What a little birdie told me at my desk in Dubai – Third time lucky for NUFC?

So, here we are again. Another transfer window, and another takeover story hits the headlines before we so much as get a sniff of our first swoop for a colossus going cheap.

The third takeover attempt in as many transfer windows, so will it be third time lucky I wonder? Amanda Staveley got as far a having a curry with our esteemed owner, before being blown out the water (near the end of the transfer window) as being a time-waster.

Peter Kenyon managed to write an impassioned open letter to the fans with our chubby leader saying that this was his preferred buyer… Then lo and behold, he’s gone too with no money and no consortium… and another transfer window almost gone.

As many of you may know, I live and work in Dubai, but born in Benwell in the Toon many moons ago. Last Sunday, I came into the office as usual, and a colleague says to me, “well it looks like the Toon will be City’s little brother, and I guess you think it’s your birthday”. I’m a little incredulous and ask him what he’s talking about, to which he replies, “well it’s documented in Reuters, the Toon have been bought by the cousin of Sheikh Mansour”. And so, it began. (Please note this is not the ‘big reveal’ and it gets better / more believable…so keep with me).

Needless to say, I had to check it out, and sure enough, the papers are full of it, Newsnow is in overdrive, and as the days go by, there is one contradicting story after another. It’s sold, it’s not, an offer is in, no offer made…the Premier league knows, and the Premier league knows not. Same old s*** but different transfer window, so I take a big pinch of salt and keep reading. After all, we’ve been here before, haven’t we lads and lasses, but hope springs eternal as they say.

The contradicting stories continue, ho hum, but then I start to see some articles appearing here in the local press and nothing is denied by the club (which usually happens when rumours fly).

I have a small glimmer of hope. I’m probably not alone, in that I’m ever an optimist, so I’m happy to cling to hope however big or small.

Then, a few days ago I was talking to another colleague in the office. We got to chatting about football as you do, and I told him about my concerns, and he says with absolute belief and surety, “no need to worry, it’s a done deal”. He goes on to tell me his wife, who works in a very high up position in the financial district here, (this I already knew), is working on the deal, and that her company is the financial group tasked with putting the deal together for the real estate part, the stadium, etc. He insisted that it is a done deal from the buyers side for sure.

The Bin Zayed Group and Sheikh Khaled are well known and certainly have the money to do a deal of this magnitude. BZG would not come out and say the things that they have said if they didn’t believe them to be true.

And so, my optimism has increased to a level where I’m beginning to believe!

  1. Is anybody watching the build up to the CL final? The Wanda Metropolitano looks like it is in the middle of nowhere.

  2. I will say it before kickoff.

Both teams look very strong but Spurs have weak links at fullback and goalkeeper.

  3. I mean, Karius lost Liverpool the final last year as much as Ramos’ thuggery won it.

  4. 5 things I learnt in the 1st half:

    1. Imagine Dragons are shyte.

    2. Steve McManamanaman is king of stating the obvious, for example, he just said it would be bad for Spurs if they concede another before half time.

    3. They should just stop the whistling. Just stop.

    4. Liverpool have the ugliest fans in the world.

    5. Hopefully this will pick up a bit in the 2nd half. Boring so far.

  5. WTF:

They change commentators at half time? Now they have somebody called David Jones and Davis Pleat. It just goes to show that there are really too many of these pundits nowadays.

  6. Spurs will always have the cheese room.

Happy that Liverpool won because they are usually fun to watch.

  7. Of course there is the bonus of rubbing it in for Man U. The Man City treble and now the Red Bindippers winning their 6th European Cup. On top of it they have Gary Neville and Paul Scholes whining endlessly, a Manager completely out of his depth and a supposed talisman who is just a big instagramming spoilt brat.

I don’t really understand why I hate Man U and am making this about them. I just do 🙂

  8. The Chronic have confirmed that NUFC have NOT spoken to Gennaro Gattuso about the Manager’s job.

In a 200 word extended tweet Lee Ryder said – no we are not dredging the depths of what is called journalism, and The Chronic have also not contacted Eric Sykes, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kit Harrington about the job either.

No clickbate here matey, move along. We are professionals and in no way would put NUFC and Gattuso together in an article just to get clicks.

