We Are The Geordies. That phrase has been in my mind since I was a kid, but it’s now become a huge part of my life.
I sang it for years, at St. James’ Park and at grounds around the country, then I found myself featuring in the movie We Are The Geordies, which came out in December 2020. My life has changed as a result. I have more confidence, have done many Mental Health talks and publications for the Newcastle Foundation & have become a volunteer for WE Foodbank as well as collecting for NUFC Fans Foodbank before every match.
It’s a privilege to be a part of and I decided I wanted to do more to raise money and awareness of the need for foodbanks, having personally witnessed the dire living situations far too many people have to endure.
The idea I had was to write a new song and, of course, it had to be called ‘We Are The Geordies!’
I’ve been a musician for most of my life, although my disability has prevented me from playing live for a number of years. I’m definitely not a singer, but decided I’d do everything myself and sing in my Geordie accent as if I was at the match. The song is about the players from past to present, but the choruses are about the fans.
As I wrote the song, I thought that it would be great if I could get as many Newcastle United fans, from all over the world, to sing along with me on the chorus and be a part of something that will hopefully be played at SJP long after we’ve all gone. That idea sends a shiver up my spine & pushed me to find a way to achieve it.
I’ve set up a designated email address: [email protected].
So, fans can send me an email, then I’ll reply with the lyrics and chorus, just the basic voice and melody.
Then I want you to listen with headphones and record yourself singing, shouting, chanting, or talking, along with the song. Then email your voice back to me.
I only want your voices, hence the need for headphones. Then I’ll put each voice into the song. I’m aiming for 52,000 voices!
I’ve also created a simple YouTube video, with the lyrics, tune & instructions.
I would love it, as someone else once said, if you could all get involved and get your friends & family to do it as well!
100% of all profits will go to NUFC Fans Foodbank and I’m hoping this will be really successful to raise as much money as possible.
Thanks very much for your support & I look forward to hearing from you all very soon.
Best wishes,
Davy Craig

And BTW, there is probably a reason why “we are the geordies” is cheerful, because it is based on:
“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,
You make me happy when shies are grey,
You’ll never know dear how much I love you,
Please don’t take my sunshine away.”
