In an in depth interview with The Times, it has been revealed that Liverpool striker Danny Ings had an offer to sign for Newcastle United on loan this summer, however the fit-again forward was keen to wait it out at Anfield in hope of getting his chance under Jurgen Klopp.
As we all know, Benitez was scouring the market for a new striker this summer, with unlikely moves for Lucas Perez and Divock Origi (loan) mentioned on a pretty miserable deadline day – which saw last seasons top scorer Dwight Gayle heavily linked with a shock move to Fulham.
The Times report both ourselves and Bournemouth saw attempts to sign Ings fall flat in August. A deal that may have made sense for all parties at NUFC and Liverpool, however there would’ve been real questions marks over the 25-year old’s fitness, given he’s spent the majority of the past two seasons on the sidelines.
He is yet to feature in any of Liverpool’s 7 league games so far this season, but did look sharp when I watched him make his long awaited first-team return in a Carabo Cup defeat to Leicester last month.
A player that could have been a very useful for us, but for now we’ll have to hope Joselu, Gayle and Mitrovic can do the business until January at least.
Would you have liked to see us sign Ings over the summer? Would you reignite our interest in him this winter?
