Newcastle 1-1 Bournemouth: Flat Mags miss Saint-Maximin badly in SJP draw

A flat and frustrating day at St James’ Park as a below par Newcastle United drew 1-1 with Bournemouth.

Alexander Isak scored his second goal in a black and white shirt from the spot, equalising with 25 minutes to play after Philip Billing’s near post finish gave the visitors a surprise lead.

Ironically, the help of VAR – which robbed us of a clear goal two weeks ago – may have actually won us a point today, as we never really looked like scoring from open play.

Eddie Howe made two changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace two weeks ago, seeing Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn come in for Sean Longstaff and Sven Botman.

It was a really underwhelming first half. We started brightly in the first few minutes, but we just never got going after that. Our passing was off, there were too many loose touches and we looked strangely laboured in our work on and off the ball, with our attack seeming disjointed and in need of that sprinkle of quality to feed an isolated Isak who was struggling to get a kick.

We hit the woodwork twice before the break, once through a Kieran Trippier free kick and again via a back post effort from Joelinton, with Ryan Fraser also going close when his curling effort was tipped around the post brilliantly by Neto.

Possession wasn’t a problem – we were dominating on that front – but we lacked conviction in our approach play in a first half that felt disjoined, low on quality and lacking in the sort of intensity we’ve come to expect from this Eddie Howe side, especially at St James’ Park.

If anything, things got worse in the second 45. We looked half asleep defensively on the rare occasion Bournemouth ran at us, conceded a cheap goal from nowhere and never really got going after that.

The penalty – won by Trippier after his cross hit Jefferson Lerma’s hand – was finished emphatically by Isak, but we offered a worrying lack of service to our £60m man. Too much of our play was in front of Bournemouth, our wingers looked incapable of beating a man – highlighting how much we miss Allan Saint-Maximin – and our midfield three all looked below their best.

Considering how deep Bournemouth sat for the final 20 minutes, I was surprise to we didn’t bring on Chris Wood sooner. It’s not an exciting sub to make, however he could’ve made use of the number of wasted crosses that went into the box prior to him coming on for the final few minutes of the match.

Leaving out Sven Botman was also an odd one, as the Dutchman’s ability to create from deep and break the lines would’ve been useful in a game full of predictable passing. Burn did OK – although didn’t cover himself in glory for the goal – but Schar was way below his best, with too many wayward passes and lapses in concentration.

Joelinton struggled to get the ball under control, Willock didn’t get into the box often enough and Bruno’s ability to impact the game in the final third was limited by him playing in that deeper role. Almiron was too predictable. When opposition teams sit deep, his lack of quality and overreliance on his left foot really does stand out.

It was hard to put your finger on what went wrong today, but it’s clear how much we miss Saint-Maximin – the only winger on our books who looks capable of dribbling past his man and making something happen out of nowhere.

Howe hit the nail on the head after the game. “That’s below the levels we set ourselves. For the first time this season those levels dipped. We were off with every aspect of our game. Big sense of frustration.”

A frustrating day and slightly mystifying display, even if it did expose how much we miss Saint-Maximin and how much we struggle to break down sides who sit deep and play on the counter.

Next up, a trip to Fulham two weeks today following the international break.

  1. I know I will bore people, but…

If I was a picky American I would say the room was small. But, who goes to Florence to stay in their room? The place is like a living museum and you want to be outside as much as you can.

There wasnt a coffee machine in my room, but there was a coffee bar!!!

These are the sorts of complaints I have heard in the past.

  2. Great to see Pope get the nod for this game, hope he has a good one. Bit of a cagey game so far.

Eric, pork pie, boiled egg !!!! nope not on a ploughmans, with a regular salad but not ploughmans.

    Ploughmans
    Crusty bread
    pickled onion/caramelized red onion
    branston
    salad leaves, toms,cucumber
    Cheddar mature
    that’s it
    Oh and Cider

You should bake the brie and dip the crusty bread in it as a side dish.

  3. Watching this England team is like watching the Toon under Cabbage heed Bruce! Shocking! Playing people out of position, no attack, playing “favourites” like super **** Maguire and Shaw rather than those that have actually played well for their club.

