According to US reporter Kristian Dyer, Newcastle United are a ‘club to watch’ this summer with regards to a move for USMNT star Weston McKennie.
He claims the Schalke star, who has recently played alongside Nabil Bentaleb in Germany, has received strong interest from several Premier League and Bundesliga sides, but hints that he may end up at St James’ Park this summer.
This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with a move for the highly-rated 21-year-old, who Schalke may be reluctantly forced to sell this summer due to ‘financial constraints’.
Dyer claims that Schalke’s valuation is around $30m (£23m), although the club may well be able to force through a deal at a discounted price given impact COVID-19 has had on our budget and other clubs need to sell.
That said, can we afford to spend around £20m on a midfielder if our budget really is around ‘£35m plus player sales’? After all, the signing of a proven goal scorer must be top of the agenda and won’t come cheap.
As for McKennie himself, he’s a versatile midfielder who’s already racked up 91 games for Schalke and 19 caps for the USA national team – scoring six goals in the process.
Could this be the Schalke midfielder we end up signing this summer instead of Nabil Bentaleb? We shall see…