  9. Mark Douglas backed Wor Lee up, saying – as managing editor of The Chronic I can confirm that Lee is not making excuses and that I fully stand behind this excuse for a newspaper and the 27 full time ports journalists we employ, plus our intern, Chris Waugh.

No clickbaiting. Real journalism. All of the time. For the North East!

  10. When confronted by Eric Sykes about the contents of the rest of the newspaper as being a jumble of car accidents, pensioners being beaten up by ex-criminals and missing dog reports Douglas replied – no, we have stories about ex-Geordie Shore tarty girls as well.

      (Quote)

  11. Eric Sykes can also confirm that in addition to Gennaro Gattuso and those mentioned above NUFC have also not contacted the following individuals about the Manager’s job – Little Jimmy Krankie, Ed Harrison, Marco Pierre-White, Kenneth Branagh, Jimmy Nail, Boris Johnson, Virginia Wade, The Princess Royal, Postman Pat, Selma Hayek, all of the Angry Birds, Crosby-Stills-Nash, or Young, Antonio Bandaras, Anton Deck, or Sting.

  14. I have to admit that I am totally confused now. Papers were supposedly submitted to the PL in April, so why are we in June with no news.

Mark Douglas is reposting stories from The Mail and The Mirror. One says that Sheikh Khaled’s grandfather killed Sheikh Mansour’s Grandfather in 1926.How this is relevant to a NUFC takeover I have no idea. The other story is that our buyer may not want Rafa after all and might want Mourinho or Wenger.

It really doesn’t make any sense. Wenger is like71 and Jose totally lost the plot at Man U. And Rafa isn’t a cheque book manager whereas Mourinho certainly is. You would think that giving Rafa 100 million plus would be relatively cheap for the Sheikh and that Rafa would sign knowing he has a budget.

As I said, none of it makes sense but that is what you get if you publish random stories to mine clicks and don’t do any of your own fact checking.

      (Quote)

  15. At least Olly and Dubai Toon are trying to make some sense of this. The full time journalists are just totally confusing the situation as evidenced by the Mail and Mirror reports I referenced above. A lot of the stuff on here is reposts which does add to the confusion a bit but I also understand that is part and parcel for a blog and Olly and Uncle Ed need clicks to generate revenue and don’t have the resources of the papers or Sky.

I will get on my highhorse again about The Chronic. They have 7 full-time journalists reporting on NUFC as well as former players like McDonald, Rob Lee and Mick Quinn. And also John Gibson whose whole schtick is that he is in the know about everything NUFC and is/was pally with people there. Nobody seems to have a clue or any club contacts now. And they don’t seem to be doing any digging either.

Then there are the Nationals. They all have reporters with a designated North East beat. I will name and shame a few because what have any of these people told us? Craig Hope, Louise Taylor, Luke Edwards, George Caulkin. It is not like there is anything happening at Sunderland or Boro to take their attention away from Rafa’s contract and the buyout.

Sure, there is a non disclosure agreement but that doesn’t stop leaks in other walks of life. Take Politics. We usually know if Theresa May sneezes about a minute after she does it.

      (Quote)

  16. Olly: thanks for posting the Rafa interviews. It tells us a few things. We are getting information from the horse’s (Rafa’s) mouth which shows that he is in the dark about any takeover and then we can infer that the talks that took place in London more than 2 weeks ago were about a new contract and budget under Ashley.

The only other thing we know for sure is that a spokesperson for Sheikh Khaled has said a bid for NUFC was made and accepted. Why the hell Ashley just can’t come out and say that negotiations are ongoing I have no idea. OR JUST DENY IT FFS. He did it with Kenyon who turned out to be interested but didn’t have the funds.

At this point, I think we just have to assume that anything out of any journalist is just uninformed tripe. And that includes the broadsheets. One minute Khaled is Mansours half brother, then he is his cousin then his grandfather killed the other’s grandfather almost 100 year ago. It is just farcical.

Next, there is where Rafa could go. The Journos keep coming up with jobs like Marseilles, Celtic or Milan and next thing you know they are filled. Again, it is just made up ****. I think the only realistic job still open is Roma and that might change by the time I finish typing 🙂

There is certainly no other decent job open in England. Well, Sarri is off to Juve but the Chelsea fans hated Rafa.

      (Quote)

  17. Arsene Wenger is 69 years old and I think he was paid 16 million in his last year at Arsenal. Mourinho was paid about the same at Man U. I know these are rich Arabs looking at purchasing us but in what universe would they pay those 2 that amount when they can get Rafa for 6 million.

