Swap deal ‘rejected’ as new details emerge on £30m Toon target – One to watch in January?

As reported by The Athletic, Newcastle offered Chris Wood as a makeweight in a bid to sign Joao Pedro on deadline day, but our part-exchange proposal was ‘never given serious consideration’ by Watford.

Newcastle had bid around £30m for the Brazilian earlier in the window, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that a deal was ‘done’ at one stage, however the Hornets stood firm and instead handed the 21-year-old a new contract.

It has since become clear that Newcastle were willing to add in £25m-man Wood to sweeten the deal as a last-ditch attempt to get their man, but the Kiwi’s representatives believe it was always a non-starter so late in the day.

Wood arrived in January as the club were desperately in need of a centre-forward, but with just two league goals since joining and Alexander Isak now replacing him in the pecking order, it seems we are already open to offers for the 30-year-old.

Since turning down the Magpies, Pedro has gone from strength to strength in the Championship, scoring four and assisting twice in 13 league appearances.

Considering we made THREE bids to sign him over the summer, this could be one to watch in January if Watford’s promotion hopes fade between now and then.
