Newcastle preparing new £40m bid for Champions League midfielder – Report

According to leading Mexican outlet Zona TUDN, Newcastle are ‘preparing a second bid’ for Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez after having an initial bid worth £30m ‘rejected’ by the Dutch champions.

They report that Newcastle are set to offer £40m for the Mexican international, despite already splashing out on a £58m move for Real Sociedad striker Alexander Isak.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been linked with a move for the Eredivisie star, with The Telegraph revealing earlier this week that we’d enquired about a potential move to St James’ Park.

Having signed from Mexican club America in 2019, the Ajax man has been a rock-solid presence in the midfield, also playing 58 times for his country over the past five years.

While Alvarez is an exciting talent in his own right, his ability to play as a traditional number six could help in further unlocking the talents of Bruno Guimaraes, allowing the Brazilian to have more freedom further up the pitch.

A deal for the 24-year-old could take our spending in 2022 up to a staggering £220m – proving just how serious our new owners are in taking us forward and how much faith they have in head coach Eddie Howe.
