Newcastle eyeing bargain move for out of contract Spaniard – Report

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are set to battle Wolves, Leeds and Real Madrid for Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo; who looks set to leave on a free transfer this summer.

The 27-year-old has made 37 appearances for the Portuguese side so far this season, scoring five and setting up a further eight, and is being tracked by a number of European clubs.

With his contract set to expire in the summer, the full-back will be allowed to leave for free – creating what could be an ideal move for Newcastle based on ongoing FFP limitations.

This isn’t the only left-back we’ve been linked with in recent days, with Fulham’s Antonee Robinson an Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney mentioned as potential targets over the weekend.

Should we secure European football next season, that could play a big role in determining Grimaldo’s next club, but it would certainly be a challenge to battle Real Madrid should they make him a priority.

With bags of experience, a brilliant left foot and bags of quality, a cut-price move for the Spaniard could make sense, with this not the first time we’ve been credited with an interest in the former Barca talent.