We will be out very quickly in the World Cup. Dreadful. 🤬🤬

      (Quote)

  4. Gilly, mate. We actually have defenders who should be in the England squad.

BDB is better than McGuire. Targett is a real left back.

  5. Kimtoon: I must be a bit sick in the head. I am not even drunk!!!

I ordered potted chicken and pork in cans and am going to make my own pork pies. I have frozen dough 🙂 There is no football this weekend so I will have the time 🙂 That is sort of nuts, right? I am going on a couple of internet dates next week. I better not tell them that I made pork pies on the weekend!!!

  6. There is news on my TV that Saudi Arabia are planning a space programme and that one of the astronauts will be a woman. I am serious! The big news is if they let her come back to earth and if she will be able to drive when she gets back.

  7. I really don’t like to say it, but the Mackem T-Rex is England’s number 1 ‘keeper at the moment. Pope is probably better but you just cannot dump Jordan. I don’t like his toddler antics, but he has done nothing wrong for England. He was Everton’s best player by a mile last year as well.

      (Quote)

  8. Targett and Burn should absolutely be in that England side. As should Trippier but Trips should be played in his correct position… he’s not a left back. Southgate has been taking tips from Cabbage Heed it seems.

  9. Eric, no tips for pork pie making as I can’t stand pork pies or pork for that matter due to a nasty bout of food poisoning from it in my teens. Never been able to eat it since, now and again i will try some bacon but I get bacon belly ache , you know where the brain in your gut remembers what pork did to me.
I actually eat very little meat now, more veggie with the odd bit of fish. Still love Miss Millies though, it’s Bristol’s better version of KFC which is minging.

  10. Back to England and football, Walker got rinsed for their goal.
Gareth is not up to the job, said he’d pick players on form- liar, if he did we might have players in their best positions.

      (Quote)

  11. Kimtoon: all the Managers say the same thing but then if you play for Man U or Liverpool you automatically get picked. Phil Neville and Wes Brown FFS. Remember there was a clamour for that Slavic lad whose name started with a J to become British after having a couple of good games for Man U when he was 17. I wonder what happened to him coz he didnt last long at Man U.

      (Quote)

  12. I didnt watch the England game but did look at the starting 11. There are better players in every single defensive position. I suppose Declan Rice deserves to start but he is not the next Bobby Moore as some pundits make him out to be. Joelinton has better stats and plays in a similar position.

      (Quote)

  13. I also think Ivan Toney deserves a look. He reminds me of a fit Callum Wilson. I would buy him if we can afford him in Jan. Doubt he will play at the WC ahead of Kane or Sterling.

Southgate has got very lucky with the Euro and WC draws. 1st decent team we face, we lose. Same in Qatar. We probably have the easiest group.

And the latter stages of last years Euros were home games. The home team usually reaches at least the semis.

      (Quote)

  14. If we dont reach at least the semis we should sack Southgate. If he had a beard he could be my ex-geography teacher. Articulate, but not very good at his job. He should have been preparing us for the A Level test not explaining where he had been!!! The grades are what matter, not the experience. Same with England. Southgate should be picking a team to win, not just his faves as Kimtoon says.

I would get Tuchel if he is still available.

      (Quote)

  15. I think being a NUFC fan has made me more resilient than most people. We have suffered so much disappointment but can also savour the brilliant pieces of skill by Shearer and Beardsley and the odd 5-0 thumping of Man U.

On this trip to Tuscany Google Maps got me lost at least 6 times. One time it caused me to miss a full day trip to the countryside. I felt bad for like half an hour but then thought – I am in one of the most beautiful and historic cities on earth. If I cant find something to do here, then I must be a moron.

So, I went to the central market which is a giant food hall that has every type of Italian food you can imagine, inc seafood, not just pasta. Then the Medici Ricardi museum which I hadn;t planned on going to but is very famous. Then a couple of glasses of wine and pizza at an amazing restaurant near my hotel. I was about to settle in for the night at 8pm and noticed a commotion at an Irish Pub across the street. It was a “soccer bar”. I had had one drink the night before and they had scarves and shirts of PL teams everywhere. I asked why no NUFC and told the barman, just wait, you will have NUFC stuff up there soon.

Anyway, I got gloriously drunk with the locals coz Fiorentina were playing in Europe. They were going nuts in a good way even though their team lost 3-nil. Also got talking to a retired British couple for an hour.

