A spokesman for Henry Mauriss has provided an update on the US businessman’s plans following claims he’s ready to step up his bid to buy Newcastle United.
This ‘source close’ to the California-based media mogul claims he is ‘totally focused’ on completing a takeover, but insists that it’s ‘not his style’ to have it play out in public (seems a little ironic when someone is allowing things to do exactly that on his behalf here?!).
Here’s what they had to say on Mauriss’ behalf when speaking to The Mirror, claiming his interest is genuine following a round of talks with Mike Ashley last year:
“Henry is still interested in buying and is totally focused about trying to get a deal done.
“But it won’t be played out in public – that’s not his style.
“He has been watching developments and having discussions with his advisors.
“Mike Ashley and his lawyers are aware of Henry’s interest as they had discussions in December.
“Henry is genuinely interested in buying Newcastle.
“He’s a strategist.
“He’s been studying other Premier League clubs and making plans.
“Let’s see.”
The 56-year-old is believed to have been ‘waiting in the wings’ for months, however it’s now time for him to put up or shut up following the Saudis decision to walk away from the £300m deal on Thursday.
One of my concerns is the lack of knowledge we have on Mauriss. Who really is he? What backers does he have? What are his plans and just how much money does he have behind him?
The Mirror insist that ‘those around him’ believe he has the necessary funds in place to buy the club, but choses to remain private and has ‘refused requests to outline his plans, preferring to keep a low profile’ instead.
You can’t help but fear we’ve been promised a Sunday roast with all the trimming, only to be left with a ham sandwich.
Time will tell, however it’s not hard to see why us NUFC fans are struggling to get too excited about this one, in more ways than one!
