Newcastle dealt triple blow but deadline day ‘twist’ still possible – The Telegraph

It looks like Newcastle’s search for a late Jonjo Shelvey replacement will go right down to the wire.

As revealed by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, Conor Gallagher, Sander Berge and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all look unlikely to sign.

He reports that Chelsea ‘don’t want to do a deal’ with Newcastle, presumably as they see us as top four rivals and have no interest in strengthening us. However, a deadline day twist could still be on the cards, as the Blues will need to cut their squad should Todd Boehly secure a record-breaking deal for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

Loftus-Cheek is believed to want ‘far too much money’, so it seems we won’t be going there, while Edwards states that Berge ‘is not happening’ after the Sheffield United midfielder was the subject of a loan-to-buy bid from St James’ Park on Monday.

With Shelvey’s permanent move to Nottingham Forest set to be announced tomorrow, let’s hope we can find a loan deal to boost our midfield options, with us currently left with four players to fill three positions in Eddie Howe’s engine room.

  1. I’m a huge fan of Shelvey, when fit he can control a game as well as anyone, and we still don’t have anyone who can pick out a pass like him, but the problem is in the last 5 seasons he’s missed 56 league games through injury and probably 15 more sitting on the bench, with only 3 appearances this season.
We’re hardly going to miss him – especially this season!