Just goes to show that sometimes when life hands you lemons you can make lemonade.

      (Quote)

  16. Anyway, back to England who have been relegated from the Nations League top tier. The Nations League FFS. Who in their right mind would play McGuire and Shaw? And Walker has lost it as well. I expect Pep to dump him soon. I don’t even think they would get in the Northern Ireland team (of course I am assuming that they would be eligible).

      (Quote)

  17. McGuire reminds me now of peak Mike Williamson. He is scared of the ball and always looks to get rid of it and pass sideways or backwards. There was a time when Harry would try and bring it out from the back. Not anymore. He is scared of his own shadow now.

  18. And Declan Rice said England will come good because the forwards are smashing them in in training. Yes Decca mate, that is because they are playing against the England defense.

    Quite mate

  20. I finally watched the match and dont think we played that badly. We probably would win that game 9 times out of 10 and should won about 3-1. I thought Bournemouth defended pretty well but we were a bit wasteful from set pieces. How many corners and free kicks in good positions did we have. Isak was left a bit isolated but we will be OK with Wilson and Maxi back.

I thought Big Joe was MOTM – he was everywhere. I dont really think anybody had a bad game. The difference in style is night and day and even though we didnt win we gave it a go. Under Eddie we have been unlucky not to win, under the Corbridge Cabbage we were always lucky if we won.

I doubt Bournemouth will concede only 1 again with as many shots, corners and free kicks as we had. I would say they are in a relegation scrap even though they have the same number of points as us. Would any of their players get in our team?

      (Quote)

  21. I also watched Spurs/Leicester. It was a really strange game because Leicester matched Spurs most of the game but lost 6-2. They are bottom and I think there will be calls for the sack. I think part of it is Jamie Vardy getting old but Brendan has got 2 top 5 finishes and an FA Cup. If he had that at NUFC he would be a hero.

I think he probably has 2 games to save his job. Chelsea sacked Tuchel FFS after he won the CL.

      (Quote)

  22. I am even seeing some complaints from NUFC “fans” about where we are in the table after a 200 million spend. We are without 2 of our current 3 best players FFS and have had points stolen by dodgy Refs. 9 mins added on at Liverpool.

Have they actually watched our football? We are a different team, both in style and literally in personnel. We took Arsenal apart in the 2nd last game last season.

I have always known it about certain NUFC fans, that moaners will moan. You may say I have moaned as well, but that was mainly about Pards and The Cabbage. I even gave Schteve the benefit of the doubt when he first started. And even though I said from the off that Ugly John Carver was doomed to failure, I did say he was dealt a terrible hand with injuries.

      (Quote)

  23. I also paid attention to Maddison and I don’t think he is a 60 million pound player. I think we would be better looking at a fast goalscoring winger. He was Leicester’s player but we have his position filled. Are him a Tripps going to fight over corners and free kicks? Bruno can hit long balls and so can Shelvey when he fit again. I think our money can be better spent elsewhere. I think for a bit lower price Jack Harrison at Leeds is the better option.

  24. It’s hard not to be disappointed with the current position of nufc.

we can all agree that nufc have been on the 5h1tty end of decisions but at some point the team just have to step up and take care of business at the weekend

Nufc are a lot of fun to watch and transformed from this time last year so disappointment is offset by stepping back and acknowledging how far they’ve progressed under Howe and long may it continue

Looking forward to a win at the weekend

      (Quote)

  25. The injury updates dont look good and Edwards whatever anybody thinks of him seems to have an insider at SJP so I believe his tweet. Eddie is pretty cautious so I think he starts Bruno and ASM on the bench. The good news is that our defense is still pretty strong and that Wilson returns. My guess at Eddie’s team unless there is good injury news is:

    Pope

    Tripps Botman Burn Targett

    Little Joe Longstaff Big Joe

    Miggy Wilson Fraser

In don’t think Fulham will get more than 1 goal against us but there isnt much firepower in that team unless Little Joe finds his shooting boots. Probably another draw.

      (Quote)

  26. It struck me that that is a whole new defense since The Cabbage played his famous 9-0-1 formation. They are strong enough to defend in a four, but also play out of the back. This allows the midfield to play further up the pitch and the forwards to press. We have seen in every game this season that that is Eddie’s strategy – even Bournemouth.

