My issue isn’t selling Perez to Leicester for £30m, it’s what Mike Ashley will do with the money..

I’ll be totally honest here. I think £30m for Perez is good business and have felt for months now that he was always going to leave – whether Rafa stays or not.

There’s been claims that the fee could be £16m, but both Sky Sports, the Chronicle and BBC Radio Newcastle are saying £30m, so let’s go with that.

My issue isn’t Perez leaving for £30m – it’s a great offer and he always looked likely to leave. My issue is the fact I have ZERO faith in Mike Ashley’s ability to reinvest the money received.

He was our top scorer last season and has been one of our star men over the past few years, however, at £30m, he’s very much replaceable IF you reinvest.

The big issue here is the fact I have a good idea what Mike will do with that money received – and it won’t be to tell any new manager to go and get better with £30m.

Will it go in his piggy bank as he prepares to buy the latest high-street store on the decline? Will he sign a bargain basement replacement and keep the rest for himself? Or will he ‘reinvest’ but only give any new manager £30m provided it covers both transfer fee, agent costs and wages of Perez’s replacement?

Had Rafa stayed (and been promised £20-£30m to replace Perez) or had new owners arrived with a competent manager by their side, I’d be feeling fairly optimistic about our chances of replacing Ayoze – a player who’s supremely talented on his day, but also someone who’s shown real inconsistency in terms of his final product, involvement in games and goal return.

I’m not saying he’s not a good player and £30m is outrageous fee to be paying for him, but I think the real underlying issue here is how he’ll be replaced.

Just look at what Mike Ashley has done in the past. He sold Andy Carroll for £35m and replaced him with Shefki Kuqi. Mikel Merino left – a highly rated Spanish international with a huge future ahead of him – and he was replaced with a relegated Ki Sung-Yeung who’s career has been on the decline.

The timing of it also stinks given we’re still trying to get over Rafa’s exit, the takeover silence and the fact Rondon is now as good as gone. It comes after several bits of devastating news with not one positive in between, but the real issue here for me is my total lack of faith in a quality replacement arriving – and the same applies to Rafa and Rondon.

And that’s a HUGE worry when you consider we’d have been left on 21 points last season if you took away Rondon and Perez’s goals, not forgetting the fact Benitez gave us so much solidarity and organisation at the back.

  1. Negatives all the way at the moment. It’ll have to get better or there’ll be no club left.

At least all the Perez talk has deflected from the sight of Rafa’s halo circling his right boot.
You can’t blame the guy for leaving but this Chinese deal must have been going on for months.
Did he have to wait until the last day to announce it? That said he probably had about £2.5m after tax. Now it’s £12m . . . too much to refuse?

  2. I think the difficult thing to remember at the moment is that it was always likely Perez was leaving this summer anyway – or should I say he’s been saying he wanted to – actually he was saying he’d like to return to Spain, but what people say and what people do doesn’t seem to matter.

I think £30m is a decent fee when you consider we got Almiron for £25m just in January.

My concern is also the reinvestment of funds, but it’s more than that just now.

My biggest concern about allowing this deal to happen right now and so publicly is the added negativity it brings to the club.

Fans angered at the way the Rafa situation played out, selling Perez, the takeover looking less likely every day – all of these things must be making the decent managers think twice.
If you were Martinez would you leave Belgium?. If you were Arteta would you leave City – for the current NUFC situation I mean.
However, if you are Moyes or Monk and currently out of work?!.

It’s the timing of the deal that bothers me more than the deal itself for me.

Who will be next seems to be a fire sale get rid of whoever he can make money on in regard to players, keep, all, the money still demand 350M when he will have sold off all the assets and no time to replace them if we get new owner and he will then keep, the deadwood that we farmed out on loan and cannot sell who are not premier league standard. If he is selling the club this is his last chance to stick it to the fans

Who would take this job? Pardew? Fry? Atkinson? Bassatt?

  6. There’s two different questions to be asked.
Would you like to manage NUFC? Yes, yes all the way.
Would you work for Mike Ashley?

That’s what we’re looking at. Who would want the job when someone like Rafa couldn’t handle it? All the serial failures would come and that’s probably what will happen. Ashley will panic and appoint someone who’s sole brief will be avoiding relegation. Step forward Tony Pulis.

