Newcastle United’s 17-game unbeaten run has come to an end – but it could’ve been oh-so different at St James’ Park.
After a fast start saw Miguel Almiron denied by a big early save from Alisson, what followed was one of the most cruel 12 minutes of football you’ll see all season.
All of the early pressure came from us, but the Reds took the lead through Darwin Nunez, who latched onto a brilliant Alexander-Arnold through ball and smashed past Nick Pope.
One then became two as Coady Gakpo converted from another sublime pass, this time from Mo Salah. If 2-0 down wasn’t bad enough when we’d been comfortably the better side, a bad start then turned into a disaster.
In an attempt to stop Salah bursting through on goal, Pope handled the ball outside the box to deny a goalscoring opportunity. A red card followed and with that it felt like our hopes of a comeback were all but killed off just 22 minutes in. Not only that, the dismissal meant he will now miss next Sunday’s Carabao Cup final. Absolutely heartbreaking for Pope and a huge, huge blow.
We could’ve easily felt sorry for ourselves, gone into our shells and accepted defeat, yet the response was superb. Going down to 10 cut short Elliot Anderson’s first Premier League start, seeing Almiron drop into a midfield three and Saint-Maximin join Isak up top in more of a 4-3-2.
The Frenchman was superb all evening and almost pulled a goal back, with a mazy run ending in a brilliant effort that clipped the bar after another big save from Alisson. Then, just moments before the break, Dan Burn hit the woodwork after powering a free header off the underside of the crossbar.
There was a similar theme at the beginning of the second half. Liverpool had the man advantage but it was Newcastle who always looked the more likely side to score. That in itself was admirable and highlighted how well we reacted to going a man down, yet so bittersweet. On another night, we’d have won this.
Saint-Maximin set up Isak, who fired a snapshot over, Schar headed wide and Wilson had a huge chance to pull a goal back blocked by Alisson. We played well over an hour with 10 men, yet we ended the game with more shots than Liverpool.
With the final in mind, Howe took off Trippier, Joelinton, Isak and Almiron, bringing on the likes of Murphy, Ritchie, Gordon and Wilson for the final 30 minutes.
Liverpool had plenty of chances to extend their lead late on, with Jota going close on several occasions and Nunez drawing a big save from Dubravka. In the end, two moments of quality and Pope’s error did the damage, yet it was a performance to be proud of in so many respects.
If we can look the better side with 10 men against Liverpool, we can beat Manchester United with 11 men next weekend.
The 17-game unbeaten run is over, we’ve lost at St James’ Park for the first time since last May and Pope will miss the final next weekend, but it’s not all doom and gloom on a damaging night for Newcastle.
(4-3-3): Pope – Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn – Anderson, Longstaff, Joelinton, Anderson – Almiron, Isak, Saint-Maximin.
SUBS: Dubravka, Dummett, Lascelles, Gordon, Wilson, Ritchie, Lewis, Manquillo, Murphy.

Agree with all of that Olly! Good write up. And a big plus, Maxi is back!
And, it’s still only our second league loss this season. It shows the huge gap though that we have in squad depth and striker quality to the top teams.
Gilly Toon(Quote)
I actually didn’t expect us to win today, we’ve been shy converting chances a while now. Going at them like that from the start was always gonna leave us open to the sucker punch.
After seeing Christians little lads before the match, the game didn’t matter that much, getting beat is nowt compared to their suffering .
Just a really horrible day all round really. Hopefully a better day next weekend.
kimtoon(Quote)
Had a conversation with my mate watching the match yesterday and he was saying Howe got praise when the team was doing well – nows the time to earn his living.
Whilst I agree in part – I still think his job has been made hard with that January window. Forget no signings – letting Shelvey & Wood go feels like it’s made his job harder again!!.
But I go back to my point yesterday – stats wise we were similar to Liverpool – they just had the forwards to finish their chances.
We spent similar on Isak as they did Nunez & whilst Nunez has struggled a little bit, he looks far more suited to the PL imo.
We don’t have the players to play the killer passes they did & we don’t have the forwards putting the ball away like theirs did.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Sorry to bang the January window drum again – but it just felt like the time to recruit when were on a high & could kick on.