I will say again, I dont think we played as badly as most are making out – even Eddie. The result influenced the perception of the performance. We really should have had a couple more goals.

I was watching one of the Youtube channels and the host said a minority of Twitter “fans” were calling for Eddie’s head. You would expect them to be naive kids but in my experience there also quite a few grumpy old men, and there are a surprising number of older folk on Twitter. BUT, WHAT ARE THEY THINKING!!!

      (Quote)

  27. The England/Germany game is actually on US TV so I am going to watch it. Southgate’s luck cannot possibly continue if he continues to act like Steve Bruce and picks the wrong players, out of form players and the wrong formation. He has been so lucky with the groups we got in major tournaments. Some observations.

Why is he playing 3 centre halfs when he has Declan Rice screening them. It is almost like he is playing 4 CHs. And Walker is not a CH even though Southgate plays him there.

He is playing Saka as a wingback when he really should be a sub and come on for Sterling if he has a bad game.

Luke Shaw should never play for England.

McGuire is out of form and was he ever good enough anyway?

If you play 4-3-3 we can get another midfielder on and we have plenty. Grealish for one. We can take the game to them.

Kane likes to drop into midfield now so why not start Toney.

He is just so **** lucky, which reminds me of The Cabbage in his 1st 2 years at NUFC and then he got found out.

Apart from his favourites like T-Rex, McGuire, Rice and Kane I really think he just pins up a squad list and throws darts to see who the other 7 will be. Then he tries to fit them into a formation, playing most of them out of position. Walker as a CH boggles my mind.

      (Quote)

  28. The swear blocker just dropped “d@mn”. Is it an American design? A lot of people use darn over here instead which I think is going too far.

      (Quote)

  29. Oh, I do know why he plays Walker as a CH. Coz he thinks his pace will make up for Tug-Boat Mcguire’s lack of pace.

      (Quote)

  30. Can’t see this Germany team beating Brazil 7-1 again at the WC.

I dont understand the tactics, just sitting back and taking the crowd out of it who have been almost completely silent. Even the Tossers with Trumpets havent played many tunes.

      (Quote)

  31. Half time and it is a bit like watching NUFC against Bournemouth with England being Bournemouth. At least we hit the post twice in the 1st half.

Only England player to offer any threat is Sterling. He is England’s Billings.

      (Quote)

  32. So, nobody watched the England game? It turned out pretty much as expected except for Pope’s spill for the 3rd goal. Gareth set up in a low block even though we were at home, relying on Sterling to create something. He essentially played 6 at the back coz Rice was screening the 3 centre backs. Then Germany decided to be more adventurous for the 1st 20 mins of the 2nd half and scored twice. This woke England up a bit and Gareth made a couple of changes. We then played 15 yards further up the pitch and looked a different team.

I don’t know why Southgate doesnt play to our strengths which is midfield and attack and relies on mediocre defenders not to concede.

Oh, and of course, Harry McGuire had another stinker.

      (Quote)

  33. Cannot believe how Maguire gets into that team over Burn for example. Maguire responsible for both Germany’s first two goals. He gave away the penalty then lost the ball in midfield where he shouldn’t have been.

      (Quote)

  34. Eddie man, what’s going on with our injuries? Isak, Bruno, Maxi, Anderson, Shelvey, Wilson. All of our better players out injured. Is it your training methods or the way you have them playing? Something’s not right. Wood, Murphy and Willock stay fit but not the skilful ones. Weird!

I note the cookie box has disappeared. Dunno why it was ever there in the first place.

      (Quote)

  35. Hope that error doesnt dent Pope’s confidence for us. What it does along with McGuire is take away the limelight from Southgate’s appalling tactics. I reckon Mcguire might finally be dropped from the 1st 11 as it seems Ten Hag has no faith in him.

It is amazing what happens when you play players in their proper positions – Saka. Southgate got extremely lucky as I think the players took it upon themselves to go further up the pitch and play like they do for their club teams.

BBC radio and the papers are twisting themselves in knots to defend Southgate now after basically wanting him sacked after the Italy game.

Pope will probably still go to the WC but I bet he is behind Henderson and Ramsey.

