Toon set to trigger clause in contract – A smart move after Thursday’s 5-0 win in Saudi?

According to The Chronicle, Eddie Howe is keen to extend Loris Karius’ stay at St James’ Park, with the club expected to trigger the extension clause in his contract.

The 29-year-old’s deal is due to expire on December 31st, however it’s thought he’ll stay until at least the end of the season – as he’s considered solid back-up to Nick Pope and someone who’s integrated into the dressing room well since his arrival in September.

On his first start for Newcastle, the German was our stand-out player in the first half and a huge reason why we came away with a clean sheet on the night.

His handling was good in the early stages as he gathered three well struck efforts, he was quick off his line, released the ball quickly to start attacks and made his first of two superb saves to deny Odion Ighalo from six yards out.

Then, shortly after Joelinton made it 2-0, the former Liverpool stopper showed brilliant reflexes to tip Andre Carrillo’s curling effort around the post and out.

It may have been a mid-season friendly, but he looked calm, assured and confident with everything he did.

Newcastle World revealed yesterday that there is a belief behind the scenes that Karius has ‘improved significantly’ since he first arrived at the club a few months ago. Mix this with his superb debut display and you can see why a new deal may be on the horizon!