I really feel our season will fall away to a 7th or 8th place finish – which will still be good progress in terms of the longer term plan. But if you were a player, would joining a 4th place club & helping push for CL football be more appealing than joining a 7th or 8th placed club pushing to break into the top 6?.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Kim – you’re right about Atsus kids as well.
To be fair to the scousers I thought the ‘never walk alone’ was a nice touch too 👏🏼👏🏼.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Hate to disagree Sharpy, but we did spend in January, whether we spent enough and in the right positions is questionable. Gordon and Ashby.
Also given that we finished 9th last season and spent on Pope, Botman and Isak in Summer a gain of one or two places in the league is hardly progress and given the ambition of the owners is unlikely to be seen as pushing on. The Europa League places of 5th and 6th should be a minimum and for that to happen we would need to be caught by both Spurs and Liverpool.
To finish 7th or 8th there must be two ther teams catch us a well. Chelsea ? Fulham ? Brighton ? Brentford?
Wake up smell the coffee and recognise a dip for what it is. Do you really think that Howe will oversee a slump of those proportins.?
We will regains some stability and given the chances we are creating proven goalscores will score.
PremAndUp(Quote)
Prem – we finished 11th with 49 points, not 9th.
We are already on 41 points – which imo is the only way to gauge progression – points accumulated.
League positions can be dependent on how other teams perform – there’s nothing we can do to influence that. An increase in points from last season is the only real measurement for Howe & the players.
As for smelling the coffee 🙄. I said last week that if this is our slump the team were still picking up points – then yesterday happened.
But maybe you need to do a bit of waking up yourself mate. Our performance levels pre World Cup were always going to be difficult to get back to – I think it’s highly unlikely we return to that form. We will get better im sure, but I don’t see us returning to that standard.
Why? – Miggy was playing to a level never seen before in a NUFC shirt – he has reverted to form.
Players are starting to get injuries & those who aren’t look fatigued – the likes of Burn, Trippier & Joelinton all look like they need a bl00dy good rest.
But you also have teams like Man Utd & Liverpool all hitting form & having key players returning from injury.
I’m not saying this order – but I see these teams finishing above us:
Arsenal
Man City
Man Utd
Liverpool
Spurs could but a very good season would see us 5th or 6th – an exceptional season would be top 4 imo.
But I also don’t think it’s inconceivable that we struggle between now & the end of the season and one or two from Fulham, Brighton and Brentford keep going and catch us – then we are looking at 7th or 8th … but I would still see that as a good season & progression if our points tally is up around the 60 mark.
Next week could well be a pivotal game – how the players react win or lose.
Sharpy17(Quote)
As for the January signing – I’ll stand corrected on Gordon. But I’m not having Ashby. I don’t believe he was signed with a view of playing for us this season at all – I think he was paraded as if he was to disguise the lack of other signings.
As for it being questionable – I’m not sure it would be a very lengthy conversation that one.
I truly believe we managed to weaken our squad by letting Shelvey & Wood go without replacing them.
Sharpy17(Quote)
I stand correected 11th and 39 pts.
PremAndUp(Quote)
Prem – sorry to correct you again but it was 49 points.
We sit on 41 points now with 14 games still to play. 42 points still up for grabs. If we can get 15-20 points from those I’d be happy with that.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Such a strange game, giving away the goals and moment of madness from Pope but then honestly it didn’t look like we played with a man down. I know that happens sometimes but not usually the whole hour. The decision to loan Dubravka always seemed odd to me but now it could really hurt us.
But the positives…switched wingers and Maxi looking good. Bruno back in and Wilson has survived, some smart touches from Isak and despite our lack of goals I think with 11 men we’ll cause problems. Fingers crossed we’ve saved up all our set piece routines for this coming match eh…Oh and going in with low expectations might help the pressure a bit!
Newkie(Quote)
41 with 15 to play Sharpy, but never mind.
I find that it interesting that our first 8 games of the season went w2 d5 L1 before heaving 38 pts from 19 at the half way stage
Since the restart after the world cup we wennt w2, d5 L1, exactly the same.
Now Im ot suggesting that we will end on 76 pts, although I may have been more optimistic at the restart.
The average pts needed to finish 4th over the 10 seasons is 72, which would require 31 from 15 better than 2 per game. Which to be fair even I will admit is optimistic. The average for 4th is 63 which is 22pts from 15 which I would definately expect to get.