We HAVE TO play a 3 man midfield. That is our strength and if we are playing to win by the odd goal it leaves us open to individual errors like it did last night. All of our defenders have an error in them and that includes Tripps.

      (Quote)

  36. I never wanted Southgate but was willing to put up with him when the results went our way. His tactics were awful though and he never made any in-game changes. Take away the narrow and lucky wins and he is just a better dressed Steve Bruce.

      (Quote)

  37. geoggio: Southgate has the players to attack if only he would let them off the leash. He chooses to rely on the worst part of the team – the defense – to get a result. He supposedly plays wing-backs but they usually sit back and defend with Rice as a screen so that is 6 at the back.

I am probably being a little bit harsh but I have been conditioned to hate this type of football by watching NUFC for the last 10 years. It started with Pards. His plan was to keep it tight and try to nick a goal. Ugly John was next, more of the same. Schteve started out trying to press but when the results didnt go his way he went back to the negative tactics. Rafa and Bruce were exactly the same – boring football, win it by the odd goal and accept a draw.

So I have had 10 years of these “tactics” and am sick of them.

      (Quote)

  38. Both Rafa and Bruce said they didnt have the players in the PL to play any other way. To an extent that was true. It is not true of England and Gareth.

      (Quote)

  39. On American TV the commentary teams and panels are full of Brits. Yesterday there was Alexi Lalas and Clint Dempsey. The host asked if they would like Harry McGuire to start in Qatar against the USA. Both of their arms shot up. Pretty telling really.

      (Quote)

  40. The USA are playing Saudi Arabia today. I wonder what Miguel Delaney thinks of that? Should they boycott the game. Will he be quoting Amnesty International for their view or interviewing Kashoggi’s widow?

      (Quote)

  41. I just read a piece in The Mag and was surprised by Maddison’s stats. He scored 12 and had 8 assists last season. Compare that to Miggy or Shelvey whose places he might take over and it is night and day. I was skeptical about the fee but now I am sold. Imagine getting a 10 goal midfielder and how many more games we would win? There really arent that many 12 goal midfielders with PL experience. He turns 26 this year so he should be at his peak.

      (Quote)

  42. Eric – I’d go one further mate and take Tielmans as well. He’d go into midfield with Bruno & Big Joe.

I favoured Maddison over Paqueta. I didn’t dislike the idea of Paqueta, I just thought Maddison was a player we needed more. He’d go on that right side of the front 3. He’d play further in field that Almiron but far more effective – and I don’t think it would be an issue with Tripz providing that width anyway.

It would be over £100m for those 2 players for sure – maybe pushing £120m. But I think it would be money well spent for 2 players in their mid 20s with 4 or 5 prime seasons still ahead of them.

      (Quote)

  43. So Southgate says Trips is better than TAA … what a moron. I’m not saying he’s totally wrong in what he says, but … This from a manager that favours Maguire over a player like Dan Burn! Also, he didn’t play either Trippier or TAA! So, Southgate talking verbal diarrhoea once again. Both Trips and TAA are excellent players with slightly different aspects to their game. Any manager who says things like this openly about the players he manages is no manager in my eyes. You keep comments like this private with the players.

      (Quote)

  44. Gilly – I think Southgate worded his answer very poorly. I think what he means is better for the same Southgate wants to play. I think Trippier is more reliable and could play LB for him if required.

But if you are playing 3 CBs, there is no better wing back than TAA imo – it’s the perfect position for him.

It was playing Saka at LWB against Italy that got me. Saka is excellent as a RWF for Gunners – you saw the difference he made when he came on against Germany in that position.

If it’s a LB/LWB he’s looking for the Targett has proven to be very reliable.

I know we’ll be bias pushing toon players – but is Shaw in better form (nope coz he’s not getting a game for Man Utd), is Chilwell in better form (nope coz he’s not getting selected for Chelsea) – and would be be a better fit that a natural RWF – yep!!.

Regarding Dan Burn, you’re right – he’s every bit as reliable as any other English CB you can name.

      (Quote)

  45. Sharpy: Shaw had one good game against Germany so you know Southgate will start him against Iran. Mourinho didnt rate him and in fact used him as his whipping boy to make a point to other players that if you didnt train hard you didnt play. Ten Haag has dropped him and McGuire. McGuire has been cr@p for 18 months. Everybody knows it, except Southgate. I think he only played under Ole because of his price tag.

