Toon flop now in line to face Lionel Messi in first game for star-studded PSG tonight

Former Newcastle United flop Matz Sels looks set to be the first man tasked to keep Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar at bay on tonight.

Shockwaves were sent throughout the footballing world this week when Argentine superstar and six-time Ballon d’or winner Lionel Messi completed his move to French giants PSG.

With Gianluigi Donnaruma, Sergio Ramos and Gini Wijnaldum already moving to Paris this summer, the Qatari-owned football club are already many peoples firm favourites for the Champions League title this season.

PSG’s next fixture is this evening; an 8pm kick-off on home soil against Strasbourg…and former Toon failure Matz Sels is their goalkeeper!

Belgian Sels was signed by Rafa Benitez ahead of our Championship-winning season in 2016/17, but made just nine league appearances before being dropped for the more consistent Karl Darlow.

He never regained the trust of Rafa after a last-minute howler at Villa Park in September 2016, and was shipped out of Tyneside completely in 2018.

If Messi does make his debut for PSG on tonight, I could think of a million places I’d rather be than in Matz Sels shoes for those 90 minutes!