PremAndUp(Quote)
soz I really should proof read before publication
PremAndUp(Quote)
Our form hasnt been that good but it looks like for the run in we will have players and even a selection headache.
Bruno will be back. Targett can challenge BDB. Up front we can even play Isak and Wilson together. Then we have ASM and Gordon to give options on the wings.
I was very optimistic about this year. I still am if we can find our shooting boots. And get a fcn header coach for BDB, Schar and Botman!!!!
Eric Sykes(Quote)
Eddie has a win rate of 46% in the EPL with newcastle averaging 1.7 pts per game which over 17 games is 25 pts so using historical evidence that looks like enough for 6th.
The other aspect is what constitutes success for the directors, management and players. Top four would attract a higher calibre of player and additional funds. Either way playing in Europe needs a squad with much greater depth than we have. I’m worried that not qualifying for the Champions league leaves us in a transfer limbo.

I know the conversion has moved on but I’m just joining so sorry to go backwards in conversation
To suggest that wood and shelvey moving on is weakening our team is ironic.
This is the wood who most Newcastle fans have castigated beyond all rational thought and was recently described as the worst CF ever at this club.
6m quid for a player who was ever present in our relegation avoidance is fab business and in a business sense he’d served his short term purpose. Best wishes and good luck to him
As for shelvey, he’s a player who’d hardly featured this season and has been called out by many as dead wood to be moved on in summer to free up wages. A decent squad player who was only going to become a peripheral figure going forward. What evidence is there that he’s performed consistently at a level to change games ?
The Club should be applauded for their fairness towards him not derided for thinking only if themselves. Polar opposite of manu and lingard that drew much criticism from Newcastle fans
GoWest!Mag(Quote)
Ref Jan investment, Gordon and Ashby are good prospects. Not the splash signings many were calling for but they should benefit the squad and look to buy into the club mentality
I’ve got colleagues and friends who are long term hammers fans and without exception they were gutted he never got a chance at WHU. With trippier in his own personal dip in form investment at RB feels prudent
GoWest!Mag(Quote)
Go West:
I was saying on here for ages that it was disgusting how some NUFC fans were treating Wood. Mainly on youtube channels which I am not sure you ever watch. The worst was Paul at Toon Review who when we won by 3 clear goals would still find 10 minutes at the start of his show to criticize Wood. He, and a lot of others, have no clue about football and tactics and especially about Eddie.
Eddie got a battering ram CF to keep Bournemouth in the league in his first job in football Management. He used the same approach to keep NUFC up. But haters are gonna hate! I have been to so many games when the glass is half empty according to the fan behind me and they have someone to pick on.
Maybe it is like the Pink Floyd song, The Wall? Talking about shallow lives and how they need to pick on someone and go back home “where their fat psychopathic wives thrash them to within inches of their lives” ?
Eric Sykes(Quote)
West Ham need to step up here. A draw will do! But I’d prefer Spurs get zero points. 😂😳
Gilly Toon(Quote)
Go West – I don’t think Wood or Shelvey had a long term future with NUFC – nor am I suggesting they would be in the first team if all were fully fit.
But both would be good enough to come off the bench & contribute over the remainder of the season.
It absolutely weakens the squad allowing them to leave and not replace them.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Prem – there is obviously a scale to success & failure & im sure all associated with NUFC want us to be as successful as we can possibly be.
But the owners seem to growing the club & not just looking for instant but unsustainable success.
It’s seems as important to get the ground and training facilities up to elite levels, building the commercial side of the club & stocking the academy – than just improving the first team squad – and I can’t say I disagree entirely with that.
But the owners & board can’t expect exceptional if they aren’t giving him the players to achieve that.
Personally I think a cup final & 7th would be an excellent first full season for Howe – if he can achieve a higher league position than that then more praise to him.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Eric, nope don’t watch them and sounds like I’m not missing much 😁.
