Sky Sports: Two Newcastle targets miss training on Tuesday as transfer talk intensifies

An intriguing update has arrived on Everton’s Anthony Gordon and Amadou Onana; two players who’ve been strongly linked with late moves to St James’ Park over the past 24 hours.

As revealed by Sky Sports News, BOTH players were nowhere to be seen at Finch Farm today, missing training sessions taken by Paul Tait and Leighton Baines following Frank Lampard’s dismissal.

Links with Gordon have intensified today, with The Mail’s Craig Hope confirming formal talks are underway, while The Telegraph report that we’re growing increasingly confident of signing the winger; who is believed to be keen to arrive on Tyneside.

As for Onana, a raft of reports on Monday night claimed that Newcastle had joined the race for the 6ft 4′ midfielder.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that we’ve registered our interest in the former Lille star, with 90min’s Graeme Bailey also told that we’ve enquired about a late move for the 21-year-old.

Time will tell if their absence has anything to do with Newcastle, but it’s certainly an intriguing development – especially when the club are in the market for a wide forward and holding midfielder over the final week of the January transfer window.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, here’s what North-East reporter Keith Downie has had to say about our pursuit of Gordon ahead of tonight’s cup semi-final:
