Earlier this month, The Athletic revealed that Youri Tielemans has been ‘extensively watched’ by Newcastle United scouts, with Eddie Howe intent on signing a new ‘No 6’ in 2023.
Interestingly, that same piece stated that Howe’s preference is to sign a Premier League proven midfielder capable of making an immediate impact; which makes sense given our ongoing push for a top four finish.
Mix these two factors with our attempts to work alongside FFP restrictions, the Foxes star seems to be ticking a lot of boxes, especially when his contract situation (it’s due to expire in six months time) may allow him to leave on a cut-price fee this month.
With all of the above in mind, he’s a big one to watch during tonight’s quarter-final clash at St James’ Park. Fans like you and I will be wary of his quality on the ball, pinpoint passing and ability to score from range, but I’m sure both Howe and Toon scouts will be keeping a close eye on all aspects of his display as Newcastle contemplate a potential bid.
Rodgers admitted last week that out of contract players seeking a summer move away could easily be sold in the coming weeks, almost urging the Leicester board to raise funds.
Who knows, a special night on Tyneside and electric atmosphere may just encourage him to make the move, as he looks like a man who’s ready for a new challenge
So, while long-term target James Maddison will be missing after failing to recover from an ongoing issue, Tielemans is one worth keeping a close eye on come 8pm tonight.