This blog along with nufc.com remains my default go to for nufc and that’s down to the fab community here, despite me rarely agreeing with anyone 🤣🤣
Sharpy, guess we can agree to differ in our views . I do try to keep my views relative to the long term which may account for me being less critical about clubs approach this season than I could be
GoWest!Mag(Quote)
ffs
Spuds score
kimtoon(Quote)
Go West – my views are long term too. I said neither player has a future with Newcastle & I get the club taking the opportunity to move players off their books … but without them now there’s no depth to our squad for the remainder of this season – meaning when Wilson was out last week we had no plan B to Isak – meaning when Bruno is suspended & Willock injured & Joelinton walking a suspension tight rope – we are turning to Matt Ritchie.
I’ve no issue moving Shelvey & Wood on – but do it in the summer if we aren’t signing their replacements straight away.
Sharpy17(Quote)
Well that’s us out the top four now then 😔😡
Gilly Toon(Quote)
Ok, so I think Newcastle did replace both shelvey and wood. Not in a direct sense but with forward / midfield options that offer plan b and suit Howe’s approach. while they may have quantitatively reduced the squad it’s less clear in a qualitative sense
CMF ( one position )joelinton, guimaraes, longstaff, Gordon. I could add schar but that feels extreme. Would shelvey be in front of any of them ?? Longstaff possibly, but he’s looked fine except against the very top teams
AM (two positions) willock, joelinton, almiron, Gordon, Anderson, st maximan, murphy, longstaff. thinking of outside mf players in Howe’s system which of those is shelvey in front of ??
Forward (3 positions): isak, Wilson, st maximan, Gordon. Admittedly to get the best of those options may require a front 2 rather then 3 but does wood get in before that lot??
Lots of overlap I know but it’s a thought
Without popes and guimaraes’ errors neither of which the club can reasonably plan for and both of which are negated by the time Newcastle resume PL games then there’s no need to reach to the situation you describe.
So my thought is that current woes are more down to individual errors than lack of investment. Longer term is a risk thats worth taking given that’s where Newcastle are right now
GoWest!Mag(Quote)
Go West – lots of overlaps??? you’ve got the same player playing 3 different positions there 😂
As I said before, Shelvey wouldn’t get in ahead of those players – all being fit. But he’d be there so we didn’t have to turn to Ritchie as we did yesterday.
Of course the club can reasonably plan for those events – they HAVE to plan for such events. Whether it’s Pope and Bruno or Trippier and Wilson, whether it’s Isak or Willock
picking up an injury – who knows?!
But they really should prepare for such scenarios as best they can – and through January they haven’t imo.
It may well be down to individual errors – but those errors weren’t happening earlier in the season because Howe had the players to rest and rotate – a luxury he now doesn’t have due to a lack of numbers.
You say I’m being critical of the club, but in the same breath I’m saying I think we are having an outstanding season and anything above a 7th place finish would have been an outstanding season (not forgetting the cup final of course).
I’m saying I think it was a missed opportunity.
Sharpy17(Quote)
‘fraid I wasn’t sharpy I was suggesting some players can play in multiple roles to give Howe options on how he wants to set up
Anyhow, good debate thanks 👍👍and I’m done as I’ve talked here too much today
GoWest!Mag(Quote)
I know mate, sorry I was being facetious – I knew what you meant.
I think I knew I wasn’t changing your mind, and believe it or not I don’t think you’re wrong (depending on what the club are prioritising).
If we are wanting to be a consistent at the top of the PL the long term plan is ultimately the most important – BUT if it results in us falling away from the top 4 this season then it has to be unfair to say the season has been a failure imo.
Good chatting fella 👍🏻
Sharpy17(Quote)
At the start of the season I think I argued that we could achieve top 4, however, there were caveats. Certainly at that point I would have thought that achieving Europe was a must as the promises made to Bruno et al must have existed. So CL as the target, EL as the fall back acceptable result. A cup run would have been nice as well. No Europe, whilst it might be progress was not going to satisfy the ambitions of the club.
After 19 games, the halfway point, looking at the factors at play teams having to come to SJP, Liverpool and Chelsea underachieving then top four whilst originally a target was looking a distinct possibility. A run of 8 games after the restart duplicating our start to the season, has naturally lowered expectations. It is however, still in our own hands. Will we get top four? possibly. Is 5th or 6th a failure, of course not. slightly dissapointing from where we were. 7th and 8th would be disappointing, and certainly looking at the January window would be a valid critism of not pushing on.
