Sources close to Newcastle confirm January interest in Premier League duo – The Telegraph

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are showing interest in Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans ahead of the January window.

As revealed by Luke Edwards, the club have upped their attempts to bring in a new midfielder next month following another long-term injury to Jonjo Shelvey; who could be missing until March with a calf problem.

A move for Caicedo is considered a ‘long shot’ – Brighton are reluctant to do business with a club that poached their sporting director (Dan Ashworth) and have set an asking price in excess of £60m – while Tielemans’ wage demands are believed to be ‘in excess’ of £150,000.

With Financial Fair Play restrictions currently limiting our spending, it remans to be seen if we can agree a deal for the Belgian international; who will have no shortage of admirers now he’s approaching the last six months of his deal at Leicester.

Elsewhere, sources close to St James’ Park have denied Newcastle’s interest in Jorginho, as the soon-to-be out of contract Chelsea midfielder is not thought to possess the mobility to play in our high-energy system, not to mention his wage demands would be ‘far too big.’

Away from midfield, it’s thought a young right-back and wide forward are remain on Howe’s wishlist, with Edwards describing Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram as a ‘long-standing target.’ James Maddison remains a target, but it seems he won’t be leaving Leicester until the summer, at the earliest.

Caicedo would be an outstanding signing – the Ecuadorian could compliment Bruno Guimaraes brilliantly – but it’s tough to see how we get this one done when you combine the huge asking price with our FFP limitations.

  1. We have too many players who have a history of not being able to play due to fitness/injury issues.
Our short and long term strategy should be to offload these players as soon as possible.
Some are more consistent with injuries than they are playing for the club, pay as you play with higher wage for playing should be considered imo.
Dummet, Shelvey, St Max, Wilson and Krafth eg.