  8. Nobody seems to have mentioned the fact that we got £30m for Perez shows the challenge the club will have now to buy any players. He ain’t worth anywhere near that but we go it. What are the chances of our club being up to date with the current transfer prices? No chance.

There’s now so much to do for us in such a short space of time I find it inconceivable that we won’t be in a relegation battle and lose.

Ice – I saw that tweet from Ryder. If that’s the case, why have the Chronicle not written that before now?!?!!!!.
Ryder is a joke in my opinion. The Chronicle have ran plenty of stories about the takeover – but not one that I’ve seen that no offer has been made – until this tweet from Ryder.

I have no faith in anything the Chronicle or it’s journos said personally.

Joey Barton said if he was offered the NUFC job now it would be too good to turn down.

  26. One thing I will say about Nolan’s interview though is that he’s right about Ashley being the same now as he has always been.

He made them an offer on bonuses and said take it or leave.

He’s also right that Rafa would have known what he was getting with Ashley from day 1.

But for him to say he feels sorry for Ashley is BS. If Ashley was so desperate to sell, he would do the right things to get the deal through.

Is it even realistic to believe that every buyer who ahs shown an interest in the club have never had the money? He briefs he never recieves bids and buyers don’t have the money. How is this possible? Why are journalists not investigating Ashley and his false attempts at selling? Why aren’t they getting the truth and splashing it over the papers? He is clearly making it impossible for a buyer to buy.

  40. Stu, we know it’s all BS about wanting to sell, just need the fifty odd thousand who frequent SJP to wise up and walk away.
Short term pain long term gain.
It’s nothing to do with him losing money as he already has ST cash but more about losing face, more importantly, Sky will hate empty stadium all over their broadcast, they would be forced to explain it to the watching audience . We would soon see a drop off in our games being broadcast if a boycott was sustained and that means less exposure for SD.

He has to be made to go, not encouraged to rip off the fans and take the ****.

What i cannot get my head around is why would Stavely, Keynon and BZG, go to the bother of very expensive due diligence and involvement of lawyers if they have no funds ? I would never go to that trouble for a house i knew i couldn’t afford.
They must of been given encouragement to proceed and that makes me think that Mike just sits back watches them spend money whilst enjoying the exposure the club and by association SD get during the summer when there are no games on to expose SD globally. All very convenient and all he has to do is move the goalpost late on to scupper the deal. It’s a fanciful theory i know, but we are dealing with a proven liar and completely duplicitous character here.

Just to stand still we need two strikers (three if Joselu goes), a centre mid, a winger and a left back. Chances are that will cost more than what we have available but also the club will continue their nonsensical transfer policy of having a price and sticking to it. Even if it means missing out on a player fior the sake of £1m.

We will be relegated this season if Jabba is still here.

This is what infuriates me mate as well. It’s highly unlikely that the last 3 consortiums trying to buy us all failed to provide funds. As i said earlier , you don’t try to buy something and spend lots of cash on something you know full well you can’t afford.
Example, i spent £2,500 on fees and surveyor for a bungalow i knew i could afford. After 16 weeks with an extremely annoying seller and at the point of exchange she asked for another £10,000 !
now i had the money but withdrew on principle. It cost me a lot but i don’t regret it, i wouldn’t be mugged off, she gambled on my desperation and lost a willing buyer.
I believe this is happening to BZG on a much bigger scale obviously, question is, what are they prepared to put up with.
Ofcourse they could be as Liverpool deemed them ” time wasters ” but they are going to look really bad if two clubs end up calling them out for same thing.

With regards to Rafa – I know I may be on my own here, but now the dust has settled a bit, I’m interested again.
Rafas way was certainly effective, and he done a brilliant job under the circumstances. But I have to say, for a large period under him, I didn’t enjoy watching us.
I understand all of the reasons people are going to throw at me now – and I get them. But I still didn’t enjoy the football.

Now, if someone like say Martinez came in and played a more attacking style and we finished 15th instead of 14th – but I felt more entertained ??‍♂️.
For clarity, I want more than 15th – but we all know under Ashley that we aren’t competing where we’d all like to see us.
