A likely theory behind Benitez’s potential talks with West Ham – a must-read for all NUFC fans

West Ham may be busting a gut to bring Rafa Benitez to the London Stadium, but I’d like to bet that the Spaniard is only entertaining their interest for one reason and one reason only – to make Ashley believe he’s serious about leaving and force him into action.

Us NUFC fans woke up to some pretty horrible news today, with Sky and various others stating that West Ham are planning a big move to activate his £6m clause and give him whatever he wants this summer.

I have absolutely no doubt that they’re interested, but I have serious doubts as to whether he’d genuinely be interested in taking that job.

They may have a few quality players he’d like to work with and could throw a bit of money his way, but when you see how he talks about NUFC, the community, the fans, the potential and what he’s spent two years trying to build, why would he swap us for a club in such a similar position?! I’d be shocked – especially given their owners aren’t much less unpredictable and erratic than Mike Ashley himself!

His future is a real concern and talk of him leaving makes me feel physically sick given his importance to this club and everything he stands for at NUFC (hope), but I’m hoping (and am quite confident) that it’s all a big ploy on Benitez’s part – make it look like you’re about to leave and Ashley will probably panic, realise what he could be about to lose and pull his finger out.

The worry is that Ashley is a massive risk taker, but he’d face a backlash like never before if Benitez left and he’d also see the value of his asset (NUFC) fall incredibly. Why would he want to oversee the mess he’d create in allowing Rafa to walk away?

Rafa is a clever man. Talks over a new deal clearly haven’t progressed quickly enough so he’s taking action. He’s not got any intention to join West Ham in my opinion, he’s just going to make it look that way in a bid to force Ashley into action.

The key for me will be how Ashley now responds to this. If he doesn’t then he’s an even bigger fool than I could have ever possibly imagined, and then, who knows that will happen with Rafa Benitez..

  1. What is this from Southgate that Shelvey is not good in the dressing room? Does anybody know if this is true? I read something from Craig Hope in The Mail saying that this is his reputation but that it is mostly that he is shy. For a Mail journalist Craig Hope is quite good in my opinion.

  2. I am pretty sure I would fall out with a few people in a PL dressing room. From what I see, and from the way the ex-players act, they often pass off bullying and ridicule as “banter”.

  3. I also think Gary Neville should apologize. He is the main Sky pundit and yet wants Ronaldo to stick it to Liverpool because it is Liverpool. The main Sky pundit should not be exhibiting such stupid and petty biases. Maybe it is tongue in cheek, but probably not. His slow brother was commentating on a game last week and spent 20 minutes going on and on about Man U. They weren’t even playing.

  4. Rafa has done best when he has taken over provincial clubs with a rabid, local and loyal fan base. Valencia, Liverpool, hopefully Newcastle. He has done OK elsewhere but was under appreciated at Madrid, Inter and Napoli. I know he is ultra-competitive and will think he would do a job at Wham but would he really want to work at the 4th or 5th best club in the city (Palace are at least on par player wise)? Sure it would be a challenge, but you also have to deal with the hoards of annoying and entitled Southern Press. He already has experience of this at Madrid and Milan.

  5. I read Neville’s remarks again and they really do belie his true feelings and biases. He has dressed them up in a bit of self parody but he is still being a c@ck.

  6. My guess is that if Fulham lose the playoff then WHam will poach their manager and also Mitro. It doesn’t make sense that Rafa would have to start again with owners that are at least as two-faced as Ashley and with a similarly under-talented squad (is that a word 🙂 ).

Have I missed something, can you point me in the direction of the source of your info that Rafa is “entertaining their interest”?

  8. Get your Trumpets, Drums and Great Escape Sheet Music out because England are very likely to get to the quarter finals of the World Cup. Why? Because they have the easiest group and then would face a team from the 2nd easiest Group in the round of 16.

England will face a team from Group H, which is:

    Poland, Senegal, Colombia and Japan

Nothing is guaranteed there but it is weaker than the other groups.

I haven’t looked at all of the permutations but if England get through it is likely to be an “heroic” exit to Germany or Brasil in the QF. Of course, they could just freeze and not get out of the group stage like in Brasil or bottle it to Japan like they did to Iceland at the Euros.

  9. As I said previously I think it will be more about what happens at NUFC rather than what West Ham can offer him. West Ham will make him promises and they will be currently worth more than Ashley’s because he’s seen him break his.

Will Rafa accept another transfer window like the last three? Will he be happy with the club to continue to be slow, unambitious and limited interest in getting better?

Personally I think it’s all about what NUFC offer and if they change. If, as is being reported they’re still not telling him his budget and he hasn’t even spoke to Jabba yet I am not confident.

  10. This is strange. The season has ended and there are only 3 football things on my mind: Rafa, The World Cup and The Champions League. I don’t care how England do but I want to see Germany/Brasil or France/Argentina.

What is strange is that I don’t give a monkeys about the FA Cup. When I was a kid I would watch the BBC coverage from the start at 11am all the way through to the ceremony. It starts at 9am in the US and I do not care if I sleep through it. I will tape it and might watch and I don’t care who wins. Well, maybe I want Chelsea to see Jose miserable, but I think Man U should be favourites.

