Newcastle 1-0 Aston Villa: Towering Dan Burn debut helps Toon to another huge win

Three wins on the trot and two in a week at St James’ Park. Feels good, doesn’t it!?

After blowing Everton away in that second half on Tuesday night, we had to show guts, organisation and real hard work to hold on in this one, putting in a superb defensive display to keep out an Aston Villa side who huffed and puffed to no avail.

The result takes us FOUR clear of third bottom Norwich, five ahead of Watford (19th), seven points clear of bottom of the table Burnley – who lost at home to Liverpool today – and leaves us just three behind an out of sorts Brentford who’ve played two games more than us.

Eddie Howe was forced to make two changes for this one, seeing Dan Burn and Javier Manquillo replace an ill Jamaal Lascelles and ineligible Matt Targett.

The match winning moment arrived from who else but Kieran Trippier. After passing a late fitness test, he not only kept Digne and Coutinho quiet in the first half but scored that all important goal before hobbling off with an injury soon after the restart.

That is a concern – especially as he’s been spotted on crutches since – however we can take heart from the way we ground out the win in his absence.

A special mention must go to Burn. The Geordie defender is a giant, but his presence on the pitch today was even bigger today, with him barely putting a foot wrong all afternoon as he bullied Watkins, read the play superbly and brought an air of calm to our back four.

We looked so much fitter and a side filled with confidence and belief that we CAN no see out games after taking the lead. Where we bottled it against Watford last month, we have showed our metal in the way we’ve seen out victories against Everton and Villa this week.

Krafth did little wrong after replacing him, Fraser was tireless, Joelinton a man mountain in the middle, while the likes of Schar and Shelvey continue to look like two players finally adding consistency to their games.

Although he had his moments, today also proved that we don’t completely rely on Allan Saint-Maximin to wins games. He had a quiet second half and didn’t always do enough to help out Paul Dummett – who came on after an injury to Manquillo – but we still managed to keep the likes of Coutinho, Watkins, Ings and Buendia at bay.

Aside from the Watkins goal that was disallowed by VAR after a lengthy check, it never actually felt like they were about to score. Considering we’ve been a side that couldn’t keep a clean sheet or protect a lead for love nor money this season, it says a lot that Dubravka had so little to do.

Another great atmosphere, another outstanding effort, another game that’s seen Eddie Howe outsmart a fellow young English manager and another huge step towards Premier League safety.

Next up, a trip to West Ham in next Saturday’s early kick off!

STARTING 11: Dubravka – Trippier, Schar, Burn, Manquillo – Shelvey, Willock, Joelinton – Fraser, Wood, Saint-Maximin.

SUBS: Darlow, Dummett, Krafth, Murphy, Almiron, Gayle, Longstaff, Bruno, De Bolle.

  1. As I have said before. I really sont believe the transformation in JoeLinton in the last 10 games.

  2. And Prem: my description of Refs as being overweight, slow and old is not really meant to be funny, it is meant to be descriptive. And meant to show the PL do not know what they are doing. UEFA retire Refs at 45. Mike Dean is soon to be 54.

What do you think, Prem? Am I NEITHER, NOR correct?

    No probs, Sharpy mate 🙂

  8. Burn was unquestionably man of the match today – considering it was his debut and in for the club captain, his performance was so commanding!!.
I said pre kick off that we needed him to be just that and he did not let us down one bit.
The atmosphere was outstanding again & he must have been buzzing off that – finally playing for his home town club with all his family there I dare bet.

But I want to mention our midfield as well. 3 players who have struggled this season & each came in for criticism at different stages.

All 3 were outstanding again today against a very good Villa midfield. They bossed that midfield which was what won us the game imo.

The transformation in those 3 players alone under Howe is prime example of just how better we are since he’s come in & dare I say is going to make it difficult to get Bruno in the side – would it be fair to drop any of them on current performances???.

  9. Sharpy: McGinn is a good player and Coutinho disappeared, so I thought our midfield did well, as you say.

  10. I really am still in disbelief at the change in Big Joe in the last 10 games.

I am watching the game on TV and seeing a different player. It is sort of amazing.

  11. I was pretty excited about this game. Went to bed at midnight-ish and woke up at 5am for an 8am game in the States. I have to admit I had a few too many last night so if I offended Olly, I am sorry.

I thought we would win, and it would drag ourselves close to safety.