      (Quote)

  18. I had a look on Uncle Eds and he put up some tweets from NUFC “fans”. Some seemed gleeful that a takeover could fall through, that we would then lose Rafa and get relegated. I really don’t understand that attitude. Surely if you are a fan you want the best and don’t just want to wallow in self pity?

      (Quote)

  19. In an amazing new development The Chronic have actually written something useful on the takeover saga. The fact that Mark Douglas is quoting a 3rd party author adds a bit of validity. The bid seems to be genuine according to this. My only worry is Rafa’s contract and the fact that he seems to have been kept in the dark. Saying that these deals can take months from this point seems a bit of a stretch when both parties are private companies. They should have enough time to get this done one way or the other before Rafa’s contract expires.

At least it is not more shyte like we are going to hire Wenger or that Rafa is off to Celtic.

The first choice of BZG is Rafa and always has been. They were asked who else they felt would be a similar level manager or something like that and this was when the other 2 were mentioned… suddenly the gutter press twa.ts have Rafa fired and those others as first choice. These so called journalists need to just crawl back into their holes in the swamp. ??

  30. The papers are spending their time on stupid speculation and not pointing that Rafa’s options at other clubs have become more limited. As he and Ashley continue their stand off clubs are appointing Managers because they want to get a jump on training for the new season and also on transfer. There is no realistic option in England and the Italian jobs are filling up. There is really only Roma and that will probably be filled soon.

As usual, the papers are missing the big picture in their rush to put big names in their headlines to garner clicks. I don’t totally blame them for this because that is how they get paid now. However, there should be some balance and they should be looking at Rafa’s options which are very limited with or without a new owner.

  31. The papers should also be banned from letting their cyber-warriors/interns loose on Football Manager. Whether it be for transfers or selecting a whole team they just shouldn’t do it. They end up with stupid teams that show they have not watched NUFC at all this season.

It’s about bidding for contracts in regards to the NHS and getting a better chance with a FTA having it included. Only gvt can privatise the NHS. Worth noting this was also on the table with any US-EU FTA.

      (Quote)

  34. Stuart mate: I doubt you know much about the US health care system. There is the illusion of competition but mostly the contracts are bought via lobbyists and you end up with the highest drug prices in the world by far and basic care that is 3 times New Zealands. It is completely corrupt and Trump made it worse by getting rid of the benefits that were actually paid for in a private system and giving the money to his rich pals.

That said. comparing a US President to Hitler is just plain stupid.

  35. Medicare, which is a universal system for seniors, is actually the most efficient part of the system. This goes against the basic tenets of capitalism. But in a way it doesn’t because the drug and insurance companies have bought the politicians and there is only an illusion of a free market. Usually, if you have no checks on unscrupulous companies and individuals it ends up being corrupt and corrupts the idea of a free market.

Believe me, the UK doesn’t want to go near any sort of US system. They will lowball the bids at first and once embedded will put the prices up.

  36. I am going to stay away from Politics now but I do know what I am taking about with the US healthcare system. I sold policies and administered them for quite a few years. It was a smallish part of what I did but most of the time was spent explaining to small business owners like Stuart why their premiums increased by 25% every year. After a while it was more hassle than it was worth and we stopped selling it.

  37. I think we are all frustrated now. There is not only the usual made up transfer rubbish but also every journalist trying to seem smart with Rafa’s contract and any takeover. Instead of one dog chasing its tail we have 3 dogs chasing their tails. And in the case of The Chronic it is 3 Spaniels chasing their tails – the Spaniels I have met have been a bit nutty and not very bright but they do run around a lot.

      (Quote)

  38. And Mark Doulas has said he has made a load of phonecalls to his “contacts” at NUFC. Now that is the biggest lie of all, The Chronic do not have contacts at NUFC any more. If they did we wouldn’t see that 99% of their stories are pure fiction. Maybe he twittered some current players but it is obvious that they are out of the loop and most are probably on holiday.

      (Quote)

  39. Nobody knows whats happening. So far we have had:

    – BZG saying they’re going to buy it and have provided PoF.
    – The Sun sticking to their story.
    – Mark Douglas saying they’re adamant they’re buying it.
    – Lee Ryder going on about there being no offical bid (Which isn’t needed)
    – Luke Edwards treating it all with absolute distain – not believing any of it.
    – The club saying absolutely nothing.
    – Rafa still not committed to a new contract and nobody knowing whether he will or not.

