Another NUFC exit lined up as summer business steps up a notch after Dan Ashworth’s arrival

According to reports, Dwight Gayle could be the next Newcastle United player to follow Isaac Hayden out of the exit door at St James’ Park.

Both TalkSPORT and The Mail have revealed that Middlesbrough are ‘in talks’ with the striker, with this coming less than 24 hours on from Hayden’s sudden loan move to Norwich City.

The North East club, managed by former Sheffield United man Chris Wilder, are looking to improve upon their seventh-placed finish last season, which saw them narrowly missing out on playoffs.

In terms of the Championship, few have better goal scoring records than the 32-year-old who netted 23 times in our promotion season in 2017 as well as another 23 during a loan spell at West Brom in 2018-19.

With just 13 minutes of football since Eddie Howe’s arrival, it’s clear that the forward is not part of our plans for the future and will look to be sold as we try to build funds – and make space – for his replacement.

Another potential exit is also a clear sign of how things have stepped up and started moving since new sporting director Dan Ashworth arrived at the club, with Hayden finding a move on his first day in the job and Matt Targett looking set to complete a permanent switch to St James’ Park any minute now.

  1. This was floating around weeks before Ashworth arrived but feel free to give him the credit if that floats your boat.
