Newcastle beat Leeds, West Ham & Chelsea to the signing of England youth international – Report

The Telegraph have revealed that Newcastle United are all set to sign former RB Leipzig youngster Matthew Bondswell on a free transfer.

Mike McGrath’s ‘exclusive’ claims we have beaten both Leeds and West Ham to the 18-year-old’s signature, with Chelsea also expressing an interesting following a series of scouting missions.

The England U18 international has recently been released by Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and is reportedly keen on a return to his home country following an 18 month spell in Germany.

Bondswell is a highly rated left back who has represented England at U15, U16, U17 and U18 level, with him previously graduating from Nottingham Forest’s academy.

A deal for a top prospect would be seen as a small coup for Steve Bruce, who has turned to our academy in recent times by handing debuts to Matty Longstaff and Elliot Anderson.

The Telegraph report that he will train with the U23’s and start life on Tyneside with the second string, but is someone who ‘will provide cover’ if the likes of Lewis, Dummett or Ritchie suffer injuries over the next two months.

One to watch over the coming year or two!
