Newcastle handed double boost ahead of Sunday’s trip to Manchester United – Reports

It looks like Alexander Isak will return to the Newcastle United squad for the first time in almost a month this weekend, with Jonjo Shelvey also pushing to make the squad.

As revealed by The Mail’s Craig Hope, our club record signing is in with a chance of making the bench ahead of our trip to Manchester United this Sunday.

The Swedish forward picked up a ‘thigh injury’ during the international break last month, seeing him miss recent wins over Fulham and Brentford.

However, it’s believed the 23-year-old has returned to first-team training this week. Eddie Howe has been reluctant to rush him back, revealing that the medical team were being ‘cautious’ with his recovery, but it looks like he’ll be back in contention at Old Trafford.

The Northern Echo also report that Jonjo Shelvey could return to the matchday squad this weekend, having trained for the first time since pre-season last Friday following a long hamstring layoff.

Here’s what Howe had to say on Isak last week, followed by Craig Hope’s update on the former Real Sociedad star:

“He’s running on grass and increasing his speed so he’s in a good place. Hopefully it wont be too long. He suffered a muscle problem to his thigh and his scan wasn’t overly bad but the medical team are just being cautious with him at this moment.”