I don’t get why Fatty doesn’t just pick up the phone and call Rafa. Tell him he’s on holyday but that him and Charnley should meet him at a suite at the Heathrow Hilton across from the terminal and they will hash it all out. Cut the ***** Brothers off at the knees. That lawyer bloke doesn’t need to be involved because he was there for a sale and that’s not happening, however much **** the Chronic want to stir about it.

He doesn’t care what effect Rafa leaving will have. He’s gambling that Rafa will stay regardless. It’s amazing how egotistical the man is. Even after failure after failure he still doesn’t think he needs to change.

  14. Stuart: I could do a NUFC budget on the back of a napkin. The main figures like wages, TV Money, Commercial and Gate money are all known as long as you assume we remain in the PL. And if you don’t assume that, then why are we even here? So just take this year’s figures and make some player sales estimates. Huzzah you have a budget!

No pissing around with offsetting future wages against this years budget because even Ashley must know that is not how accounting works.

You tell Rafa that he has to match new wages against outgoing wages and any increases get deducted from the transfer budget. But only the 1st year wage, because that is all you have to pay in the first year FFS.

You are a businessman Stuart, this makes sense, right? And it could LITERALLY be done on the back of a napkin.

Do the Chuckle brothers have an agenda here, as I am sure they are aware he will not and never has been anywhere near managing their club……I really feel for those fans in East London who like us Geordies love their club but have a Cuckoo in the nest, in fact they have 2.

My guess is they actually are struggling, this is how they ended up with Moyes, and perhaps they should ask their fans who should take over and look closer to home.

I know! I just hope he has changed that. It is more than a couple of years as well. It is usually over the length of the player contract. 6 mil a year for 5 years in Sissoko’s case. I know this because idiots on Spurs blogs were saying Levy got a great deal because if Sissoko left they wouldn’t owe NUFC any more money 🙂 The internet is a wonderful thing but it is populated by some fools.

Ice: I finally gave up on England in 2010. England were playing the Yanks and I bought a 50 inch TV and had a party for 30 people. It was supposed to be the birth of Rooney as a budding superstar and the swansong of the golden generation. It was a pile of ****. I tried to explain to Americans who didn’t follow soccer much that it was usually better than this. That’s when I threw in the towel so Southgate ignoring Shelvey came as no surprise.

Stuart mate, I have said this about 100 times on here. They know the money is coming in so get a bloody overdraft and have Ashley/MASH holdings secure it if that is necessary.

NUFC income if they stay in the PL is about as predictable as it gets. They know the TV, they get a full house, the commercial, shirt and catering deals are multi-year. They have about as stable cash flow as any business could ever has. IT IS ALL GUARANTEED MONEY. What other business has that!!!!

You don’t have to live beyond your means, just spend what is coming in and don’t be Sunderland and don’t employ Steve McClaren.

Brilliant to see the FA engaging with young people across the country in this way. The shots of Sheffield really made me smile, too

I don’t see how you can watch the @England video and not smile. That’s what it’s about. Well done @fa!

Congratulations to former City loanee Jordan Pickford and Bradford-born midfielder Fabian Delph, who previously featured in the Bantams’ youth set-up, following their call-up into the England World Cup squad.

#NUFC’s total Premier League prize money for this season has been confirmed. Eighth highest in the division…

Absolutely no reason not to back Rafa, total BS if he’s not.

  56. Shamrock: I saw that. What a ridiculous thing to say! Embarrassing actually. **** his contract, which means precisely nowt. Instead tell us about what you have promised him and why it is such a good offer that it matches his ambitions – and that is the reason why you are confident he will stay.

Spot on, Sham. So telling that it’s because they think it’s his water right contract and not his working conditions and ambitions that will keep him.

Hell of a Twitter feed that, Kim!

😆 was only meant to be the last tweet Stu, that’s all I highlighted but something obvs went wrong. 😳

  58. Hope Olly/Martin Hardy are right and it is Pellegrini. Sullivan had met with him so that makes sense and he is probably sick of the poor quality of football in China anyway. From this distance it sort of set off a panic at NUFC but will that even matter to Ashley?

English options getting fewer if this all pans out the way it looks like it will with only Leicester left. I said it before but that is a bit of a poisoned chalice as well as their owner likes to sack managers and apart from 1 magical season what have they ever done? As I said earlier, it would be perfect for Brendan because he must be as sick of playing pub teams as Pellegrini was of playing semi-pro level teams.

A decent forward and half a winger it is then 😆

Has he sold us yet ?

  60. Quote from today’s Times (sorry!) – “Moyes wanted greater control of transfers and less interference from above” funny that doesn’t at all like what Rafa would want as well!

    Replying to @LukeEdwardsTele

WHU is a parody – A club who play in a soulless athletics arena bankrolled by that wretched **** Karen Brady and her Tory cronies, in front of nauseating mockney stereotypes who moan incessantly about a desire to see football played in the ‘West Ham way’. Which is a fucking myth.

😆 don’t beat about the bush like.
