Odds to become next NUFC manager take fresh twist as Journalist claims “it won’t be Fonseca”

Speaking on the latest Pod on the Tyne podcast for The Athletic, George Caulkin had this to say on Newcastle’s hunt for a new manager:

“I have been told that it won’t be Fonseca; I’ve been told that now, a couple of times, but I’m not saying that as a definitive thing.”

The former Roma boss had seen his odds drop to as little as 8/15 at one stage last week, and this is the first time since then that he is no longer odds on to become the new Newcastle United manager with the bookies.

Fonseca is still the 2/1 ‘favourite’ with Sky Bet, but it’s interesting to see that Lucien Favre’s odds have shortened considerably over the past 24 hours, with him now priced at 7/2.

The Mail’s Craig Hope stated last Friday that one of Favre, Emery and/or Martinez would emerge as a ‘serious contender’ this week – despite all roads pointing to Fonseca at the time – and it seems he might be right?

The former Borussia Dortmund boss is available and has a solid track record when it comes to turning things around at a struggling team. Borussia Moenchengladbach were seven points adrift from safety when he arrived in 2011, picking up just 16 points from their opening 22 games, yet he kept them up and had them qualifying for the Champions League the following season.

Here’s the latest odds via Sky Bet:

  1. Paulo Fonseca – 2/1
  2. Lucien Favre – 7/2
  3. Roberto Martinez – 9/1
  4. Frank Lampard – 14/1
  5. Steven Gerrard – 14/1
  6. Eddie Howe – 16/1
  7. Rafa Benitez – 16/1
  8. Erik ten Hag – 20/1
  9. Unai Emery – 20/1
  10. Graeem Jones – 25/1

It just shows what a complete t055er Caulkin is.
He’s claiming he’s in the know but even he himself says we should not believe him.

  2. There’s a lot of talk about a DOF it makes sense that person would be in place before any manager is appointed. Conte would be the ideal candidate but the mess Ashley left behind and utd job been available is making him delay. Id give it to Jones and leave Overmars get his feet under the table and look to make a proper long term appointment in the summer when alot more choice and better quality of manager will be available. Nufc before M.A were always a soft touch in the t.market, got roasted many many times. The structures have to be right from the top down to make sure nufc are big players going forward and not rich push overs to be taken advantage of.

  4. With all the boasting about available money, this takeover is looking as if the Saudis are not really willing to spend, We really need a star too interest other decent players , perhaps a free agent being as time moves on the closer we will become to relegation, our present side is relegation bound and has to be re-enforced.As for three signings during the winter window, in fact we need at least half a dozen or we will start the following season in the second tier, being Ashley has let us with the barest of bones for a club.

  5. Would like to see Martinez works well with Jones knows the prem and needs a fresh challenge after taking Belgium as far as he can ,if we have to wait then Jones can take it for now ,rather than going all out straight away with blockbuster signings this is going to take time so we need a man with prem experience