Mackems drew. But they are meaningless to us now 🙂 like watching snails eat lettuce. Boring!

Sharpy: McGinn is a good player and Coutinho disappeared, so I thought our midfield did well, as you say.

Eric – McGinn is a good player but his biggest attribute is he is industrious, he covers so much ground. Luiz is a really tenacious player. Ramsey is developing into a very tidy player & will only get better under Gerrard I reckon – and Courtinho can be a game winner with either a goal or assist.

I felt our boys not only matched them today but dominated them for large parts.

You are dead right about Joelinton – which largely came about thanks to Clarke getting sent off against Norwich really.
But I’ve not see Jonjo work as hard as he is EVER really. I’d love to know his running stats over the last 4 or 5 games but I bet it’s well up on previous games – it definitely feels like he’s covering more ground & doing more of the ugly stuff.
Same with Willock – it felt like he was everywhere on that pitch today.

I know Willock will inevitably get judged against his goals record last season – but that was an enigma really. We could do with him chipping in with a few this season – but he’s definitely performing how we need him to in this team.

Those 3 putting the graft in the way they are allows ASM the freedom to do his thing & Fraser has developed such a good partnership with Trippier already.

  13. I only managed to watch the second half, but we were under the cosh for a large chunk and were lucky to have their goal disallowed. Dummett was exposed by ASM not tracking back.

The midfield three may have bossed the midfield in the first half, but Villa did well in the second.

What impressed me was that we didn’t drop points from a winning position. The tenacity was there to see.

First half was better midfield. We had both fullbacks go off in the 2nd half which hurt us a bit. Even in midfield as we were pushing forward on the wings before that.

There is criticism of ASM on the Net, but he cant be Maradona every game.

I like it now that we have other players who can do things. Like Willock.

And we havent even seen BRUNO!!!! Imagine!!! if he is as good as we think he might be and added to this team.

I am very happy about the way things are going.

  18. I have predicted wins for each of the last 3 games.

Nobody thought we would win at Leeds. If you watched any youtube NUFC shows it was all doom and gloom and 3-nil losses.

None of them thought we would beat Villa either!

    I did.

      (Quote)

  19. Gary Neville talking on the Sky podcast after the game last night – I’ve always thought he’s talked sense when it comes to NUFC and he was loving our transformation yesterday.
He was asked what the change has been and inevitably said the new owners & signings – and they obviously have. But for me the biggest reason for our change is down to Edward John Frank Howe.

He has motivated & improved players who week in week out looked dejected & out of love with the game.
We defend better, we work harder & we attack with intent – that is done on the training pitch.

We had 1 win all season – we were down and out, I honestly believed that.

But we have just beaten Leeds, Everton & Aston Villa – scoring 5 goals and conceding only 1. That’s without our main centre forward & with a defence that prior to these 3 games, only Norwich had conceded more goals than us.

The reason I post this is watching Neville last night made me realise that Howes achievements will likely be overlooked because of the new owners & the money spent – and I think that’s unfair. He’s done a brilliant job so far – long may it continue.

  23. My guess is that we will see a lot of hand wringing and predictions of a loss against West Ham from fans and pundits alike. WHam are a decent side but I think 4th flatters them and they are only there because of the inconsistencies of Spurs, Arsenal and Man U. In a normal year they would be upper mid-table which is about where their current squad should be.

    Their last league games are:

    Draw 2-2 at Leicester

Win 1-0 at home to Watford

Loss 1-0 away to Man U

    Loss at home to Leeds

They havent exactly been playing the form teams in the PL and still only have 4 points from 12.

    1. Simon Jordan thinks he knows everything about everything.

    2. They have an ad for a country live tour with Ray Parlour and Alan Brazil. Who would pay good money to see them 2?

    3. What am I watching talksport at 6.30 am for 🙂

  26. In my own defense, Talksport is in the background as I do other things. My main reason for listening is to see if 2 of our biggest critics – Danny Murphy and Rent-a-Gob Jordan – pay some grudging respect to Eddie Howe and NUFC. The “Friends of Frank” would be shouting from the rooftops if Everton had won 3 in a row,

  28. West Ham have won 5 of their last 14 PL games. Let’s put that in perspective. It is 36%. Brucie won around 30% of his PL games and he is the worst performing Manager in PL history.