All of the above says to me, nobody has a bleeding clue. I suspect we will know what’s happening by end of June. But bare this in mind – we only have 8 weeks until the transfer window closes and we might be looking for a new manager too…

      (Quote)

  40. Eric, I don’t want the US healthcare system in the UK. I actually think the NHS should be taken out of the hands of government and run by independent people with experience of business and the industry. It would be run correctly, not waste as much and couldn’t be used as a political football. i would also encourage supermarkets to have GP’s in their stores which can be booked and paid for privately for those that can afford it. That would take pressure off GP’s. I would allow people to “opt out” of the NHS usage for a reduced NI payment – only to be used in emergencies. I would also fine people for not turning up for appointments. We need to stop people turning up to A+E with a head ache or a stubbed too. They’re wasting resources and need to get out of this pathetic “well I have paid for it so I will use it” attitude.

That should go a long way towards fixing it.

That said, we the people of Britain and those who live here and pay into our system should be the ones to decide who gets to take pieces of the NHS pie. It’s bad enough that the likes of Virgin Healthcare have a vested interest along with other private companies, and yes i know that was under labours watch.
I know we are desperate for a trade deal with the US , but it cannot and should not include any of our NHS, all i ever hear from friends living in the US is how corrupt their healthcare system is. My sister in law was made bankrupt after her cancer treatment . It’s in my opinion that letting the Americans anywhere near our NHS will be a rash and costly decision. If that makes me stupid then so be it.

They only got the club because Ellis Short wanted the parachute payments and he twisted the leagues arm to push through the sale – he threatened administration if they didn’t approve the deal. Now they are selling for probably a decent profit but they never had the funds to sustain the club in the first place, especially if they stayed in the 3rd division.

This new Yank should be able to keep them afloat and might put funds in to get them promoted. Whatever we think of them, they are not a 3rd division team so there is some potential to make money by an investor.

I doubt this new guy is a white knight on a silver charger and is probably another chancer looking for a quick buck. We’ll see how it pans out but I bet the Mackems fall in love with this one as well as Stewart Donald rides off to the sunset with his saddlebags full of loot.

Your private health care will be quite limited in that you will have speedy access to a doctor and receive early treatment for minor ailments in a nice private room in a private hospital.
You will be no better off if you require treatment that a private hospital can not provide.
For example , If you require open heart surgery to replace a heart valve you will be on a hospital waiting list just like those without private health care and you certainly will not get your operation earlier.
Your private health care will not be paying and you will not be in a private hospital and the whole cost will be at the expense of the NHS.
My son lives in the USA and he pays $300 dollars per month for health insurance and has to pay 10% of any treatment. His boy needed a minor operation costing $20,000 so that cost him $2000 with his insurance company paying the balance. On top of that he has to pay $50 to see his doctor. He also has to pay $50 per month direct from his wages for Obama Care and that is deducted after tax.
I doubt you will be paying anything like that for your private health care.
There is really no need to have private health care in this Country while we have a free NHS, but God help us if the NHS is ever facing bankruptcy and has to be privatised.

  61. So, what news on NUFC? Nothing. I usually like Archie Brand’s articles but hope his Keegan suggestion was just a fleeting flight of fancy that he is over now. Wor Lee and Chris the intern seem to have developed a thriving cottage industry of interviewing themselves and saying exactly the same things they said the last time. So, nothing to see there. Olly and Ed are also chasing their tales at the moment with nothing to report and having to rehash old stories and talk about 21 year old Chelsea rejects. And I don’t mean Kenedy!

  62. There really isn’t even any transfer gossip because we don’t have a manager, budget or possibly even an owner. Not even a ridiculous link to Ruben Loftus Cheek.

  63. Sidekick – Private healthcare absolutely allows you to have surgery quicker. As an example; I had hand surgery 8 weeks ago. If I’d have gone through the NHS I don’t even think I’d have had my hand surgery by now! In fact it was 4 weeks from seeing the GP before I even got my consultant appointment date. So I decided after two weeks of waiting I’d use my private health care instead.

In the US I’m sure it’s difference is that most people have private healthcare so they probably have similar problems to what the NHS has.
