A very limited season for the Magpies

With only 7 games left to play this season, Newcastle United is stuck in the second half of the table, in 17th place. As a reminder, last year the team finished 13th. The hope of climbing up the table seems rather low as the team will have to face Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool who are technically better. However, we can hope that the team will stay in this position.

The losing streak begins on day 13, with a heavy defeat against Leeds. However, the players didn’t play badly. Newcastle went in front after 26 minutes as Jeff Hendrick fired in at the back post. This was followed by a long series of defeats and draws in almost every game, with the exception of games against Crystal Palace (2-0), West Bromwich (2-1), Everton (2-0), Southampton (3-2) and recently Burnley (2-1).

The best game for the black and whites was the one against Tottenham Spurs (2-2), which was played without Gareth Bale and Heung-min Son. Newcastle played well against Tottenham, who was struggling in the game. The Magpies took the lead thanks to a goal from Joelinton, following a gross error of Davinson Sanchez. Hugo Lloris made a magnificent double save from Dwight Gayle. First he kept out the striker’s header before deflecting his close-range shot onto his post and catching the ball before it crossed the line in the nineteenth minute.

During this season, the Magpies fall to an average of 1.03 goals per game. On the attacking side, they have taken 318 shots but with an accuracy of only 34%. On the defensive side, they made 426 tackles, more than half of them successful. There were 303 interceptions and 706 clearances of which 167 made by Ciran Clark. Allan Saint-Maximin is the team’s most outstanding player, with 24 dribbles and 4 assists. Go here to find all the detailed statistics of your favourite team.

  1. 7 games to go, 17th in the table? when was this written, granted not much has changed, 16th and 5 games to go, but sloppy.
