 Christiano Ronaldo makes up for 5 Bebes or 1 Xabi Alonso makes up for 3 Ryan Babels. It may seem like I am quick to judge but I am not. It is the internet, you (I) say some things and they are not always fully thought through.

I think we can get a bit of perspective from other sports. Over here you are a super star if you can get a hit in baseball a third of the time. That means you fail 2/3rds of the time. The greatest hitter in the history of baseball, Ted Williams, only got a hit 4 times out of 10.

Joe Root just broke a record by getting 50s in 12 consecutive tests.

Football management is hard and finding the best players on a budget is hard.

Or maybe he just had a mare yesterday, he has looked useful prior to yesterday’s game , he is far more mobile than Gayle is. Let’s give the lad a chance, if he’s still fluffing chances in 4 or 5 games time then fair enough.

Really pleased with the energy levels on the park. We are playing as a team with no real reliance on individuals. Haven’t seen this in a Newcastle team for some time now. The way we pressed and shut down space was excellent. Just good ole fashioned graft.
    Happy days.

  29. Probably stating the obvious but I am liking Ritchie’s set pieces. Even if Shelvey comes back in we should have Ritchie take the corners and maybe they share the free kicks. Also, isn’t Mereno left footed, so there would be times where he might have a go. It is always good to have options.

Remember when we went like 2 years without scoring from a corner.

  30. To be fair the only real clean cut chance that Joselu missed yesterday was the one he put over the bar.
Butland made saves and the other chances weren’t ‘easy’ chances. No doubt he should’ve got at least one and it’s right he gets criticism by the way coz if it was a keeper not making saves he should’ve made, we’d be all over them for sure.

Sharpy: most of the pundits have it in for us and I do not know why. I don’t think I am being paranoid either. Thompson must be a bit thick, he knew we have Rafa and must have seen him first hand a lot at Liverpool. They also know he guided Valencia to La Liga when both Barca and Madrid had more talent. Liverpool under Rafa ran Man U close for the title when Man U had probably the best side since maybe Paisley’s Liverpool. with Souness, Hansen and Dalglish. You know, the one with Ronaldo, Tevez, a young Rooney, Scholes, Giggs, Ferdinand etc.

Kim – Rafa is one of the best tacticians in World football and will be well aware of how horrible Liverpool are at defending corners & set pieces. With Ritchie taking them & the ariel threat of Lascelles, Clark and Joselu or Mitrovic if he goes with him – it wouldn’t surprise me if Rafa sends them out to win freekicks & corners more than usual.

  35. I am telling you the pundits over here are much more balanced than on British TV. They are split about 1/3 Yanks and 2/3 Brits and don’t go courting controversy or get into hyperbole. Most are not what you would have called star players. Robbie Mustoe (ex-Boro) and Robbie Earle have a show and Warren Barton is on Champions League.

I have a theory. Part of it is that these were all solid pros but mainly that they are not part of the Liverpool/Man U/Arsenal cliques that pervade British football TV. Even Robbie Savage is ex-Man U.

I just wish they would mix it up a bit more and have fewer pundits who are obviously biased towards their former teams.

Great win again although I hate these games near the end with a slender lead. Does my head in.
The impressive thing for me is our workrate these days. I can’t remember seeing it before in black and white! All credit to the Rafa and the coaches. It was immediately noticeable to me when Shelvey came on and started aimlessly wandering about watching the ball. 4 in a row coming up?

  40. I know it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks but I think Rafa will be doing a few drills with Joselu. Try to have him not snatch at the chances because his instincts seem correct. I doubt if he will ever be prolific but his hold up and link up play is good. He could be like our Kevin Davies.

BTW, Mr. Roy is screwed. Have you seen the Palace schedule 🙂

    Man City away
    Man U away
    Chelsea home
    NUFC away

Has there ever been a club with zero points after 9 games? I know that Schteve gave it a good go with us 🙂

Everton spent nearly £150m but still didn’t replace Lukaku’s goals. That takes some doing that…

Stu – Gylfi is a top player, but you don’t spend £45m (or whatever it was) on him when you still don’t have that goal scorer in the squad.
They are really going to struggle this season I think.

  62. Everton were abysmal at Atalanta. Looked like amateurs. I think they are in trouble this season. Eric called it right.

I said maybe Rafa is losing touch with the modern game. I was wrong and hold my hands up. The Stoke win was a real signal of intent. Hoping we finish comfortably above relegation places now. Maybe 12th ish.

Many on here wrote Lascelles off though and I backed him. So at least I got something right haha.

  65. I know it’s a bit early to state that palace are doomed, But it also looks like there are 7 other teams chasing the other two relegation places, and we are 4 pts above all of them. lovely.
