Premier League set to announce ‘festive shake-up’ ahead of 2022/23 season – The Telegraph

As reported by The Telegraph, the Premier League look set to scrap the round of fixtures that are played between Boxing Day and New Years Day for the 2022/23 season to protect players following the World Cup.

In a normal season, the festive period is a particularly busy time for footballers, with games being played on the 26th December, 28th/29th and then commencing with a final round of fixtures on the 1st January.

However, this year, with the Qatar World Cup concluding on the 18th December, the Premier League plans to remove the middle round of games in an attempt to protect the fitness of the players and ease them back into the season.

In the last two campaigns, a congested fixture list has been commonplace for the players and now, with an entire season as well as a World Cup being squeezed into one year, the hardships look set to continue.

These changes – branded a ‘festive shake-up’ – are expected to be confirmed in due course following the announcement of the Premier League fixture list; which currently includes games between the 26th and 31st December.
