Keith Downie has urged Newcastle to make a move for Rangers star Alfredo Morelos – believing the Colombian hitman is ‘readymade’ for the Premier League.
The 23-year-old has been tentatively linked with a move to St James’ Park this month and comes highly recommended from Sky Sports correspondent for the north-east, with Downie also feeling we could sign him around the £20m mark.
Speaking to The Magpie Channel, here’s what he had to say about Morelos – a player he believes would be a perfect fit in Steve Bruce’s goal shy side:
“The guy I think Newcastle should sign is Morelos from Rangers.
“He’s unbelievable. He’s readymade for the Premier League.
“They’d probably get him for about £20m – Newcastle can afford that.
“I’ve watched him a number of times this season. He’s got his temperament pretty much sorted out.
“He could play up front on his own in that Newcastle formation easily. He can take three defenders out of the game.
“He’s very similar to Rondon. He likes the contact and a battle with defenders and I think he’d work perfectly in that formation.
“I honestly think that is exactly who Newcastle should be going for.
“Whether Steve Bruce and the hierarchy rate him as much as that I don’t know, but the one thing I would say is I don’t think Rangers would sell him in January, they’ll probably need to wait until the end of the season.
“But having watched him a number of times, I honestly think he’s readymade for the Premier League.”
This comes a few days on from his transfer update on Twitter, with the Sky Sports reporter backing us to ‘definitely’ bring in ‘two or three’ signings over the coming weeks:
As for Morelos, he’d be a risk but one I’d love to see us take.
He’s been involved in 104 goals in 126 appearances for Rangers – being prolific in league, cup and European competitions – and is clearly too good for the SPL.
That said, will Mike Ashley spend big on another unproven young striker anytime soon? And would Ibrox chiefs dare sell to the infamous NUFC owner given the history between himself and Rangers?