      (Quote)

  29. So, in summary, Wham have 4 points from their last 12 and have won 5 in 14. But you will see this week that it will be an impossible task for NUFC to get anything at whatever their new stadium is called. “London Stadium”? I really dont understand how the hell they are 4th. I have watched a few of their games and they havent been very good.

      (Quote)

  30. If Trippier is out for the next 5 games:

    West Ham
    Brentford
    Brighton
    Chelsea
    Palace

I still believe we can pick up 6-8 points from those games. I certainly think we could/should be taking all 3 points from Brentford & Palace.

I think as little as 34 points will secure PL status this season – I don’t see it being much more than that.

      (Quote)

  31. Eddie said Manquillo has “ligament damage”. That usually means a couple of months out. Again, I am not a Dr., but I have followed enough football to know the code for long term absences.

So, it is probably Krafth who I cannot decide if he is any good or not. Probably better than playing Murphy or Fraser out of position though. The rest of the defense looks like it will be OK with Dummett and Burn fit.

Not sure about Lascelles. Saying he had an “illness” usually means Covid. However, I am staying off the Jamaal bandwagon that some NUFC fans seem to have climbed aboard after he had 2 good halves of football. He has been our worst player this season.

      (Quote)

  32. Eric+Sykes: . But you will see this week that it will be an impossible task for NUFC to get anything at whatever their new stadium is called.

Unsurprisingly It’s already started .. jenas dripping on about how we’re doomed without trippier today

      (Quote)

  33. Of our entire remaining fixtures I think we could realistically get another 12-15 points.

We have an awful set of fixtures beyond those next 5 and points are going to be really hard to come by – maybe only Norwich and Burnley being chances to take maximum points – and even those won’t be easy earned as they are also fighting for their lives.

      (Quote)

  34. I reckon Tripps will be back before Manquillo. Whenever they say LIGAMENT that usually means a minimum of 2 months out.

      (Quote)

  35. I think Krafth with Fraser in front of him will do ok – largely thanks to Frasers work rate, though I do think there has been improvement with Krafth.

I must say I’ve had sympathy for Krafth & Lewis actually. Our defence has been awful before & since they were brought in. Then there has been so much change between a back 4 and 5 – Krafth being used as a wing back, right back and right sided CB and never really getting a run in the team – similarly with Lewis being used as a LB and wing back without getting a decent crack at it.

But going back to Krafth. I think him right & Targett left will do just fine.

However any more injuries & Howe may have to consider going back to those 3 CBs – only because I think Fraser or Murphy could be used short term as wing backs if absolutely needed.

      (Quote)

  36. I dont understand the love for Jenas. I listened to him on BBC podcasts and he talked a good game but what he said was total w@nk, just like when he played I never understood what he did. Bobbly Robson played him at NUFC and I could never figure out why. I think he also has over 30 England caps and that made no sense to me.

I watched England play USA in a friendly in Chicago. I was excited because there was a NUFC player and it was Jenas. He was the worst player on the pitch by a million miles and the USA squad was not that great. I just dont get this love of Jenas as a player or a pundit.

      (Quote)

  37. Well the latest craic is Manq might not be as bad as first feared – hopefully he’ll not be out too long.

I still think we use Krafth and take no unnecessary risks with Manquillo. If he’s fit then play him back if he’s anything less than 80/90% fit then go with Krafth.

If we are sensible with managing injuries, then I think we get those 12-15 points we need to stay up.

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy: the initial diagnosis was ligament damage. I hope they jumped the gun on that because ligament damage is always a slow recovery.

We know what our doctors are like as well. They never tell you anything. Dummett was out for ages when they said it was a muscle pull. Fernandez? Who knows? Lewis? Eddie said he has been carrying a groin injury for a year. St Max was out for 10 weeks with Covid and they told us nowt.

      (Quote)

  39. I always get scared when I hear the word LIGAMENT. It has cut so many careers short- Tony Green, Brian Clough, Supermac to name a few. I know surgery is better now though and there are different degrees. But every time I hear that word I fear the worst.

  40. I checked West Ham’s team and they really dont have a very good defense. I dont rate Fabianski either. Their defense is:

    Fabianski

    Cresswell Zouma Dawson Coufal

Cresswell and Dawson wouldnt get anywhere near our team. Their defense needs Rice and Soucek to shield it so I think we should get at them.

