Newcastle United striker Chris Wood is closing in on a surprise move to Nottingham Forest, according to The Times.
They report that the Reds have been working on a deal to sign the 31-year-old on loan, with Steve Cooper eager to bolster his attack as they bid to beat the drop on their first season back in the big time.
It was recently reported that we’d reject any offers for the former Burnley man this month, yet The Times state that Wood is ‘nearing a move to the City Ground’ – suggesting a deal may have reached an advanced stage.
Howe has previously rubbished suggestions he would allow the Kiwi to leave, saying he still had a ‘massive’ role to play as our third choice striker behind Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.
With that in mind, talk of him heading to Nottingham Forest makes me wonder if we have a new signing of our own lined up?
After all, Wilson remains injury prone and Isak has only just returned from a thigh injury that kept him our for three and a half months, so it would seem risky business letting Wood leave without a replacement.