PremAndUp(Quote)
Seems pundits and officials all creaming themselves over manure again. Absolutely clear red card for manure player not given. Not even a yellow. So corrupt it unbelievable! I feel now that we are fighting not just manure nest week, but officials and var too. FA will do everything they can to ensure we don’t win next week
Gilly Toon(Quote)
Gilly – talk about consistency, that challenge was every bit as bad as Bruno’s who got his yellow card overturned to a red – Man Utd didn’t even get a yellow & VAR didn’t deem it bad enough for the ref to go to the screen.
To be fair I don’t think there was any malice in either challenge but if one’s a red and the other isn’t even a booking then the games gone imo.
I think Howe is too nice to bring it up in the media as well – but he should be calling out these inconsistencies – VAR has done us plenty this season.
Sharpy17(Quote)
I didn’t see the game and a 40s twitter clip is hardly the best info to have.
Looking at var rules the one that could apply is game changing red card.
Not sure how the var kicks in tho as the ref (I think) didn’t stop the game.
You’d have to think the var official would at least take a precautionary 2nd look but maybe not. How many officials monitor the video in the var booth ??
Players chucking themselves around at the slightest touch doesn’t help in these cases not that I’m suggesting he did so in this case.
But we have seen var stop play well after incidents
I wonder if the reason guimaraes got red and the manu player didn’t was because the game was stopped at Southampton for a free kick
GoWest!Mag(Quote)
Go West – he did give a freekick for the Man Utd one mate, just didn’t book him.
Think the big difference was the Leicester players didn’t surround the ref the way the Saints players did – but it shouldn’t take that.

Is it harsh for me to say I think the club have made a mistake giving Almiron a new deal?! – and even more so when the deal is 3.5 yrs long.
He’s 29 now I don’t think he’s best years are ahead of him with respect.
He’s a hard working lad and gives his all for the shirt – nobody can deny that.
But – other than the first half of this season, his return really hasn’t been good – goals & assists I mean.
I’d be replacing him in the summer – but at 29 I’d be looking to cash in on the 1 good season he’s had for us rather than keep him til he’s 33.
Sharpy17(Quote)
That’s harsh Sharpy. Kid’s been really good this season and will only be 32 when deal’s up.

I tend to agree with SHARPY a lot of the time he runs about like a headless chicken, yes he’s scored some canny goal’s but not one assist that that I know of for a midfielder, let’s hope he gets the goal touch back we need it badly
Icedog(Quote)
Georgio – has he been good this season though? – he’s had an amazing run of form before the WC, but I’m not sure that form has continued since.
He’s a right winger with no right foot at all – he won’t cross the ball or shoot with it, meaning it slows our attack down every time.
Whether it’s 32 or 33, it’s hardly building for the future & I just don’t think his goals/assists ratio warrants him staying as a squad player.
It may be harsh, but if we want to get top 4 regularly, we aren’t doing it with players like Miggy imo.

On his performance over the last 12 18 months especially almiron merits a new contact as well as it offering some protection if Newcastle get an offer for him.
The key is the struture of it and if its based around him being a starter or squad player and it does seem a tad lengthy
To maintain his level of energy and press into his 30’s is asking a lot so id expect almiron to slide into a squad position over time.
In truth I’d be looking to do that now and I’m a bit surprised there isn’t more debate about him or st maximan. I would have willock starting if fit and hook almiron for st maximan .. oh and I’d have Gordon starting before all three of them

Go West – Miggy played 30 games last season and got 1 goal & 1 assist.
This season 10 goals & 1 assist. 10 goals is amazing – but to put some perspective on that – he’s got 19 goals in his Newcastle career.
When you add to that he’s only got 9 assists in his Newcastle career – it ain’t good reading.
It’s around this point that people start throwing in that he played under Rafa & Bruce during those times & Howes coaching him the right way – ok I’ll accept that 🤷🏼♂️.
But it doesn’t change the fact he’s 29 & the next 3 years won’t be his best.
The fact Howe is now getting the best out of him probably means his value has never been higher. Nows the time to cash in on him imo.
Might sound harsh but look at City. Raheem Sterling got so many more goals & assists but once he’d served his purpose, they cashed in 🤷🏼♂️.