ASM to be MOTM against their fullbacks. Hope that we have a decent Ref because WHams tactics are just to kick him.

      (Quote)

  41. West Ham have some players that can hurt you, but they are not a CL team.

There is Rice. Soucal from corners, Antonio and Sharpy’s Jarrod Bowen. They are upper mid-table, as I have said before. I think they will finish 7th or 8th.

Seriously, I am not crapping myself about playing them. I think Villa are on their level and we did OK on Sunday.

      (Quote)

  42. Eric – I think Diop will be in for Zouma. I think WH will give Zouma a few weeks out the spotlight.
That still is in our favour though as I think Zouma is the better of the 2.

I still think they are a good defensive side though – particularly at set pieces (both defending & scoring themselves from them).
Having Rice and Soucek certainly helps.
I like that he’s now become my Jarrod Bowen ?, I wish that came with some kind of financial gain ?.
I have to be honest though, while I thought he could make the step up, he’s even better than I thought.

What I love about our football at the moment is Howe has them playing with no fear. There is no chance we will go there and park the bus – that immediately gives Moyes something to think about.

It’s just about getting points on the board now. If we get a point I’d take it now. In fact if someone offered boring nil/nil draws for the rest of our games I’d take it in a heartbeat coz I think that would keep us up.

I know that sounds negative, but While we are improving I still don’t think we have the players to go into games feeling confident of getting a result – we are 5 games unbeaten now – maybe in 5 games time I may be more confident.

      (Quote)

  43. KIMTOON:
We will massively miss Tripps and if Manquillo is long term out too then it’s a big problem .

Kim – we will certainly miss Trippier. He has been brilliant since coming in – not just his performances but the mentality he has brought into the side. So many pundits said he came for a pay day – well he’s not playing that way. He’s almost single handedly pulled the teams mentality to where it’s needed to be.
You are usually get that with a new manager, but it didn’t really happen when Howe came in – it certainly has since Tripp got on that pitch.

I’m still hopeful though, because what I saw from Burn at the weekend was that same mentality. He may not have the same weight as Tripp, but he kept that defensive organisation when Tripp went off.

We will be weakened without Tripp and Manquillo, but Krafth did ok when he came on – and he has something to play for now he has this opportunity. He either gets to show Howe he has a future at Newcastle, or he knows he’s surplus to requirements & is playing in the shop window for a move.

      (Quote)

  44. With Tripps & Manqs injuries & De Bolle being on the bench at the weekend, I got thinking about our squad & which players still might have a role to play this season.

The likes of Dummett & Murphy will be regular used subs I reckon and maybe Almiron. I think Almiron will be working on a move for next season & im fine with that.

But Gayle will continue to confuse me. He hasn’t featured under Rafa, Bruce or Howe now – nor has he been moved on (either on sold or on loan). The lad can score, especially in the championship – which is still a good standard. So it baffles me that he’s seeing his career out on our bench & never getting game time.

CB wise – only Clark is fit at the moment. The less said about him the better. He & Fede will be gone in the summer & I expect that position to see real improvement.

Midfield – Longstaff will only get in if there are injuries. I expect him, Hayden & Hendrick to go in the summer. I think Hayden has wanted a move South for a while now so it may work for everyone that one.

Attack midfield – Murphy & Almiron will be subs or come in for injuries, but I can see both going in the summer as well.

Forward- Gayle. I only see him getting in if Wood has a long lay off or Howe feels he needs to protect Wood for another game. He will rarely be used as a sub & will be most certainly gone in the summer.

It’s a scary review really. It’s a harsh reminder of just how much work there is still to be done. We have barely started & is further reminder of just how well Howe has done since coming in.

      (Quote)

  45. talk of toon going for Yves Bissouma, in the summer i hope not how he got away with that rape of girl in London club beats me,dont want that sort of player at sjp,but i think Howe will suss him out

Ice – I think it’s just the papers linking us with everyone on that one mate.
My prediction on that one is that Douglas Luiz goes from Villa to Arsenal & Bissouma goes to Villa.

I think we will have other targets lined up for the summer.

  47. OK, what exactly does Richard Keys have against NUFC? Did Shearer put laxatives in his G&T at a golf tournament or summink?

In his latest drivel, that Olly references, he compares Bruno to Dmitri Payet. This was so obscure I had to look it up. He went to West Ham in 2015 because Marseilles were skint. He seems to have done OK and was named London Player of the Year and shortlisted for Players Player of the year.

