Alexander Isak’s teammate reacts to striker’s imminent move to Newcastle live on radio

Speaking live on Radio MARCA Donostia, former Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino admitted losing “very important player” Alexander Isak is “bad” news for Real Sociedad.

The Spanish international was live on the radio when news broke that Isak was closing in on a club record move to Tyneside and was clearly thrown by talk of an imminent exit for his teammate.

Merino, alongside Isak, has been an integral part of Sociedad’s team, achieving European football in all three campaigns the pair have spent together.

The 26-year-old seemed surprised by the news, denying any knowledge of a transfer, but conceded that the Swede is a key man for the La Liga side and a player they’d miss badly.

Speaking on the rumours, Merino said: “I can’t tell you either because I can’t. I mean, I’m not sure if that’s true or not. Now, when I talk to him, I’ll keep him informed. But hey, in any case, it’s bad for us, he’s a very important player.”

Newcastle are hopeful that a deal can be secured as soon as possible with sporting director Dan Ashworth and chief scout Steve Nickson both currently in Spain to sort out the details.