      (Quote)

  46. If you are going to play 3 central defenders then you have to play real wingbacks. I dont mind Tripps and Reece James as long as they have the dual role of defending and attacking. You cannot just sit back with those 2.

Then there is who he picks as CBs. Walker is not a CB. He is in there to make up for McGuire’s lack of pace.

I have said before it is just madness to neglect the best part of your team – midfield and attack – to accommodate 1 player. Harry McGuire. It may sound simplistic, but taking McGuire out solves so many problems. We could play 4 at the back with Rice and Bellingham as screens. You could even start Walker, but in his proper position, left back.

But it not just McGuire. It is Southgate’s mindset of defend 1st even against lesser teams. You saw what happened against the Germans. I think they had more than 60% possession in the 1st half and pinned us back. At Wembley FFS. When Southgate (or the players themselves) took the shackles off we looked a different team. It was not just the subs that changed the game it was a willingness to get forward. Stupid journos will say it was because there was nothing to lose. BUT THERE WAS NOTHING TO LOSE FROM TH BEGINNING. It was a glorified friendly and we had already been relegated because of Southgate’s tactics.

We are now in a Nations League Group below Scotland. None of Scotand’s first team would even make the England squad. Southgate better hope we make at least the QFs of the WC. We have the easiest group.

      (Quote)

  47. I am going to bring it back to Bruce. His tactics were to sit back and try to hit ’em on the break with a fast forward – ASM. Until we went 2 down, Southgate’s only tactic was to set Sterling free and let him run at the Germans.

      (Quote)

  48. If you only play one way and are carrying a player, you will eventually be found out by good managers. Southgate has been very lucky anyway and has failed against the first decent teams he has come up against. Everybody agrees he has been very lucky with draws and it has happened again at the WC. We should not be confusing easy draws with good management. We even had the easiest qualifying group FFS.

      (Quote)

  49. Mitro now has 50 goals for Serbia. To put that in context, Kane has 51 and Rooney 53. He was also becoming a bit of a cult hero on Tyneside but the mindset of most NUFC fans was “In Rafa we Trust”.

      (Quote)

  50. Nothing will change re England before the WC. I doubt we will get out the first group stages. Not if we play those tactics and players.

      (Quote)

  51. I reckon Southgate will stick with Slabheed for the 1st game. He should take an extra centre back though and play further up the pitch so McGuire is not placed in situations on the edge of our box. That is on Southgate and his defensive mindset as much as it is on Mcguire being shyte and rusty.

I think the pundits will stick with Southgate. Hell, they stuck with Bruce and Pardew until the end. The quality of football will not matter to them as long as we get out of the group.

The tabloids are a different animal. They will be all patriotic one minute and act like a pack of wolves if we fail. Remember “Wally with a Brolly”? Before that The Sun superimposed Graham Taylor’s head on a turnip and filled their whole back page with it. They act like they worshipped Bobby Robson. Did they fck. They houded him for months and Bobby visibly aged when in the England job. Now it is convenient for them to say they backed the great man after he had some success and played good football – a novelty as England Manager.

      (Quote)

  52. The website Football365 say Joao Palhinha of Fulham is the bargain of the season so far. He is out of our game with 5 yellows. Hopefully Mitro’s knock keeps him out as well.

With the return of Bruno and Wilson and ASM on the bench we should have too much for Fulham despite their good start. There is always a promoted team that starts strong but they usually come back down to earth. We have seen what Marco Silva can do in the PL with Everton and I dont think Fulham will continue in their recent form.

      (Quote)

  53. Given the injury updates I think our starters are pretty much set, with the question being Burn or Schar. I reckon Burn because Botman will be the “playmaker” centre half this week. To tell you the truth I dont really mind which 2 from 3 he picks. I do have a wildcard though. If it goes like the last game and we have corner after corner and free kick after free kick I would try Lascelles after 60 minutes. He seems our biggest threat in the opposition box.

I expect ASM on the bench, so…

    Pope

    Tripps Botman Burn Targett

    Willock Bruno Joelinton

    Miggy Wilson Fraser