I have no idea what Keys is on about. Payet is French, not Brazilian. They didnt come from the same clubs and dont even play in the same position.

  48. Moyes said that Zouma was held out of the Leicester game because of illness rather than stress. He did not take part in the pre-match meeting but did warm up. Moyes hinted they had Covid fears but that sounds like BS if they let him do the warm up. The West Ham fans were also singing some strange cat song in support of Zouma. I doubt we will see him on Saturday.

I hadnt really taken much notice of Zouma before the cat incident. I probably wouldnt have recognized him if I had met him is a Stratford pub with him wearing a West Ham shirt and with C’Mon You Irons tattooed on his forehead. Now The Guardian are even doing cartoons about him.

  50. I dont understand these journos. They create their own narrative and then repeat it so often that they actually believe it. Just heard Liam Kennedy say that NUFC dont create many chances, especially from open play. Compared to who, Liverpool! How about comparing it to Bruce’s NUFC where some games we would have 1 shot. Against Everton we had 20 shots. Against Villa it was 10 shots.

These same journos were saying we could easily have had 4 or 5 against Everton and that we did a great job of holding our lead against Villa.

They are as bad as the pundits. Creating a story from nothing and then repeating it like it is fact.

      (Quote)

  51. We also had 15 shots against Leeds. The story should be that Newcastle are ACTUALLY creating chances now, unlike the Bruce/Jones days when we would mostly sit back and defend for 80 mins even when we went ahead. This narrative about not creating chances from open play is simply not true.

We are playing much better now and against teams and Managers who the press have bigged up. You would think Super-Frank and Stevie G were Alex Ferguson the way the media go on about them. And Leeds are peak Barcelona the way their media pals go on sometimes.

And dont get me started on West Ham. Their former Fleet Street journo pals think they have produced every good England player for the last 50 years.

      (Quote)

  52. So, quick maths, that’s 15 shots per game over the last 3 games. That is a massive upgrade on what we have seen for the last 2 years and long may it continue. It is not only that. We have seen with our own eyes that we are playing better and we are certainly pressing more. Yes, there are times when we go into Brucie mode and sit back. But Howe keeps mentioning this mentality and saying we do it too early in games and he wants to change it.

      (Quote)

  53. I bet Declan Rice gets Football Writer’s Player of the Season. He might even deserve it, but he wouldnt get it if he was playing for NUFC. Maybe Cancelo at City, but I doubt it.

Heart says 1 nil NUFC, head says a draw. WHam are not as good as their pundit pals build them up to be though.

It’s a question I can answer with a great deal of confidence mate. Lancester is a lovely area, but if he’s looking elsewhere – I’m up at Great Lumley & it’s a lovely village mate.

Location wise it’s on the A167/A1/A690 so good for traveling round the NE. Train station on the doorstep should he need it.

The village itself has great schools infant/primary age and there are good secondary schools to feed into as well. Shops, takeaways, community centres, churches, doctors, pharmacy all here.
There a good park/play area for kids in the village with CLS park just down the road.

Lambton has just sold a load of land as well so there are houses going up
in and around Lumley now and over the next year or so as well – or there are older houses if they prefer that too.

There is little to no crime or anti social behaviour in the village either.

We looked at Waldridge too, which is nice enough but it’s a bit of a big housing estate I felt – didn’t have the same village feel as Lumley.

Further south, I think Meadowfield has had a lot of housing recently built and Brancepeth is a really nice village. Brancepeth is quite similar to Lancester.

I guess it depends on what his budget is and what he’s looking for from the area mate.

I know the County really well though mate, so I you let me know where he’s looking and I can give you an honest and impartial opinion – unless it’s Lumley, then I’m geet bias ?

Ice – we rarely venture into Chester le Street either – vets & food shopping only. But the Arnison Centre is only 10mins up the road.

I was at Blaydon & the missus from Shildon when we were looking to buy together mate. Lumley ticked every box. Our budget wasn’t as good as Pups but we were still able to get a very nice house in a great location for starting a family.

Not sure when he’s looking at moving down but like I say, there is a lot of development around the Lambton estates so he’s bound to find something that suits.

My cousin lives in Waldridge & her house is lovely, and Waldridge is nice but I like the village feel.
